Acura ZDX Key Replacement
Short answer: Acura has used the ZDX name twice. The first ZDX, sold for the 2010 through 2013 model years, was a sloped-roof crossover with a V6 and SH-AWD, built in Ontario, Canada. The second was an electric crossover developed with General Motors on its Ultium platform, built at Spring Hill, Tennessee, and sold for the 2024 model year before production ended in 2025. The two share a name but nothing in their key systems. We make ZDX keys for model years 2010–2024 and tell you upfront when a specific year needs a dealer-supplied key. Call (951) 903-3193.

A 2024 Acura ZDX key is more than a piece of cut metal. Depending on the trim, it carries a transponder chip that talks to the immobilizer, a remote that operates the door locks, or a proximity fob that lets the engine start with a push of a button. Each piece has to be matched and programmed, not just copied. Julian's Locksmith handles that work on-site in Southern California and the surrounding parts of the Inland Empire: we identify the exact key by VIN and part number, cut the blade by code, and pair the electronics through the car's diagnostic port. Below, you'll find the key types used on the ZDX, what replacement involves, and what affects the cost.
ZDX keys by generation
| Generation | Second generation (electric), 2024–2024 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Locksmith support | Dealer key required |
The electric ZDX was engineered with General Motors on GM's Ultium platform, and its smart key comes from GM's parts system rather than Honda's. The fob is a GM-designed five-button unit (parts catalogs list GM part number 85024681 and FCC ID YG0G21TB2) unrelated to any Honda-built Acura key, so a fob from an MDX or RDX will not work. Both the A-Spec and Type S use this key system, and a replacement has to be matched to your VIN and registered on GM's security platform. Keys for the 2024 ZDX are programmed on GM's vehicle security platform, which generally requires dealer equipment and an online connection to the manufacturer. Aftermarket tool support for this car is very limited. We can open a locked ZDX, help you gather the ownership documents the dealer will ask for, and coordinate the order through an Acura dealer.
| Generation | First generation (YB1), 2010–2013 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Turn-key or push-button, depending on trim |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start); Flip (switchblade) key |
| Chip | Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) |
| Key battery | CR2032 (smart key), CR1616 (flip key) |
| Locksmith support | Spares; some cases need extra steps |
First-generation ZDX keys depend on equipment. Cars with Keyless Access and push-button start use a four-button smart key (lock, unlock, hatch and panic) carrying FCC ID M3N5WY8145, the same electronics family as the 2009-2014 TL smart key but with a hatch button and ZDX-specific part numbers, 72147-SZN-A71 and 72147-SZN-A81. Parts catalogs also list a four-button hatch flip key (FCC ID MLBHLIK-1T) for the ZDX, so check for an ENGINE START/STOP button before ordering. A mechanical blade inside the smart fob opens the driver's door if the battery dies. ZDX keys use a Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) transponder and are programmed through the OBD-II port with a key programmer, with the remote buttons set up in the same visit. Adding a key is the most common job. Because the ZDX sold in small numbers and came with two key styles, we confirm the key type and tool coverage against your VIN, and with all keys lost we check coverage for your year before quoting.
Acura key security
Acura fitted an immobilizer to essentially every car it sold here from 2000 on, and the type of chip tells you a lot about how a replacement key gets made. Through the early 2000s, the TL, CL, RL, MDX, RSX, NSX and 2000-2001 Integra used a Megamos 13 fixed-code transponder inside a conventional key, with keyless entry handled by a separate remote. The 2004 TL and TSX introduced Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) crypto chips, which later moved into flip keys on the MDX, RDX, TL and TSX. The 2005 RL brought Acura's Keyless Access smart key, and by the late 2010s nearly every Acura used push-button start with a Philips ID47 (Hitag 3) smart fob. The newest designs, such as the 2022-and-later MDX and RDX, the 2023 Integra and the ADX, use Honda's latest smart key generation, while the electric 2024 ZDX uses a GM-designed system. In every case the engine computer checks the chip before it lets the engine run, so a key that is only cut will turn the ignition without starting the car. A flashing key symbol on the dash usually means the car didn't recognize the chip.
Most Acura key programming happens through the OBD-II port under the dash with a professional key programmer. There's no owner-side procedure for the immobilizer chip, although the separate keyless entry remotes used from about 2000 to 2008 can usually be paired on board with Honda's timed ignition-and-lock-button routine. Flip keys and smart keys get their remote functions registered along with the chip. Two habits save trouble. First, bring every key you still use, because Honda's registration routine can drop keys that aren't present. Second, check the FCC ID and part number on your current fob, since Acura fobs run on several frequencies (308, 312, 314, 315 and 434 MHz) and many come in Driver 1 and Driver 2 versions tied to seat memory. Laser-cut blades are cut to code on a dedicated machine. We verify your ID and proof of ownership before any key is made.
