2010 Saturn Vue Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2010 Saturn Vue belongs to the Vue Second generation (Opel Antara-based) and uses a transponder (chip) key and a key with a separate remote fob. Its immobilizer chip: Philips 46 (GM Circle Plus / PASS-Key III+). We can originate, cut and program keys for this vehicle on site, including when every key is lost. Julian's Locksmith cuts and programs Vue keys on site; call (951) 903-3193 with your VIN for a quote.

Keys tend to vanish far from home: a gym locker, a freeway rest stop, a jobsite across the Inland Empire. When the vehicle is a 2010 Saturn Vue and no spare is within reach, the practical fix is a locksmith who comes to the car. Julian's Locksmith serves Southern California from our base in San Bernardino with a mobile van set up for automotive key work. Tell us where the car is parked and what kind of key it used, and we'll give you an honest ETA and a quote. Once we're there and ownership is confirmed, we make the key from the car itself, using the VIN, lock decoding, or both, and program it before you drive off.

The 2008-2010 Vue moved to a transponder key with a Philips 46 Circle Plus chip in its head, cut on a GM Daewoo-style blade rather than the B111 used on most GM models of the time. Keyless entry stayed on a separate remote fob. XE, XR, Red Line and Green Line hybrid models all use the same key family, and the same blank later served the Chevrolet Captiva Sport, which was built from this design. A cut key without a learned chip will turn the lock but not start the engine.
What's specific to the 2010 Vue
2010 was the final model year of the Vue Second generation (Opel Antara-based). Late-run cars occasionally pick up running changes, so we check the VIN instead of assuming a 2010 Saturn Vue matches a 2008. A 2010 Saturn Vue is about 16 years old. Original keys are often worn smooth, and some factory remotes for cars this age are discontinued, so we may suggest a quality aftermarket remote or a separate fob. Because older immobilizers are simpler, all-keys-lost jobs on cars this age are usually more straightforward than on late models.
If a newly cut key turns the 2010 Vue's ignition but the engine cranks and dies, the transponder isn't recognized yet; that's a programming step, not a cutting problem, and it's handled at the car.
Key options for the 2010 Saturn Vue
- Transponder (chip) key. A transponder key carries a small chip in its head, usually a glass capsule or a carbon wafer, with no battery of its own. When you turn the key in a 2010 Saturn Vue that uses one, an antenna ring around the ignition energizes the chip and asks for its code. If the answer matches what the immobilizer has stored, the engine is allowed to run. If it doesn't, you get the classic symptoms: the engine cranks but won't fire, or it fires and dies after a second, and the security light on the dash flashes or stays lit. That's why a perfectly cut copy without a programmed chip will open the doors but won't start the car.
- Key with separate remote fob. Some Saturn Vue owners carry two pieces: a transponder key for the ignition and a separate remote fob on the same ring. Because they work independently, you only have to replace what's actually missing or broken. A lost remote still leaves you with a key that opens the doors and starts the engine, so it's an inconvenience rather than an emergency. A lost key is the more urgent half, since it has to be cut and its chip programmed before the car will run. We stock and program both sides, and if the whole ring is gone, we handle the key first and then pair a new remote.
How the Saturn immobilizer works on the Vue
Saturn's 2000-2010 model years split into four security setups, and the nameplate plus the year tells us which one your car has. The 2000-2002 S-Series, the 2000-2005 L-Series, the 2002-2007 Vue and the 2003-2007 Ion all use GM's Passlock. The key carries no chip at all. Instead, a magnet and Hall-effect sensor in the ignition lock cylinder send a coded value to the body control module, and a mismatch cuts fuel and flashes the Security light. The 2005-2007 Relay minivan uses PASS-Key 3, with a transponder molded into the key head. Saturn's last GM-engineered models, the Aura, Sky, Outlook and 2008-2010 Vue, use PASS-Key 3+, better known as Circle Plus, built around a Philips 46 chip. The exception is the Belgian-built Astra, which carries Opel's own immobilizer with an ID46 chip inside a flip key and a security code behind it. Every Saturn of this era starts with a turned key; none offered push-button start. GM wound the brand down during 2009 and early 2010, so no Saturn newer than the 2010 model year exists.
- Ilco lists B114-PT and B114R-PT transponder keys for this Vue; the B111 blank used on the Aura and Outlook will not fit.
