Jaguar XF Key Replacement
Short answer: The XF replaced the S-Type as Jaguar's mid-size sedan and ran in the US from the 2009 through 2024 model years across two generations, built at Castle Bromwich. The first car was known for its pulsing start button and the rotary gear selector that rises from the console. The second generation, from 2016, moved to an aluminum-intensive body and added a Sportbrake wagon from 2018. Every US XF uses a smart key with push-button start, but the fob and programming method changed several times along the way. We make XF keys for model years 2009–2024. Call (951) 903-3193.

Losing the only key to a 2024 Jaguar XF usually happens at the worst moment: a parking lot after work, a trailhead, a driveway with the kids already buckled in. You don't need a tow truck or a dealership appointment to fix it. Julian's Locksmith drives a fully equipped service van to you in Southern California, confirms you own the vehicle, then cuts a new blade and programs the chip or fob right where the car is parked. Before we roll, we'll tell you over the phone what your XF needs, whether that's a simple transponder key or a proximity fob, and what the job will involve. You get a quote before any cutting starts, and the decision stays yours.
Jaguar XF keys by year
XF keys by generation
| Generation | X260 (2019 and later), 2019–2024 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Locksmith support | Spares; some cases need extra steps |
Later XFs keep a five-button proximity smart key with a hidden emergency blade and push-button start, but the fob family changes. Supplier listings show KOBJTF10A on some 2019 cars, the newer KOBJXF18A on 2020-2022 cars, and a further revised fob, KOBJXF23A, in at least one listing for 2024. The 2021 update also brought Pivi Pro infotainment and newer modules. Because the fobs cannot be swapped, we identify yours by the number on the fob and by VIN rather than by appearance. Add-key work on 2019 and later XFs generally needs a working key, a disarmed alarm and current JLR-capable software, sometimes with a direct connection to the internal CAN network. Coverage depends on the module and on model year, and it narrows on the newest cars. All-keys-lost on these XFs often goes to a Jaguar dealer, and we will tell you that before any work begins.
| Generation | X260 (second generation), 2016–2018 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Chip | NXP Hitag Pro (ID49) |
| Key battery | CR2032 |
| Locksmith support | Spares; some cases need extra steps |
The second-generation XF launched with the five-button KOBJTF10A smart key (lock, unlock, trunk or tailgate, lights and panic) and an HU101 emergency blade. Sedans and the Sportbrake wagon use the same style of fob, with the trunk button opening the Sportbrake's power tailgate. Major supplier tables list this fob for XFs through 2018, so we confirm the part number on your fob or decode it from the VIN before ordering a replacement. Most 2016-2018 XFs can have keys added with JLR-specific software, usually through OBD-II. The keyless module's software version determines the exact procedure, and a few modules need a bench read. All-keys-lost depends on that version and on current tool coverage. We verify ownership, confirm the module from your VIN, keep a battery maintainer connected and test entry, start and remote functions before we finish.
| Generation | X250 (2013-2015), 2013–2015 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Chip | NXP Hitag Pro (ID49) |
| Key battery | CR2032 |
| Locksmith support | Spares; some cases need extra steps |
From about the 2013 model year the XF moved to the KOBJTF10A smart key shared with the XJ and many Land Rover models, with five buttons and a hidden HU101 emergency blade. Supplier tables list the older KR55WK49244 fob through 2013 and KOBJTF10A from 2013, so on a 2013 the part number decides which fob you need. This period also brought the turbocharged 2.0-liter four to US XF buyers, but the key is the same across engines. The KOBJTF10A fob carries a Hitag Pro (ID49) transponder and is written into the keyless vehicle module with JLR-specific software. Adding a spare with a working key is the faster, simpler job on every year. With no working key, the module may need to come out for a bench read, and some cases go to the dealer. We check your VIN and module version before quoting.
| Generation | X250 (first generation), 2009–2012 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Chip | Philips Hitag2 (ID46) |
| Key battery | CR2032 |
| Locksmith support | Spares; some cases need extra steps |
Early XFs use Jaguar's first-generation Smart Key, FCC ID KR55WK49244, the same fob as the 2007-2015 XK. It has five buttons (lock, unlock, trunk, panic and lights) and a hidden HU101 emergency blade. These cars start with a push button: with the fob inside, pressing it wakes the car and raises the rotary gear selector. The fob takes a CR2032 battery, and a weak one is a common reason for an intermittent no-start. These cars use a Hitag2 (ID46) smart key. Adding a fob is done over OBD-II with a programmer that has early Jaguar smart-key coverage. With no working key, the security data may have to be read from the keyless module, which turns a routine spare into a longer job and on some cars sends it to the dealer. We confirm coverage for your VIN before quoting and test proximity entry, start and the remote buttons before finishing.
