Jaguar Key Replacement in Cerritos, CA: replacement car keys and smart fobs

How Jaguar keys and immobilizers work

Jaguar keys from 2000 on fall into four families, and knowing which one your car uses explains most of what a key job involves. The XJ8 (through 2003) and XK8 (through 2006) carried over from the late 1990s and use an 8-cut Tibbe key plus a separate four-button remote; on 2000-2003 cars the transponder is a Megamos crypto (ID48) chip. The S-Type, X-Type and 2004-2009 XJ share a Ford-era immobilizer and a 6-cut Tibbe key carrying a Texas Instruments 4D60 chip, usually built into a flip remote. Jaguar's Smart Key arrived with the 2007 XK and 2009 XF, a proximity fob with a Hitag2 (ID46) transponder and push-button start. From the 2011 XJ, and then the XF, F-Type, XE and F-Pace, Jaguar moved to the KOBJTF10A fob it shares with Land Rover, which uses a Hitag Pro (ID49) transponder and an HU101 emergency blade. On smart-key cars the key data lives in a keyless vehicle module (KVM), called the remote function actuator (RFA) on later models, and its software version decides how a key can be added. The E-Pace, I-Pace and the facelifted cars from about 2020 use newer fob families, where aftermarket coverage is thinner.

Jaguar key programming

Every Jaguar key job starts with ownership verification (photo ID plus registration or title) and a VIN check, because several Jaguar fobs look alike but are not interchangeable. S-Type, X-Type and 2004-2009 XJ keys are normally programmed with a scan tool through the OBD-II port, and the security procedure can include a timed wait before the car accepts new keys. The older XJ8 and XK8 crypto keys need a programmer with early-Jaguar coverage. Smart-key Jaguars are written to the KVM or RFA, and the method depends on that module's software: some versions accept a new key over OBD-II with JLR-specific software, others need the module read on the bench or a direct connection to the internal CAN network, and the newest cars may need a working key with the alarm disarmed. A battery maintainer stays connected throughout, since a voltage dip mid-procedure can fail the job. The emergency blade is cut to match your door lock so the backup key works too.

All Jaguar keys lost

Losing every key to a Jaguar can be recoverable, but the route depends on the year. For the Ford-era S-Type and X-Type we cut a Tibbe key to the lock and program it through OBD-II, usually the simplest case, though the result still depends on the car's module and our tool coverage. The 2000-2006 XJ8 and XK8 and the 2004-2009 XJ can be done with the right early-Jaguar coverage, though an aging security module sometimes has to come out for a bench read. Smart-key cars from 2007 through about 2020 vary by module version; some years are covered over OBD-II and others need the module removed, which takes longer than adding a spare. For the E-Pace, the I-Pace and the facelifted cars from about 2020 on, the dealer is often the realistic answer, and we say so up front. We verify your ID and proof of ownership before making any key.