All ZDX keys lost
Losing every key to an Acura is usually fixable where the car sits, but the path depends on the year. For cars with Megamos 13 or ID46 chips, roughly 2000 to 2013 including the flip-key models, we cut a key to your locks by code or by decoding a lock, then program it to the immobilizer through the OBD-II port. Most push-button models from about 2009 to 2020 follow the same pattern with a new smart fob, though low-volume cars like the RL, RLX and first ZDX can take extra steps. The newest platforms, such as the 2022-and-later MDX and RDX, the current Integra, the ADX and the 2021-2025 TLX, depend on current tool coverage, while the hybrid NSX and electric ZDX are dealer jobs. Before anything is cut, we check your photo ID against the registration or title.
- Gather your documents and the VIN. Call with the year, make, model and VIN if you can read it through the windshield, plus where the car is parked. Those details let us confirm whether your Acura ZDX can be done on-site and bring the right key, so the first trip is the only trip.
- Get into the vehicle without damage. If the car is locked, we open it with non-destructive tools such as an inflatable wedge and a long-reach rod, or by picking the door lock. Some vehicles need a careful approach to avoid triggering the alarm, which can interfere with programming later.
- Originate a new key from the car. Originating a key means building it without a sample. The door lock usually reveals most of the cuts; any it doesn't are worked out by test-cutting and trying the ignition or a second lock. The finished blade should feel like a factory key, not a forced fit.
- Program the key to the immobilizer. All-keys-lost programming often takes longer than adding a key, because the car has no trusted key to authorize the change. We follow the procedure your Acura ZDX requires, then confirm the engine starts and keeps running and the remote or keyless functions respond.
- Erase missing keys and add a spare. A lost key's metal blade can still open your doors even after its chip is erased. If the keys disappeared along with something showing where you live or park, consider rekeying the car's door lock cylinders too. We'll also recommend leaving with two working keys, not one.
Dealer or mobile locksmith?
The biggest difference between a dealership and a mobile locksmith is where the work happens. A dealer programs keys in its service bay, so if every key is lost, the car usually has to be towed there, and you work around the service department's schedule and the time it takes to order a key by VIN. Julian's Locksmith brings the cutting machine, key blanks and programming equipment to the car, whether it sits in your driveway, a workplace lot or a parking structure. For a 2024 Acura ZDX we can program on-site, that means no tow and no shuttle rides back and forth. The trade-off is real, though: on vehicles where only the dealer can program keys, a tow or appointment may still be necessary, and we'll say so before you spend anything on our visit.
How the job works
- Identify the exact key your ZDX uses. Every job starts with the VIN, the trim and a look at any key you still have. From those we confirm the keyway, the transponder or smart-key chip, the remote frequency, the FCC ID and the button layout. Two Acura ZDX keys that look identical can carry different electronics, so this step keeps the wrong part from ever reaching the car.
- Verify ownership before any work. California holds licensed locksmiths responsible for knowing whose car they're making keys for. We record your name, the VIN and the plate on a work order. If you aren't the registered owner, you'll need the owner's written authorization along with your own photo ID before we begin.
- Get the key code or decode the lock. A key is cut from a code, not a guess. When the factory code can be retrieved through manufacturer channels after ownership is verified, we use it. When it can't, we decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool that reads the wafer positions without damaging anything, then work out any missing cuts.
- Cut the blade on-site. Our van carries a code-cutting machine that handles both traditional edge-cut blades and the laser-cut, side-milled profiles common on newer keys. The blade is cut to the code, then test-fitted in a door lock and the ignition or emergency keyhole to confirm smooth operation before any programming begins.
- Program the chip, remote or smart key. Programming tells the car's computers that the new key belongs to the vehicle. Transponder chips are added to the immobilizer, remote buttons to the body control module, and proximity fobs to the keyless system. If a step requires dealer-only access on your ZDX, you'll have heard that before we arrived, not halfway through the job.
- Test everything and clear out old keys. Before we leave, every function gets checked: doors, trunk or liftgate, panic button, remote range, engine start, and the emergency blade in the driver's door. If keys are missing, we delete them from the car's memory where the system allows, so a lost key can no longer start the engine.
What affects the price of a ZDX key
- Factory or aftermarket parts. Some owners want an exact factory match; others just want a dependable key that starts the car. Both are reasonable choices. The part you pick changes the quote, so we lay out the options side by side, with the trade-offs in fit, button feel and long-term durability, before you decide.
- All keys lost or adding a key. On some vehicles, losing the last key changes the programming entirely, from a quick add-key procedure to a full immobilizer reset or a module read on the bench. That extra labor shows up in the price, and it's the strongest argument for keeping a spare in the house.
- Programming complexity and security access. Some immobilizers accept a new key with a few on-board steps. Others need a PIN code, a timed security wait, manufacturer online access, or removing a module to read its data. Every extra layer of security on the Acura system adds equipment time and labor to the job.
- Travel, timing and extra repairs. Sometimes a key problem is really a lock problem: an ignition that won't turn even with the right key, or a door cylinder that has been jammed for years. Fixing those is separate work. We point them out, explain the options, and quote the whole job up front so the bill holds no surprises.
