2022 Ford GT Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2022 Ford GT uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Ford dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2022 Ford GT, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Ford. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The second-generation GT starts with a button and uses a smart fob registered to the car's security system. Beyond that, the car is a special case. Production ran to roughly 1,350 cars, keys are not stocked like everyday Ford fobs, and Ford handled sales and service through approved dealers. We don't keep keys for this car, and we would point an owner toward the selling dealer for a new fob.
What's specific to the 2022 GT
2022 was the final model year of the GT Second generation. Late-run cars occasionally pick up running changes, so we check the VIN instead of assuming a 2022 Ford GT matches a 2017. A 2022 Ford GT is about 4 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Smart-key cars like the 2022 GT can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.
Key options for the 2022 Ford GT
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2022 Ford GT open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
How the Ford immobilizer works on the GT
Ford's immobilizer is PATS, the Passive Anti-Theft System, sold under the SecuriLock name. A transponder sealed in the key head, or built into the fob on push-button models, answers a coded challenge from a coil around the ignition or from antennas in the cabin, and the engine won't run until the powertrain computer accepts the answer. Across 2000-2026 the chip changed in clear steps. Pickups, big SUVs and the Crown Victoria used a fixed-code Texas 4C chip into the early 2000s, and the Excursion kept it through 2005. The first Escape and early Focus used a Texas 4D60. Between 2000 and 2004 most of the lineup moved to the encrypted Texas 4D63, with 80-bit versions becoming the norm around 2011, while most catalogs list the E-Series van with chip keys only from 2008. NXP Hitag Pro arrived with the 2013 Fusion, reached the F-150 for 2015 and now covers nearly the whole lineup. Remote-head keys appeared in the mid-2000s, Intelligent Access push-button fobs around 2010, and long-range 902 MHz fobs came with remote start. Recent models use 434 MHz fobs, and the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning added Phone As A Key.
- Ford planned about 1,350 GTs, so aftermarket fobs and programmer coverage are far thinner than for a mainstream Ford.
- We know of no aftermarket fob for this GT, so a replacement has to be a Ford part.
Getting a 2022 GT key from the dealer
Keys for this GT go through Ford. The fob is a smart key that must be registered to the car's security system, and the parts and service process for this low-volume car runs through dealers approved to handle it. What we can do locally is limited to lockout help and, if the emergency blade is available, cutting it to your lock. For a replacement fob, start with the dealer that sold or services the car.
Replacement fobs for this low-volume car come through Ford's approved GT dealers; we can help with lockouts and blade cutting only.
How we help when the key must come from Ford
When every key to a Ford is gone, older models are usually a single visit. We cut a working key from the factory key code or by decoding a door lock, then erase the missing keys from PATS and program new ones, so a lost key that turns up later won't start the vehicle. Ford's procedure expects at least two keys after an erase, so plan on two. Push-button Fords get new fobs plus freshly cut emergency blades through the same port. On push-button Fords from about 2015 on, an active alarm often means an emulator or bypass cable, and on many 2020-and-later models, including the current F-150, Super Duty, Bronco and Explorer, all-keys-lost can also call for an online security step or, on some builds, the dealer. We check your VIN against current tool coverage before quoting, and we ask for ID and proof of ownership first.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Ford dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2022 GT needs a dealer key
Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2022 GT is one of them. Ford generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Ford models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.
What to bring to the dealer
Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.
While you wait for the new key
Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.
What affects the dealer's price for a GT key
Expect the dealer's quote to include the key itself, a programming or setup charge, and sometimes a separate charge for cutting an emergency blade. If every key is lost, add the cost of getting the car to the dealership. Comparing two dealers is worth a phone call; programming charges vary more than the price of the key.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2022 GT, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
GT key battery
Most fobs for a 2022 Ford GT open along a small slot in the seam; a coin or a plastic pry tool works better than a screwdriver, which chews up the housing. If the fob hides a mechanical blade, slide it out first, since the case often opens from that gap. Note which side of the old cell faces up, swap in a fresh replacement, and press the halves together until they click all the way around. Handle the new battery by its edges, because skin oil on the faces can hurt contact. In most cases the fob keeps its programming through a battery change, so test lock, unlock and start, and you're done.
Common Ford key problems
- With only one programmed key, Ford's do-it-yourself spare routine is off the table because it needs two working keys. Adding a second key while the first still works is far simpler than an all-keys-lost visit later.
- Many Fords carry a SecuriCode keypad on the driver's door or pillar. The five-digit factory code is printed on a wallet card in the owner's packet, and if that card is lost, the code can usually be read with a scan tool.
- MyKey, which spread across the lineup from about 2010, lets an admin key limit top speed and audio volume on another key. A newly programmed key carries no restrictions until you set MyKey up again in the vehicle menu.
- A flashing theft light with a crank and no start, or an engine that fires and dies after a second, usually means PATS didn't read the key. A cracked head that lost its chip, or a hardware-store copy with no transponder, is the usual cause.
- Battery sizes changed over the years. Separate remotes, remote-head keys and flip keys mostly take a CR2032, while most Ford smart fobs from about 2017 on take a thicker CR2450. Inland Empire heat shortens either one, so read the old cell before buying.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
- On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.
- If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2022 Ford GT?
New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Replacement fobs for this low-volume car come through Ford's approved GT dealers; we can help with lockouts and blade cutting only. The 2022 GT uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.
Is the 2022 Ford GT push-to-start?
Yes. The 2022 GT uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.
How long does a dealer key for a 2022 Ford GT take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