Jaguar models we cover

  • E-Pace (2018–2024). The E-Pace was Jaguar's compact crossover, sold new in the US for the 2018 through 2024 model years and built in Austria by Magna Steyr. It shares much of its engineering with Land Rover's smaller models, including the key system, so its smart key and programming follow JLR's 2018-and-later approach. US versions used turbocharged four-cylinder engines with all-wheel drive. A 2021 refresh added Pivi Pro infotainment and updated electronics, which is why we treat the early and refreshed E-Pace as separate cases when quoting a key.
  • F-Pace (2017–2026). The F-Pace was Jaguar's first SUV, arriving in the US for the 2017 model year, and it is the only Jaguar sold new in the US for 2025 and 2026. Built at Solihull, it has used four-cylinder, six-cylinder and supercharged V8 power, the last in the SVR. Every F-Pace uses a proximity smart key with push-button start. The 2021 refresh brought a new interior with Pivi Pro infotainment and newer electronics, so key work on early and refreshed F-Paces is handled differently.
  • F-Type (2014–2024). The F-Type was Jaguar's two-seat sports car, sold in the US from the 2014 model year (convertible first, coupe for 2015) through 2024. Engines ranged from a turbocharged four-cylinder to supercharged V6 and V8 versions, and later cars offered all-wheel drive. Every F-Type uses a proximity smart key and push-button start, with flush door handles that deploy when the car is unlocked. A 2021 facelift brought slimmer headlights and revised trims, and the 2024 model year closed out production.
  • I-Pace (2019–2024). The I-Pace was Jaguar's battery-electric crossover, built in Austria by Magna Steyr and sold in the US for the 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024 model years; the US lineup had no 2021 model year. Twin motors give every I-Pace all-wheel drive. The 2022 update added Pivi Pro infotainment and faster onboard AC charging. All versions use a proximity smart key with a start button, and key programming is tied closely to Jaguar's dealer systems, which shapes what a locksmith can and cannot do for you.
  • S-Type (2000–2008). The S-Type was Jaguar's retro-styled mid-size sedan, sold in the US for the 2000 through 2008 model years and built at Castle Bromwich. It shared its DEW98 platform with the Lincoln LS and Ford Thunderbird, along with a Ford-derived immobilizer. V6 and V8 engines were offered, a supercharged S-Type R joined the range in the early 2000s, and a 2003 update brought a flip-open ignition key, a revised interior and a six-speed automatic. Because it uses PATS with a Tibbe key, the S-Type is one of the more approachable Jaguars for key work.
  • X-Type (2002–2008). The X-Type was Jaguar's compact sedan, sold in the US for the 2002 through 2008 model years and built at Halewood, England. It drew on the Ford Mondeo platform, and every US car had all-wheel drive. A 2.5-liter and a 3.0-liter V6 were offered at first, with only the 3.0 left by 2008, and a wagon joined the US lineup for 2005. Its Ford-derived PATS immobilizer and Tibbe flip key make it one of the more straightforward Jaguars for a locksmith to cut and program, and parts for the key remain easy to source.
  • XE (2017–2020). The XE was Jaguar's compact sport sedan, sold in the US for the 2017 through 2020 model years before Jaguar pulled it from the American market. Built at Solihull on an aluminum-intensive structure, it offered four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines and, early on, a supercharged V6, with rear- or all-wheel drive. Every XE uses a proximity smart key and push-button start. A 2020 refresh updated the styling and cabin, and supplier fitment for the fob becomes less consistent around the same time.
  • XF (2009–2024). The XF replaced the S-Type as Jaguar's mid-size sedan and ran in the US from the 2009 through 2024 model years across two generations, built at Castle Bromwich. The first car was known for its pulsing start button and the rotary gear selector that rises from the console. The second generation, from 2016, moved to an aluminum-intensive body and added a Sportbrake wagon from 2018. Every US XF uses a smart key with push-button start, but the fob and programming method changed several times along the way.
  • XJ (2000–2019). The XJ was Jaguar's flagship sedan, and three generations were sold new in the US between 2000 and 2019. The X308 (through 2003) wore XJ8, XJR and Vanden Plas badges. The aluminum-bodied X350 and its X358 update (2004-2009) added the Super V8. The redesigned X351 arrived for the 2010 model year with a start button and long-wheelbase XJL versions, running through 2019. Each generation uses a different key system, so the model year matters more than the badge when you need a key.
  • XK (2000–2015). The XK was Jaguar's grand touring coupe and convertible. The X100 generation, badged XK8 and supercharged XKR, was sold through the 2006 model year, gaining a 4.2-liter V8 for 2003. The aluminum-bodied X150 replaced it for 2007 and ran through 2015, adding the XKR-S. The two generations could hardly differ more in key technology: the X100 uses a Tibbe transponder key with a separate remote, while the X150 brought Jaguar's Smart Key and push-button start.

Common Jaguar key problems

  • Flip-key hinges on the S-Type, X-Type and 2004-2009 XJ wear out, leaving a blade that flops or won't lock open. The 4D60 chip and circuit board usually survive, so a new shell and blade can save the original remote.
  • A weak CR2032 in a Jaguar smart key causes intermittent no-start or key-not-detected warnings before the fob dies completely. Most smart-key models have a backup procedure, described in the owner's manual, that lets the car read a fob with a low battery.
  • Low 12-volt battery voltage produces odd immobilizer and keyless-entry faults and can abort key programming partway through. Several Jaguars mount the battery in the trunk, which makes a dead battery and a locked car a trickier combination.
  • Tibbe keys on 2000s Jaguars wear along with the ignition and door locks. A key cut to factory code, rather than copied from a worn original, usually works far better in a tired ignition cylinder.
  • Used or online-bought Jaguar smart keys are usually locked to the car they came from, and some can be reused only after an unlock or re-flash service. Check with us before buying a secondhand fob that only looks right.
  • Owners often forget the mechanical emergency blade hidden inside the smart key. If the fob or car battery dies, that blade fits a driver's door cylinder that on many models sits under a small cap on the handle.
  • Proximity-key Jaguars, like other keyless cars, are exposed to relay attacks that stretch the fob's signal from inside your house to the car. A signal-blocking pouch and an OBD-II port lock are sensible, inexpensive precautions.
  • Bargain aftermarket smart keys sometimes pair for lock and unlock yet fail the start or proximity functions. Matching the original part number and testing every function after programming avoids a second trip.