Jaguar key security
Jaguar keys from 2000 on fall into four families, and knowing which one your car uses explains most of what a key job involves. The XJ8 (through 2003) and XK8 (through 2006) carried over from the late 1990s and use an 8-cut Tibbe key plus a separate four-button remote; on 2000-2003 cars the transponder is a Megamos crypto (ID48) chip. The S-Type, X-Type and 2004-2009 XJ share a Ford-era immobilizer and a 6-cut Tibbe key carrying a Texas Instruments 4D60 chip, usually built into a flip remote. Jaguar's Smart Key arrived with the 2007 XK and 2009 XF, a proximity fob with a Hitag2 (ID46) transponder and push-button start. From the 2011 XJ, and then the XF, F-Type, XE and F-Pace, Jaguar moved to the KOBJTF10A fob it shares with Land Rover, which uses a Hitag Pro (ID49) transponder and an HU101 emergency blade. On smart-key cars the key data lives in a keyless vehicle module (KVM), called the remote function actuator (RFA) on later models, and its software version decides how a key can be added. The E-Pace, I-Pace and the facelifted cars from about 2020 use newer fob families, where aftermarket coverage is thinner.
Every Jaguar key job starts with ownership verification (photo ID plus registration or title) and a VIN check, because several Jaguar fobs look alike but are not interchangeable. S-Type, X-Type and 2004-2009 XJ keys are normally programmed with a scan tool through the OBD-II port, and the security procedure can include a timed wait before the car accepts new keys. The older XJ8 and XK8 crypto keys need a programmer with early-Jaguar coverage. Smart-key Jaguars are written to the KVM or RFA, and the method depends on that module's software: some versions accept a new key over OBD-II with JLR-specific software, others need the module read on the bench or a direct connection to the internal CAN network, and the newest cars may need a working key with the alarm disarmed. A battery maintainer stays connected throughout, since a voltage dip mid-procedure can fail the job. The emergency blade is cut to match your door lock so the backup key works too.
All XF keys lost
Losing every key to a Jaguar can be recoverable, but the route depends on the year. For the Ford-era S-Type and X-Type we cut a Tibbe key to the lock and program it through OBD-II, usually the simplest case, though the result still depends on the car's module and our tool coverage. The 2000-2006 XJ8 and XK8 and the 2004-2009 XJ can be done with the right early-Jaguar coverage, though an aging security module sometimes has to come out for a bench read. Smart-key cars from 2007 through about 2020 vary by module version; some years are covered over OBD-II and others need the module removed, which takes longer than adding a spare. For the E-Pace, the I-Pace and the facelifted cars from about 2020 on, the dealer is often the realistic answer, and we say so up front. We verify your ID and proof of ownership before making any key.
- Gather your documents and the VIN. Find your registration or title and a government photo ID in the same name. Note the VIN, which is printed on the driver's side of the dashboard and usually on your insurance card. If the paperwork is locked in the car, tell us; we'll open the vehicle first and check it there.
- Get into the vehicle without damage. If the car is locked, we open it with non-destructive tools such as an inflatable wedge and a long-reach rod, or by picking the door lock. Some vehicles need a careful approach to avoid triggering the alarm, which can interfere with programming later.
- Originate a new key from the car. With no key to copy, the cuts come from the vehicle itself. We retrieve the key code through manufacturer channels where possible, or decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool. Then we cut the blade on our code machine and confirm it turns the lock smoothly.
- Program the key to the immobilizer. All-keys-lost programming often takes longer than adding a key, because the car has no trusted key to authorize the change. We follow the procedure your Jaguar XF requires, then confirm the engine starts and keeps running and the remote or keyless functions respond.
- Erase missing keys and add a spare. Once the car starts, we remove the lost keys from memory wherever the system allows, so they can't start the engine if someone finds them. Making a second key during the same visit costs much less than a repeat all-keys-lost call down the road.