- It was built at Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, as a version of the Opel Antara, which explains its unusual GM key blade.
- Strattec lists part 7011685 for this Vue's transponder key, cross-referenced to the Ilco B114-PT.
Programming a 2010 Vue key
With one working key, GM's on-board learn adds a new key at the vehicle with no computer: the working key is cycled first, then the new key must follow within about ten seconds. Without a working key, we cut the blade by code and program the chip through the OBD-II port, a routine that includes a timed security wait and erases the keys the car knew before. The remote is programmed separately, and on a Vue that step needs a scan tool.
Lost every key to your Vue?
- Gather your documents and the VIN. Find your registration or title and a government photo ID in the same name. Note the VIN, which is printed on the driver's side of the dashboard and usually on your insurance card. If the paperwork is locked in the car, tell us; we'll open the vehicle first and check it there.
- Get into the vehicle without damage. If the car is locked, we open it with non-destructive tools such as an inflatable wedge and a long-reach rod, or by picking the door lock. Some vehicles need a careful approach to avoid triggering the alarm, which can interfere with programming later.
- Originate a new key from the car. Originating a key means building it without a sample. The door lock usually reveals most of the cuts; any it doesn't are worked out by test-cutting and trying the ignition or a second lock. The finished blade should feel like a factory key, not a forced fit.
- Program the key to the immobilizer. Next, the new key is introduced to the car's security system. Many vehicles allow this through the OBD-II port with a PIN or security procedure. Some all-keys-lost cases require reading a module on the bench, and a few platforms only allow dealer programming, which we'll tell you up front.
- Erase missing keys and add a spare. Once the car starts, we remove the lost keys from memory wherever the system allows, so they can't start the engine if someone finds them. Making a second key during the same visit costs much less than a repeat all-keys-lost call down the road.
Why a spare key pays for itself
- A spare turns a future all-keys-lost emergency into a simple add-a-key job. With one working key in hand, programming is quicker, and the chip or fob can often be paired without decoding locks or reading modules, which keeps the cost of a lost key far lower.
- Two drivers sharing one key is a daily negotiation. A second key lets a partner, teenager or coworker use the vehicle without handing keys back and forth in parking lots, and it means one person losing their key ring doesn't leave the whole household stuck.
- When you sell or trade in the vehicle, buyers and dealers expect two keys. A missing key can come up during an appraisal or a private-sale negotiation, so having both on hand keeps the conversation about the car, not about what it will cost the next owner to replace one.
Dealer or mobile locksmith?
Dealers have one clear advantage: direct access to the manufacturer's own systems. Some newer vehicles tie key programming to online authorization that only a dealer can use, and certain all-keys-lost situations on specific platforms still require it. A good locksmith knows where those lines are. Where we can do the job, we use professional programming equipment that talks to the same immobilizer and keyless systems through the OBD-II port, and in many cases the result is identical: a properly registered key that starts the car. Where we can't, we can often still help by opening the vehicle, cutting a mechanical blade from code, or helping you gather what the dealer will ask for so that visit goes smoothly. For your Saturn Vue, ask us directly and you'll get a plain answer.
Vue key battery
If a new CR2032 doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.
How the job works
- Identify the exact key your Vue uses. Every job starts with the VIN, the trim and a look at any key you still have. From those we confirm the keyway, the transponder or smart-key chip, the remote frequency, the FCC ID and the button layout. Two Saturn Vue keys that look identical can carry different electronics, so this step keeps the wrong part from ever reaching the car.
- Verify ownership before any work. Before cutting or programming, we compare your government photo ID with the vehicle registration or title and check that the VIN on the paperwork matches the VIN on the dash. If the registration is locked inside, we open the car first, confirm the documents, and only then make the key.
- Get the key code or decode the lock. A key is cut from a code, not a guess. When the factory code can be retrieved through manufacturer channels after ownership is verified, we use it. When it can't, we decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool that reads the wafer positions without damaging anything, then work out any missing cuts.
- Cut the blade on-site. Our van carries a code-cutting machine that handles both traditional edge-cut blades and the laser-cut, side-milled profiles common on newer keys. The blade is cut to the code, then test-fitted in a door lock and the ignition or emergency keyhole to confirm smooth operation before any programming begins.
- Program the chip, remote or smart key. With the blade done, we connect to the OBD-II port and register the new key with the immobilizer. Depending on the Saturn system, this may involve a security PIN, a timed waiting period, or on-board button sequences for the remote. On some vehicles we clone a working key's chip instead, when that's the more reliable path.