ZDX key types explained
- Flip (switchblade) key. The hinge is the weak point on most flip keys. The pivot pin loosens, the spring loses tension, the release button sticks, and eventually the blade either won't lock open or flops out on its own. Carrying the key half-open in a pocket speeds that wear along. If the electronics are healthy, a replacement shell with a new hinge and pin often brings a 2024 Acura ZDX flip key back to crisp action: we transfer the board and chip, move or recut the blade, and test every function. If the board has broken solder joints or water corrosion, we'll show you the damage and quote a new key instead.
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2024 Acura ZDX open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
Why a spare key pays for itself
- Electronics fail without warning. A fob dropped on concrete, run through the washing machine or soaked at the pool can quit for good. With a second programmed key, that's an annoyance you fix on your own schedule, not a stranded car that needs attention today.
- When you sell or trade in the vehicle, buyers and dealers expect two keys. A missing key can come up during an appraisal or a private-sale negotiation, so having both on hand keeps the conversation about the car, not about what it will cost the next owner to replace one.
- A spare turns a future all-keys-lost emergency into a simple add-a-key job. With one working key in hand, programming is quicker, and the chip or fob can often be paired without decoding locks or reading modules, which keeps the cost of a lost key far lower.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
- If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
- Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
- Be careful with discount fobs from online marketplaces. A listing may match your remote's shape while using a different frequency, chip or FCC ID, and many used smart keys are locked to their original vehicle. If you already bought one, send us the listing or a photo before the visit so nobody pays for a programming attempt that can't work.
Common Acura key problems
- Broken flip-key hinges on 2007-2013 MDX and RDX keys and 2009-2014 TL and TSX keys. The blade stops locking open or flops loose. A new shell can often reuse the original board and chip, but a cracked board means a new programmed key.
- Lost remotes on models with separate fobs. On the early TL, CL, RL, MDX, RSX and first-generation TSX, the chip lives in the key, so a missing remote only affects keyless entry and can be replaced on its own.
- Worn edge-cut keys on early-2000s Acuras. Two decades of use rounds off the cuts and makes the ignition sticky or hard to turn. A key cut to the factory code usually works better than a copy of the worn original.
- Weak smart key batteries. Most Acura smart fobs from 2009 on take a CR2032 coin cell. With a dying battery, holding the fob against the ENGINE START/STOP button usually lets the car read its chip and start anyway.
- Seized driver's door lock cylinders on smart key cars. The emergency blade almost never gets used, so the cylinder can corrode and refuse to turn the day the fob dies. Try your blade in the door lock every few months.
- Ordering the wrong fob online. Acura fobs that look identical can differ in frequency, transponder and memory position (Driver 1 or Driver 2). Match the FCC ID and part number on your current fob before buying, or let us source the part.
- Four-button spares on remote-start cars. Some 2014 and later Acuras shipped with a five-button fob that includes remote engine start. A four-button replacement will drive the car but won't start it remotely, so count your buttons before ordering.
- No-start after a key is dropped or run through the wash. A damaged chip can leave the key turning the ignition, or the fob locking doors, while the engine refuses to start. Testing the transponder tells us whether the key needs replacing.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a key for my ZDX if I've lost every key?
In most cases, yes. We verify ownership, open the car without damage if needed, originate a key from the key code or by decoding a door lock, and program it to the immobilizer on-site. A few platforms restrict all-keys-lost programming to the dealer, and some need a module read on the bench before a new key is accepted. We'll tell you which applies to your 2024 Acura ZDX when you call.
When can you come out to Southern California for a car key?
We work every day from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., weekends included. Weekends are included. Call (951) 903-3193 and we'll give you an honest ETA to Southern California based on where we are at the time. If you're stuck outside our hours, it's usually smarter to leave the car parked and locked, get home safely, and call when we open than to pay for an overnight tow.
Why does my ZDX crank but not start with a newly cut key?
That pattern points to the immobilizer, not the engine. The blade is cut correctly, so the ignition turns, but the car doesn't recognize the chip and blocks fuel or spark. A flashing security light usually confirms it. The key either wasn't programmed, carries the wrong chip type, or is an unprogrammed copy from a hardware store. Programming a correct key to your 2024 Acura ZDX resolves it.
Do you come to Southern California to make car keys, or do I bring the car to you?
We come to you. Julian's Locksmith is a mobile-only service, so the van drives to wherever the car is parked in Southern California: your driveway, an apartment lot, a workplace or a shopping center. That matters most when every key is lost, because it saves you a tow. Just make sure we'll have room to work beside the driver's door and that the vehicle is accessible when we arrive.
What happens to the key I lost? Can it still start my Acura?
When we program new keys, we can usually erase lost keys from the immobilizer, which stops them from starting the engine. On some systems the car only remembers the keys present during programming, so the lost one drops off automatically. Keep in mind that a lost key's metal blade can still open the doors, so if it went missing with something that shows your address, ask about rekeying the door locks.
