2024 Acura ZDX Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2024 Acura ZDX uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Acura dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2024 Acura ZDX, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Acura. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The electric ZDX was engineered with General Motors on GM's Ultium platform, and its smart key comes from GM's parts system rather than Honda's. The fob is a GM-designed five-button unit (parts catalogs list GM part number 85024681 and FCC ID YG0G21TB2) unrelated to any Honda-built Acura key, so a fob from an MDX or RDX will not work. Both the A-Spec and Type S use this key system, and a replacement has to be matched to your VIN and registered on GM's security platform.
What's specific to the 2024 ZDX
The 2024 model year was the only year of this ZDX generation (Second generation (electric)), so parts catalogs list its keys on their own; we match them by part number and FCC ID rather than by what earlier or later ZDXs used. It also marks a change from the previous generation: the 2013 ZDX used a smart proximity key with push-button start and a flip key, while the 2024 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. Keys from the older car will not work in this one.
At 2 years old, a 2024 Acura ZDX is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.
Key options for the 2024 Acura ZDX
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Making a new smart key is mostly a programming job. The fob has to match the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip, and then the keyless system must be told to accept it, normally through the OBD-II port. Depending on the platform, that can mean entering a PIN, waiting through a timed security procedure, or on some newer vehicles, using manufacturer online access. When every key is lost, certain models need a module removed and read on the bench. For your Acura ZDX Second generation (electric), we'll tell you which of those applies, and if a step is dealer-only, you'll hear it before we drive out. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob is cut by code during the same visit.
How the Acura immobilizer works on the ZDX
Acura fitted an immobilizer to essentially every car it sold here from 2000 on, and the type of chip tells you a lot about how a replacement key gets made. Through the early 2000s, the TL, CL, RL, MDX, RSX, NSX and 2000-2001 Integra used a Megamos 13 fixed-code transponder inside a conventional key, with keyless entry handled by a separate remote. The 2004 TL and TSX introduced Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) crypto chips, which later moved into flip keys on the MDX, RDX, TL and TSX. The 2005 RL brought Acura's Keyless Access smart key, and by the late 2010s nearly every Acura used push-button start with a Philips ID47 (Hitag 3) smart fob. The newest designs, such as the 2022-and-later MDX and RDX, the 2023 Integra and the ADX, use Honda's latest smart key generation, while the electric 2024 ZDX uses a GM-designed system. In every case the engine computer checks the chip before it lets the engine run, so a key that is only cut will turn the ignition without starting the car. A flashing key symbol on the dash usually means the car didn't recognize the chip.
- The second-generation ZDX was built by GM at Spring Hill, Tennessee, and only the 2024 model year was sold before production ended in 2025.
- Its key system is GM-designed, so Honda-based programming tools don't cover it.
Getting a 2024 ZDX key from the dealer
Keys for the 2024 ZDX are programmed on GM's vehicle security platform, which generally requires dealer equipment and an online connection to the manufacturer. Aftermarket tool support for this car is very limited. We can open a locked ZDX, help you gather the ownership documents the dealer will ask for, and coordinate the order through an Acura dealer.
New ZDX keys come through an Acura dealer; we can still help with lockouts and with coordinating the order.
How we help when the key must come from Acura
Losing every key to an Acura is usually fixable where the car sits, but the path depends on the year. For cars with Megamos 13 or ID46 chips, roughly 2000 to 2013 including the flip-key models, we cut a key to your locks by code or by decoding a lock, then program it to the immobilizer through the OBD-II port. Most push-button models from about 2009 to 2020 follow the same pattern with a new smart fob, though low-volume cars like the RL, RLX and first ZDX can take extra steps. The newest platforms, such as the 2022-and-later MDX and RDX, the current Integra, the ADX and the 2021-2025 TLX, depend on current tool coverage, while the hybrid NSX and electric ZDX are dealer jobs. Before anything is cut, we check your photo ID against the registration or title.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Acura dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2024 ZDX needs a dealer key
Why can't a mobile locksmith simply program a new key for a 2024 ZDX? Because the newest security architectures keep the secret part of the process at Acura. The car will only accept a key whose encrypted data was issued for its VIN, and that data comes from the manufacturer through the dealer's parts and service systems. Some owners are told otherwise online; we'd rather tell you plainly before anyone drives out.
What to bring to the dealer
Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.
While you wait for the new key
While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.
What affects the dealer's price for a ZDX key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2024 ZDX, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
ZDX key battery
Most fobs for a 2024 Acura ZDX open along a small slot in the seam; a coin or a plastic pry tool works better than a screwdriver, which chews up the housing. If the fob hides a mechanical blade, slide it out first, since the case often opens from that gap. Note which side of the old cell faces up, swap in a fresh replacement, and press the halves together until they click all the way around. Handle the new battery by its edges, because skin oil on the faces can hurt contact. In most cases the fob keeps its programming through a battery change, so test lock, unlock and start, and you're done.
Common Acura key problems
- Ordering the wrong fob online. Acura fobs that look identical can differ in frequency, transponder and memory position (Driver 1 or Driver 2). Match the FCC ID and part number on your current fob before buying, or let us source the part.
- Weak smart key batteries. Most Acura smart fobs from 2009 on take a CR2032 coin cell. With a dying battery, holding the fob against the ENGINE START/STOP button usually lets the car read its chip and start anyway.
- No-start after a key is dropped or run through the wash. A damaged chip can leave the key turning the ignition, or the fob locking doors, while the engine refuses to start. Testing the transponder tells us whether the key needs replacing.
- Worn edge-cut keys on early-2000s Acuras. Two decades of use rounds off the cuts and makes the ignition sticky or hard to turn. A key cut to the factory code usually works better than a copy of the worn original.
- Seized driver's door lock cylinders on smart key cars. The emergency blade almost never gets used, so the cylinder can corrode and refuse to turn the day the fob dies. Try your blade in the door lock every few months.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
- Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
- On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. New ZDX keys come through an Acura dealer; we can still help with lockouts and with coordinating the order. The 2024 ZDX uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.
Is the 2024 Acura ZDX push-to-start?
Yes. The 2024 ZDX uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.
How long does a dealer key for a 2024 Acura ZDX take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