Dealer or mobile locksmith?
The biggest difference between a dealership and a mobile locksmith is where the work happens. A dealer programs keys in its service bay, so if every key is lost, the car usually has to be towed there, and you work around the service department's schedule and the time it takes to order a key by VIN. Julian's Locksmith brings the cutting machine, key blanks and programming equipment to the car, whether it sits in your driveway, a workplace lot or a parking structure. For a 2024 Jaguar XF we can program on-site, that means no tow and no shuttle rides back and forth. The trade-off is real, though: on vehicles where only the dealer can program keys, a tow or appointment may still be necessary, and we'll say so before you spend anything on our visit.
How the job works
- Identify the exact key your XF uses. Every job starts with the VIN, the trim and a look at any key you still have. From those we confirm the keyway, the transponder or smart-key chip, the remote frequency, the FCC ID and the button layout. Two Jaguar XF keys that look identical can carry different electronics, so this step keeps the wrong part from ever reaching the car.
- Verify ownership before any work. Before cutting or programming, we compare your government photo ID with the vehicle registration or title and check that the VIN on the paperwork matches the VIN on the dash. If the registration is locked inside, we open the car first, confirm the documents, and only then make the key.
- Get the key code or decode the lock. A key is cut from a code, not a guess. When the factory code can be retrieved through manufacturer channels after ownership is verified, we use it. When it can't, we decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool that reads the wafer positions without damaging anything, then work out any missing cuts.
- Cut the blade on-site. Cutting happens right beside your car. For a smart key, that means the emergency blade hidden inside the fob; for a transponder or remote-head key, it's the main blade you'll use every day. We deburr the cuts and check the fit in each lock so nothing binds or sticks later on.
- Program the chip, remote or smart key. Programming tells the car's computers that the new key belongs to the vehicle. Transponder chips are added to the immobilizer, remote buttons to the body control module, and proximity fobs to the keyless system. If a step requires dealer-only access on your XF, you'll have heard that before we arrived, not halfway through the job.
- Test everything and clear out old keys. Before we leave, every function gets checked: doors, trunk or liftgate, panic button, remote range, engine start, and the emergency blade in the driver's door. If keys are missing, we delete them from the car's memory where the system allows, so a lost key can no longer start the engine.
What affects the price of an XF key
- The type of key. Price follows complexity. The more the key does, the more it costs to replace: brass blade, then chip, then remote buttons, then full keyless entry and push-button start. If your XF came with different key styles by trim, the one your car actually uses is the one that sets the quote.
- Factory or aftermarket parts. Factory keys and fobs carry the manufacturer's part number and usually the highest parts cost. Quality aftermarket keys use compatible electronics at a lower price and work well on many vehicles. We tell you which options we trust for your car, and where an aftermarket version has known range or fit issues, we steer you to OEM.
- All keys lost or adding a key. Adding a key while a working one is in hand is the simpler job. With every key gone, we may have to open the car, decode a lock to originate the cuts, and run a longer programming routine, so all-keys-lost work takes more time and costs more.
- Programming complexity and security access. Two cars with similar-looking keys can program very differently. Newer platforms often guard key programming behind encrypted access or paid credentials, while older systems allow straightforward OBD-II pairing. We check the exact procedure for your VIN before quoting, so the number reflects the real work involved.
XF key types explained
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Proximity keys bring a security trade-off worth understanding. Because the fob is always listening, thieves with relay equipment can stretch its signal from inside your house to the car in the driveway. Keeping the fob away from exterior walls, or in a signal-blocking pouch, closes that gap, and some fobs offer a sleep mode described in the owner's manual. If a smart key for your 2024 Jaguar XF is lost or stolen, programming a replacement is the moment to delete the missing fob from the car's memory. And be wary of used fobs from online sellers: a lot of them are locked to the vehicle they came from and can't be reprogrammed to yours.
Why a spare key pays for itself
- A spare turns a future all-keys-lost emergency into a simple add-a-key job. With one working key in hand, programming is quicker, and the chip or fob can often be paired without decoding locks or reading modules, which keeps the cost of a lost key far lower.