- Test everything and clear out old keys. Before we leave, every function gets checked: doors, trunk or liftgate, panic button, remote range, engine start, and the emergency blade in the driver's door. If keys are missing, we delete them from the car's memory where the system allows, so a lost key can no longer start the engine.
What affects the price of a Vue key
- The type of key. The biggest factor is technology. A plain mechanical key is a cutting job only. A transponder key adds a chip and programming. Remote-head and flip keys add a circuit board, and a proximity fob for a push-button Saturn Vue is the most involved of all, both in the part itself and in the programming.
- All keys lost or adding a key. On some vehicles, losing the last key changes the programming entirely, from a quick add-key procedure to a full immobilizer reset or a module read on the bench. That extra labor shows up in the price, and it's the strongest argument for keeping a spare in the house.
- Programming complexity and security access. Two cars with similar-looking keys can program very differently. Newer platforms often guard key programming behind encrypted access or paid credentials, while older systems allow straightforward OBD-II pairing. We check the exact procedure for your VIN before quoting, so the number reflects the real work involved.
- Blade style and cutting. The blade still matters on keyless cars, because the emergency insert has to fit the door lock. Cutting by code is standard for us. Decoding a door lock when no key or code exists adds time, and so does progressing any cuts the door lock doesn't show.

Common Saturn key problems
- The B96 keys used on the S-Series, L-Series and first-generation Vue are now more than twenty years into service, and copies of copies drift from factory depths. A fresh key cut by code often cures a sticky, hard-to-turn ignition.
- Inland Empire heat drains the CR2032 cells in most Saturn remotes faster than mild climates do. If range shrinks before the buttons quit, replace the battery before assuming the remote or the car has failed.
- On some 2006-2007 Ions, Saturn bulletin 06-02-35-017 traced intermittent no-crank complaints, a clicking sound and a flashing Security light to a poor contact on the Passlock resistor inside the ignition switch.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
- If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
- Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2010 Saturn Vue?
We can originate, cut and program keys for this vehicle on site, including when every key is lost. The 2010 Vue uses a transponder (chip) key and a key with a separate remote fob.
Can you make a Vue key from the VIN alone?
The VIN is a starting point, not a finished key. For many vehicles, the factory key code can be obtained from the VIN through manufacturer channels once ownership is verified, which lets us cut a blade that matches your locks. The chip or fob still has to be programmed at the vehicle, so we need access to the car itself. Where no code is available, we decode a lock instead.
What happens to the key I lost? Can it still start my Saturn?
When we program new keys, we can usually erase lost keys from the immobilizer, which stops them from starting the engine. On some systems the car only remembers the keys present during programming, so the lost one drops off automatically. Keep in mind that a lost key's metal blade can still open the doors, so if it went missing with something that shows your address, ask about rekeying the door locks.
What do I need to show before you make a key for my Vue?
A current registration or title and a government-issued photo ID in the same name. We match the VIN on the paperwork with the one on the dashboard before any cutting or programming. If you're not the registered owner, bring the owner's written authorization and a copy of their ID. If the documents are locked in the car, we'll open it first and check them there.
Can you fix a broken Saturn key instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the shell is cracked, the buttons are worn or the blade snapped, but the circuit board and chip are healthy, we can transfer the electronics into a new housing and cut a fresh blade to your key code. Your existing programming stays intact. If the board has been damaged by water or impact, a repair won't last, and we'll recommend a new programmed key instead.
Is an aftermarket key as good as a factory key for a Saturn Vue?
For many vehicles, a quality aftermarket key works just like the original: it starts the car, operates the locks and fits the keyways. Differences tend to show up in housing durability, button feel and sometimes remote range. For certain smart keys, a factory fob is the more reliable choice. We'll tell you honestly which options we'd put on our own car for your Vue and let you make the call.
Is the 2010 Saturn Vue push-to-start?
No. The 2010 Vue uses a turn-key ignition, so the key is cut to match the ignition and doors and then programmed to the immobilizer.
What battery does a 2010 Saturn Vue key use?
Fobs for the 2010 Vue use a CR2032 coin cell. Replace it when range drops or the car shows a key-battery warning. If the fob still fails with a fresh battery, the board, buttons or programming may be the problem, which we can test on site.
