Rekeying Your House in Newport Beach: What a Full Rekey Covers
Short answer: A full house rekey should reach every exterior keyed lock: the front deadbolt and handleset, the garage-to-house door, the garage side door, back and side doors, keyed patio or French doors, security screen doors and gate padlocks. A casita or shed can join the house key or stay separate. In Newport Beach, we count them with you and quote the whole house first.

Not every door in a house has to share a key. If you rent out a casita or a room with its own entrance, keep a home office locked, or want the detached workshop on its own key, a house rekey is the moment to set that up. We can key the main house alike, give the casita its own key, and still cut you a key that opens your doors without opening a tenant's. Julian's Locksmith plans those zones with you in Newport Beach during the walk-through, before any cylinder comes apart.
What to know first in Newport Beach
During a house rekey, every door gets one of three decisions: rekey it, replace it, or key it separately. Rekeying is the default for sound hardware, because the lock already fits the door and costs nothing extra to keep. Replacement makes sense when a lock wobbles on the door, the finish has worn through, the key sticks even when it's cut fresh, a back door has no deadbolt at all, or a cheap builder knob guards a garage entry that deserves better. Separate keying fits a rented casita, a room with its own entrance, or a workshop with expensive tools. We'll make a recommendation for each opening and price them line by line, and you choose. A house in Newport Beach commonly ends up mostly rekeyed, with one or two locks replaced and keyed to match, and a deadbolt added somewhere it was missing. Nothing gets swapped without your approval and a price for that specific lock.
What we can do on-site
- Front entry deadbolt and handleset. Front doors get the most use, so their cylinders show the most wear. During a house rekey we pull the deadbolt and entry cylinders, re-pin them, clean out years of grit and check the latch alignment. If a decorative handleset has seen better days, we'll say so and price a matching replacement.
- Back, patio and French doors. Back doors usually have a knob and deadbolt like the front, and both get rekeyed. Sliding patio doors typically have a latch with no outside key; if yours has a keyed exterior cylinder, we'll check whether it can be re-pinned. French doors carry a handleset or deadbolt on the active door and flush bolts on the other.
- Casitas, ADUs and rented rooms. Accessory units change the key plan. If a tenant lives in a casita, its locks should be on a different key from the main house, and California landlords must provide working deadbolts on main entry doors of rental units. We rekey the casita separately and can cut the owner a key that opens both if appropriate.
- Keypads, smart locks and garage codes. A Kwikset Halo, Schlage Encode or Yale Assure with a key cylinder gets re-pinned like any deadbolt, and retrofit locks such as August or Level keep your existing deadbolt cylinder, which we rekey normally. The codes and app users are separate, and we'll help you clear them during the house rekey.
- Household key plan and spares. Keep the key plan simple: one main house key, a separate casita or workshop key if needed, and a written list of who holds each. We'll cut and test every key during the visit. Keys for children can go on distinctive rings, without address tags, so a lost one doesn't point back to the house.
Local factors in Newport Beach
Townhomes with their own street entrance count as houses for this purpose, but shared walls and common areas change the plan. Your front door, garage entry and any private patio gate are yours to rekey in Newport Beach. The building's shared entry, garage gate and mail room usually belong to the association. Check your CC&Rs before swapping exterior hardware, because some specify handleset styles. A rekey keeps the original hardware in place, which sidesteps most of those rules.
Larger houses have more keyed openings than owners remember: service doors, a wine room, the pool house, a guest suite, staff entrances and gated motor courts. A house rekey in Newport Beach here is partly a key-control project, with zones for family, staff and guests, and often a restricted keyway so copies can't be cut at a hardware store. Baldwin and Emtek handlesets need careful removal so custom finishes stay unmarked.
Behind a community gate, the house itself is still your responsibility. A house rekey in Newport Beach covers your front door, garage entry, side gate and patio doors, but not the guard gate, clubhouse or mailbox cluster, which the association controls. Check your rules before changing exterior hardware that shows from the street, since some associations specify handleset finishes. Gate remotes and visitor codes live outside the key system, so they need clearing separately through the association.
Situations this covers
- For example, an executor handling a late parent's house books a rekey before the cleanout crew starts. She brings ID and the court's letters showing her authority. Several relatives, a caregiver and a neighbor had keys over the years. We rekey every exterior lock, cut keys for the executor and the cleanout company, and note which doors share a key for the eventual buyer.
- Picture a house on a big lot with a detached garage, a workshop and a pump house, plus three padlocks on fence gates. The owner wants the house on one key and the outbuildings on another, so helpers can reach the tools without entering the home. We rekey the doors into two zones, replace two cheap padlocks with rekeyable ones, and key them to the outbuilding key.
- A typical find: during a house rekey, the back door turns out to have only a keyed knob, no deadbolt at all. The owner assumed it had both. We rekey the knob with the rest of the house and, with the owner's go-ahead, install a deadbolt keyed to match, set its strike into the framing with long screws, and test it with the door closed.
- Say a homeowner rents the casita behind the house to a long-term tenant. The main house needs rekeying because a former roommate kept a key, but the tenant's unit shouldn't change without notice. We rekey the main house doors and side gate to one key, leave the casita on its own key, and the owner schedules that unit separately with proper notice.
From your call to the finished job
- Walk your house before you call. Pull out every key you own and try each one in each lock during your walk. You'll learn which doors share a key already, which locks have no working key, and whether a mystery key opens something you forgot. Share that with us when you call (951) 903-3193.
- Gather proof the house is yours. We confirm you own the house or live there before any lock comes apart. Photo ID with the address works, or ID plus a deed, property tax bill, utility bill or closing papers. Renters need the owner's written consent; executors and trustees bring the court letters or trust paperwork.