- Some vehicles make it hard to add a key once you're down to one. Certain immobilizer systems let an owner program an extra key on-board only when two working keys are present, so a second key preserves the easy options for later and avoids a full reset.
- A spare stored safely at home rescues you from a locked car with the fob sitting on the seat, a key dropped somewhere along a hiking trail, or a fob that stops responding on a busy morning. Keep it indoors, never in a magnetic box under the bumper.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Photograph the back of your fob and any key tag that came with the car. The FCC ID, part number and key code printed there make ordering a replacement faster and more accurate. Store the photos somewhere you can reach from any device, not only on the phone that might go missing along with the keys.
- Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
- Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
- If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
Common Jaguar key problems
- Flip-key hinges on the S-Type, X-Type and 2004-2009 XJ wear out, leaving a blade that flops or won't lock open. The 4D60 chip and circuit board usually survive, so a new shell and blade can save the original remote.
- A weak CR2032 in a Jaguar smart key causes intermittent no-start or key-not-detected warnings before the fob dies completely. Most smart-key models have a backup procedure, described in the owner's manual, that lets the car read a fob with a low battery.
- Low 12-volt battery voltage produces odd immobilizer and keyless-entry faults and can abort key programming partway through. Several Jaguars mount the battery in the trunk, which makes a dead battery and a locked car a trickier combination.
- Tibbe keys on 2000s Jaguars wear along with the ignition and door locks. A key cut to factory code, rather than copied from a worn original, usually works far better in a tired ignition cylinder.
- Used or online-bought Jaguar smart keys are usually locked to the car they came from, and some can be reused only after an unlock or re-flash service. Check with us before buying a secondhand fob that only looks right.
- Owners often forget the mechanical emergency blade hidden inside the smart key. If the fob or car battery dies, that blade fits a driver's door cylinder that on many models sits under a small cap on the handle.
- Proximity-key Jaguars, like other keyless cars, are exposed to relay attacks that stretch the fob's signal from inside your house to the car. A signal-blocking pouch and an OBD-II port lock are sensible, inexpensive precautions.
- Bargain aftermarket smart keys sometimes pair for lock and unlock yet fail the start or proximity functions. Matching the original part number and testing every function after programming avoids a second trip.
Proof of ownership
Before we cut or program a key for any vehicle, we verify that you have the right to it. Please have two things ready: the current registration or the title, and a government-issued photo ID with a matching name. We also check that the VIN on those documents matches the VIN plate on the dashboard. If the registration is locked inside the car, that's fine; we open the vehicle first, check the paperwork in the glove box, and only then make the key. If something doesn't line up, we stop and sort it out before any key is made.
Frequently asked questions
When can you come out to Southern California for a car key?
We work every day from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., weekends included. Weekends are included. Call (951) 903-3193 and we'll give you an honest ETA to Southern California based on where we are at the time. If you're stuck outside our hours, it's usually smarter to leave the car parked and locked, get home safely, and call when we open than to pay for an overnight tow.
Can you make an XF key from the VIN alone?
The VIN is a starting point, not a finished key. For many vehicles, the factory key code can be obtained from the VIN through manufacturer channels once ownership is verified, which lets us cut a blade that matches your locks. The chip or fob still has to be programmed at the vehicle, so we need access to the car itself. Where no code is available, we decode a lock instead.
Can you make a key for my XF if I've lost every key?
In most cases, yes. We verify ownership, open the car without damage if needed, originate a key from the key code or by decoding a door lock, and program it to the immobilizer on-site. A few platforms restrict all-keys-lost programming to the dealer, and some need a module read on the bench before a new key is accepted. We'll tell you which applies to your 2024 Jaguar XF when you call.
What do I need to show before you make a key for my XF?
A current registration or title and a government-issued photo ID in the same name. We match the VIN on the paperwork with the one on the dashboard before any cutting or programming. If you're not the registered owner, bring the owner's written authorization and a copy of their ID. If the documents are locked in the car, we'll open it first and check them there.
Do you come to Southern California to make car keys, or do I bring the car to you?
We come to you. Julian's Locksmith is a mobile-only service, so the van drives to wherever the car is parked in Southern California: your driveway, an apartment lot, a workplace or a shopping center. That matters most when every key is lost, because it saves you a tow. Just make sure we'll have room to work beside the driver's door and that the vehicle is accessible when we arrive.