Dealer or mobile locksmith?

The biggest difference between a dealership and a mobile locksmith is where the work happens. A dealer programs keys in its service bay, so if every key is lost, the car usually has to be towed there, and you work around the service department's schedule and the time it takes to order a key by VIN. Julian's Locksmith brings the cutting machine, key blanks and programming equipment to the car, whether it sits in your driveway, a workplace lot or a parking structure. For a Jaguar car we can program on-site, that means no tow and no shuttle rides back and forth. The trade-off is real, though: on vehicles where only the dealer can program keys, a tow or appointment may still be necessary, and we'll say so before you spend anything on our visit.

How the job works

  1. Identify the exact key your car uses. Every job starts with the VIN, the trim and a look at any key you still have. From those we confirm the keyway, the transponder or smart-key chip, the remote frequency, the FCC ID and the button layout. Two Jaguar car keys that look identical can carry different electronics, so this step keeps the wrong part from ever reaching the car.
  2. Verify ownership before any work. Before cutting or programming, we compare your government photo ID with the vehicle registration or title and check that the VIN on the paperwork matches the VIN on the dash. If the registration is locked inside, we open the car first, confirm the documents, and only then make the key.
  3. Get the key code or decode the lock. If you still have a working key, we can read its cuts directly and check them against the factory depths for the Jaguar keyway. A worn key gets corrected back to spec during this step, so the new key turns crisply instead of reproducing years of wear in a fresh piece of metal.
  4. Cut the blade on-site. Our van carries a code-cutting machine that handles both traditional edge-cut blades and the laser-cut, side-milled profiles common on newer keys. The blade is cut to the code, then test-fitted in a door lock and the ignition or emergency keyhole to confirm smooth operation before any programming begins.
  5. Program the chip, remote or smart key. Programming tells the car's computers that the new key belongs to the vehicle. Transponder chips are added to the immobilizer, remote buttons to the body control module, and proximity fobs to the keyless system. If a step requires dealer-only access on your car, you'll have heard that before we arrived, not halfway through the job.
  6. Test everything and clear out old keys. Before we leave, every function gets checked: doors, trunk or liftgate, panic button, remote range, engine start, and the emergency blade in the driver's door. If keys are missing, we delete them from the car's memory where the system allows, so a lost key can no longer start the engine.

Proof of ownership

Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions

Do you come to Cerritos to make car keys, or do I bring the car to you?

We come to you. Julian's Locksmith is a mobile-only service, so the van drives to wherever the car is parked in Cerritos: your driveway, an apartment lot, a workplace or a shopping center. That matters most when every key is lost, because it saves you a tow. Just make sure we'll have room to work beside the driver's door and that the vehicle is accessible when we arrive.

What happens to the key I lost? Can it still start my Jaguar?

When we program new keys, we can usually erase lost keys from the immobilizer, which stops them from starting the engine. On some systems the car only remembers the keys present during programming, so the lost one drops off automatically. Keep in mind that a lost key's metal blade can still open the doors, so if it went missing with something that shows your address, ask about rekeying the door locks.

Can you fix a broken Jaguar key instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If the shell is cracked, the buttons are worn or the blade snapped, but the circuit board and chip are healthy, we can transfer the electronics into a new housing and cut a fresh blade to your key code. Your existing programming stays intact. If the board has been damaged by water or impact, a repair won't last, and we'll recommend a new programmed key instead.

When can you come out to Cerritos for a car key?

We work every day from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., weekends included. Weekends are included. Call (951) 903-3193 and we'll give you an honest ETA to Cerritos based on where we are at the time. If you're stuck outside our hours, it's usually smarter to leave the car parked and locked, get home safely, and call when we open than to pay for an overnight tow.
