2019 Ford GT Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2019 Ford GT uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Ford dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2019 Ford GT, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Ford. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.
2019 GT key specs
| Generation | Second generation (2017-2022), 2017–2022 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Locksmith support | Dealer key required |
The second-generation GT starts with a button and uses a smart fob registered to the car's security system. Beyond that, the car is a special case. Production ran to roughly 1,350 cars, keys are not stocked like everyday Ford fobs, and Ford handled sales and service through approved dealers. We don't keep keys for this car, and we would point an owner toward the selling dealer for a new fob.
What's specific to the 2019 GT
The 2019 Ford GT is the third of 6 model years in the GT Second generation (2017–2022), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source.
A 2019 Ford GT is about 7 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Key options for the 2019 Ford GT
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Making a new smart key is mostly a programming job. The fob has to match the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip, and then the keyless system must be told to accept it, normally through the OBD-II port. Depending on the platform, that can mean entering a PIN, waiting through a timed security procedure, or on some newer vehicles, using manufacturer online access. When every key is lost, certain models need a module removed and read on the bench. For your Ford GT Second generation, we'll tell you which of those applies, and if a step is dealer-only, you'll hear it before we drive out. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob is cut by code during the same visit.
How the Ford immobilizer works on the GT
Ford's immobilizer is PATS, the Passive Anti-Theft System, sold under the SecuriLock name. A transponder sealed in the key head, or built into the fob on push-button models, answers a coded challenge from a coil around the ignition or from antennas in the cabin, and the engine won't run until the powertrain computer accepts the answer. Across 2000-2026 the chip changed in clear steps. Pickups, big SUVs and the Crown Victoria used a fixed-code Texas 4C chip into the early 2000s, and the Excursion kept it through 2005. The first Escape and early Focus used a Texas 4D60. Between 2000 and 2004 most of the lineup moved to the encrypted Texas 4D63, with 80-bit versions becoming the norm around 2011, while most catalogs list the E-Series van with chip keys only from 2008. NXP Hitag Pro arrived with the 2013 Fusion, reached the F-150 for 2015 and now covers nearly the whole lineup. Remote-head keys appeared in the mid-2000s, Intelligent Access push-button fobs around 2010, and long-range 902 MHz fobs came with remote start. Recent models use 434 MHz fobs, and the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning added Phone As A Key.
- Ford planned about 1,350 GTs, so aftermarket fobs and programmer coverage are far thinner than for a mainstream Ford.
- We know of no aftermarket fob for this GT, so a replacement has to be a Ford part.
Getting a 2019 GT key from the dealer
Keys for this GT go through Ford. The fob is a smart key that must be registered to the car's security system, and the parts and service process for this low-volume car runs through dealers approved to handle it. What we can do locally is limited to lockout help and, if the emergency blade is available, cutting it to your lock. For a replacement fob, start with the dealer that sold or services the car.
Replacement fobs for this low-volume car come through Ford's approved GT dealers; we can help with lockouts and blade cutting only.
How we help when the key must come from Ford
When every key to a Ford is gone, older models are usually a single visit. We cut a working key from the factory key code or by decoding a door lock, then erase the missing keys from PATS and program new ones, so a lost key that turns up later won't start the vehicle. Ford's procedure expects at least two keys after an erase, so plan on two. Push-button Fords get new fobs plus freshly cut emergency blades through the same port. On push-button Fords from about 2015 on, an active alarm often means an emulator or bypass cable, and on many 2020-and-later models, including the current F-150, Super Duty, Bronco and Explorer, all-keys-lost can also call for an online security step or, on some builds, the dealer. We check your VIN against current tool coverage before quoting, and we ask for ID and proof of ownership first.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Ford dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2019 GT needs a dealer key
On the 2019 GT, the immobilizer and the keyless system trust only keys that Ford's own system has authorized for that VIN. Programming happens through a secure online connection, and the key itself is usually ordered with the car's security data already written to it. Independent locksmith equipment is very capable on most vehicles, but on dealer-only generations like this one the honest answer is that the factory has to be involved. Being upfront about that saves you the cost of a wasted service call.
What to bring to the dealer
Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.
While you wait for the new key
Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.
What affects the dealer's price for a GT key
Expect the dealer's quote to include the key itself, a programming or setup charge, and sometimes a separate charge for cutting an emergency blade. If every key is lost, add the cost of getting the car to the dealership. Comparing two dealers is worth a phone call; programming charges vary more than the price of the key.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2019 GT, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
GT key battery
A fob battery rarely dies all at once. The warning signs build: you have to get closer to the car before the doors respond, the dash shows a key battery or key-not-detected message, or the push-button start only works with the fob held near the button. Inland heat speeds that decline, especially for fobs left in a hot cabin or on the dashboard. Keep a spare replacement at home in a cool drawer, sealed in its original package, and buy from a busy store where stock turns over quickly. A cell that sat on a shelf for years may arrive already partly spent.
Common Ford key problems
- Two chip keys hanging side by side, or a metal gadget pressed against the key head, can confuse PATS. Ford's manuals warn about this, and a truck that starts once the extra keys come off the ring has a healthy key.
- Battery sizes changed over the years. Separate remotes, remote-head keys and flip keys mostly take a CR2032, while most Ford smart fobs from about 2017 on take a thicker CR2450. Inland Empire heat shortens either one, so read the old cell before buying.
- With only one programmed key, Ford's do-it-yourself spare routine is off the table because it needs two working keys. Adding a second key while the first still works is far simpler than an all-keys-lost visit later.
- On high-mileage trucks and SUVs from the 2000s, a key that sticks or won't turn usually points to worn ignition wafers or a key copied from a copy. A key cut fresh to factory code often turns smoothly again, and badly worn cylinders can be rebuilt.
- Many Fords carry a SecuriCode keypad on the driver's door or pillar. The five-digit factory code is printed on a wallet card in the owner's packet, and if that card is lost, the code can usually be read with a scan tool.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
- On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.
- If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
Proof of ownership
Before we cut or program a key for any vehicle, we verify that you have the right to it. Please have two things ready: the current registration or the title, and a government-issued photo ID with a matching name. We also check that the VIN on those documents matches the VIN plate on the dashboard. If the registration is locked inside the car, that's fine; we open the vehicle first, check the paperwork in the glove box, and only then make the key. If something doesn't line up, we stop and sort it out before any key is made.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2019 Ford GT?
New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Replacement fobs for this low-volume car come through Ford's approved GT dealers; we can help with lockouts and blade cutting only. The 2019 GT uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.
Is the 2019 Ford GT push-to-start?
Yes. The 2019 GT uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.
How long does a dealer key for a 2019 Ford GT take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
