2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Mercedes-Benz dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Mercedes-Benz. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

Every second-generation CLA starts with a button, and the fob works from a pocket or bag anywhere in the cabin. Keyless-Go entry at the handles depends on packages. US versions include the CLA 250, the CLA 250 4MATIC, the AMG CLA 35 and the AMG CLA 45, and later cars gained mild-hybrid assist. The fob contains a mechanical emergency key for the driver's door, which matters if the fob battery or the car's 12-volt battery fails.

What's specific to the 2024 CLA

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA is the fifth of 6 model years in the CLA C118 (2nd generation) (2020–2025), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source.

At 2 years old, a 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.

Key options for the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA

  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Proximity keys bring a security trade-off worth understanding. Because the fob is always listening, thieves with relay equipment can stretch its signal from inside your house to the car in the driveway. Keeping the fob away from exterior walls, or in a signal-blocking pouch, closes that gap, and some fobs offer a sleep mode described in the owner's manual. If a smart key for your 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA is lost or stolen, programming a replacement is the moment to delete the missing fob from the car's memory. And be wary of used fobs from online sellers: a lot of them are locked to the vehicle they came from and can't be reprogrammed to yours.

How the Mercedes-Benz immobilizer works on the CLA

Mercedes-Benz calls its immobilizer the Drive Authorization System, and for key work it helps to sort the cars into three eras. The oldest models we cover, such as the 2000-2002 E-Class, the last W202 C-Class and the first CLK, use a key with remote buttons in its head and an HU64 two-track blade that turns a conventional ignition lock while the immobilizer checks electronics inside the key. The next era, known in the trade as FBS3 or DAS 3, came to the US on the S-Class and CL around 2000 and spread to nearly every model within a few years. Its key is a fob that plugs into an electronic ignition switch and identifies itself by infrared: chrome-bodied at first, then the familiar black fob with chrome sides. Keyless-Go let many of these cars open and start with the fob left in a pocket. Around 2014 and 2015, Mercedes began moving models to FBS4, and push-button start gradually became standard. FBS4 keys are produced by Mercedes-Benz for one VIN, which is why most newer cars mean a dealer order.

  • Gasoline CLA 250 and AMG CLA models were still sold for 2026 beside the new electric CLA, so a 2026 car may belong to either generation.
  • The CLA Shooting Brake wagon of this generation was never sold in the US.
  • A used fob from another CLA can't be recoded to yours.

Getting a 2024 CLA key from the dealer

CLA keys from 2020 on are made by Mercedes-Benz for the specific VIN and ordered through a dealer after ID and ownership checks, and they arrive ready to register. We don't program them from blanks. Where we help is the rest of the job: getting into the car without damage, checking whether a fob that seems dead just needs a battery, and pulling the emergency key so the car stays locked while the replacement is on its way.

Keys for 2020 and later CLAs are ordered by VIN from a Mercedes-Benz dealer; we help with lockouts and fob checks.

How we help when the key must come from Mercedes-Benz

With every key gone, the era matters again. On many FBS3 cars, we remove the electronic ignition switch, read it on the bench and calculate a new key from the car's own data, with no working key to copy. That takes longer than making a spare, and a few switches or control units won't cooperate, but it often saves a tow to the dealer. For FBS4 cars and for the oldest pre-FBS3 models, the dependable route is a key built by Mercedes-Benz for your VIN and ordered through a dealer after you show ID and proof of ownership. While that order is filled, we can open the car without damage so you can reach documents or belongings, and a dealer can block the lost keys so they no longer start the car.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Mercedes-Benz dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2024 CLA needs a dealer key

Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2024 CLA is one of them. Mercedes-Benz generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Mercedes-Benz models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.

What to bring to the dealer

Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.

While you wait for the new key

While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.

What affects the dealer's price for a CLA key

Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2024 CLA, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

CLA key battery

A fob battery rarely dies all at once. The warning signs build: you have to get closer to the car before the doors respond, the dash shows a key battery or key-not-detected message, or the push-button start only works with the fob held near the button. Inland heat speeds that decline, especially for fobs left in a hot cabin or on the dashboard. Keep a spare replacement at home in a cool drawer, sealed in its original package, and buy from a busy store where stock turns over quickly. A cell that sat on a shelf for years may arrive already partly spent.

Common Mercedes-Benz key problems

  • Mercedes keys are written to one car, so a secondhand fob bought online usually can't be programmed to yours. New keys made for your car, or keys ordered by VIN through a dealer, are the options that work.
  • Inland Empire summer heat shortens coin-cell life and is hard on fobs left on a sunny dashboard. If a Mercedes key starts responding only at close range, a new battery is the simplest first step.
  • A weak 12-volt battery can make a Mercedes act as if it has a key problem: the fob isn't recognized, the ignition won't turn, or the doors won't respond. Checking voltage first can save an unnecessary key order.
  • The black Mercedes fob with chrome sides takes a CR2025 coin cell, and a small lamp on the fob flashes when you press a button. If the lamp stays dark or the remote stops working, try a fresh cell before ordering a key.
  • The electronic steering lock is a known weak point on the W204 C-Class and the W212 and W207 E-Class. When it fails, the key goes in but won't turn and the dash stays dark, and a new key will not fix it.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
  • On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.
  • Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.

Proof of ownership

Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith make a key for a 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA?

New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Keys for 2020 and later CLAs are ordered by VIN from a Mercedes-Benz dealer; we help with lockouts and fob checks. The 2024 CLA uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.

Is the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA push-to-start?

Yes. The 2024 CLA uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.

How long does a dealer key for a 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLA take?

It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