- Walk-through and label every door. We look at each lock's brand, keyway and condition as we go. A Kwikset deadbolt next to a Schlage knob on the same door means a keyway decision. A stiff, sun-faded side door lock might need replacing. You see every recommendation on the spot, with a price, before tools come out.
- Settle the key plan. Decide which doors share a key. Most houses go on one key; some keep a casita, workshop or rented room on its own. If brands don't share a keyway, we'll suggest which cylinders to swap so the plan works. Then we agree on how many keys to cut for each zone.
- Rekey door by door and test. We work through the house in a logical order, usually front door, garage entry, back doors, then gates and outbuildings. Keys are cut to code on our machine and checked in every lock they should open. Anything unexpected, such as a seized cylinder, is explained and quoted before we continue.
- Close the routes keys don't cover. We finish with the paperwork and the keys: an invoice listing every lock rekeyed or replaced, our license number LCO7891, and a note of which doors share which key if you'd like one. Hand out the new keys yourself, and keep the list somewhere you'll find it later.
How we quote the job
- How many keyed openings the house has. The quote follows your count, cylinder by cylinder. If you'd like to stage the work, rekey the doors into living space first: front, garage entry and back. Outbuildings and gates can follow later, though doing everything in one visit avoids paying for a second trip.
- Hardware mix built up over the years. Matching brands keep a house rekey simple. Mixed brands add parts: a Schlage-keyway cylinder for the odd Kwikset lock, or a replacement knob for a discontinued Weslock set. We'll suggest the cheapest path to one key, usually the brand that already covers the most doors.
- Extras around the property. Gates and outbuildings vary widely. Some padlocks have removable cores that re-pin easily; some gate latches use standard cylinders; others are better swapped for a weather-resistant lock. We'll give you a line-by-line price for every extra, so the decision stays with you.
Every job gets a clear quote before any work starts. Call (951) 903-3193 with the details and we'll tell you what to expect for your situation in Newport Beach.
What not to do
- Putting the new spare key back under the same rock. If old keys were a concern, the hiding place was probably part of the problem. Give the spare to someone you trust, or use a keypad, rather than hiding a fresh key where everyone already knows to look.
- Replacing every lock in the house when the existing hardware is sound. New hardware costs considerably more than rekeying and doesn't keep out old keys any better. Save replacement for locks that are worn, damaged, missing a deadbolt or simply not the quality you want.
- Leaving the screen doors and gate padlocks on old keys because they're "just the outer layer." They still control access to the doors behind them and the backyard. If a former key holder can open the screen or the gate, the house rekey left a gap.
What to do before we arrive
- Leave address tags off key rings, especially kids' keys. A key with a tag or a school ID showing your street is a key that leads straight back to your house. Use a colored key cap or a distinctive ring so family members can tell the house key from the rest.
- Decide what to do with the casita or rented room before the visit. Keying it separately protects a tenant's privacy and your own; keying it to the house is simpler if family uses it. Making the call ahead of time keeps the walk-through short and the quote accurate.
- Think about sliders while you're focused on locks. A standard sliding door latch isn't keyed, so a house rekey won't touch it, but a secondary pin lock or a bar in the track adds real protection. It's an inexpensive fix to handle the same week as the rekey.
- Give the side gate a real lock plan. A padlock on the old key undermines the whole house rekey. Choose between a rekeyable padlock on the house key, a keyed gate latch, or a combination padlock for gardeners and pool service, and change that combination periodically.

Frequently asked questions
Can you rekey the side gate and pool gate?
Side gates with keyed latches or rekeyable padlocks can join your house key. A pool gate is more particular: it has to close and latch by itself, and we don't change that function. If the gate has a keyed latch we can re-pin, we will and then test the latch. If it's a cheap padlock on a hasp, we replace it with a rekeyable one. Either way, the gate must still close without help.
How can I tell the old keys really stopped working?
We test them in front of you. After each cylinder is re-pinned, we try the new key from inside and outside with the door closed, then try the old key so you can watch it fail to turn. Keep one old key for each door until the visit ends so the test is possible, then recycle them. Once they no longer work, the copies you've lost track of are dead too.
How long does a house rekey take?
Most single-family houses are finished in one visit, and the time follows the number of cylinders and their condition. Matching newer locks go fastest. Older hardware, mixed brands, a stuck cylinder or a lock with no working key slow things down, and we tell you when that happens. We re-pin one cylinder at a time so the house is never left with an open door, then walk it with you to test every key.
Does a house rekey cover the garage opener and keypad?
No. Rekeying changes keyed cylinders only. Your opener still answers every remote ever paired with it, and the outdoor keypad keeps its old code, until you reset them. On most openers, holding the Learn button on the motor unit until its light goes out erases the remotes, and then you re-pair the ones you're keeping. We walk you through that and the keypad code at the end of the visit.
When can you do my house rekey in Newport Beach?
We schedule Newport Beach house rekeys every day from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Weekends are included. Call (951) 903-3193 and we'll give you an honest arrival window based on our schedule and the drive. If you feel unsafe and we're closed, call 911 first; the rekey can follow on the next day we're open.
What does a house rekey include?
A house rekey re-pins every keyed cylinder on your home to a new key, so old keys stop working while the hardware stays on the doors. We count the front deadbolt and handleset, the garage entry and garage side doors, back and patio doors, security screens, gate padlocks and any outbuildings, then rekey the ones you choose. We quote by the cylinder count, cut the new keys, test every lock, and go over codes and remotes before we leave.
How far is Newport Beach from your base?
Newport Beach is about 63 miles from our San Bernardino base, roughly 70 minutes in light traffic. Arrival time depends on traffic and on the job the technician is finishing, so we give you an estimate on the phone before you commit.
