2006 Saturn Vue Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2006 Saturn Vue belongs to the Vue First generation and uses a basic mechanical key and a key with a separate remote fob. We can originate, cut and program keys for this vehicle on site, including when every key is lost. Julian's Locksmith cuts Vue keys on site; call (951) 903-3193 with your VIN for a quote.

2006 Saturn Vue Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

Losing the only key to a 2006 Saturn Vue usually happens at the worst moment: a parking lot after work, a trailhead, a driveway with the kids already buckled in. You don't need a tow truck or a dealership appointment to fix it. Julian's Locksmith drives a fully equipped service van to you in Southern California, confirms you own the vehicle, then cuts a new blade and programs the chip or fob right where the car is parked. Before we roll, we'll tell you over the phone what your Vue needs, whether that's a simple transponder key or a proximity fob, and what the job will involve. You get a quote before any cutting starts, and the decision stays yours.

First-generation Vue keys are plain steel with no transponder, cut on the same B96 blank family Saturn used for its late S-Series and L-Series cars. One key works the doors, liftgate and ignition. The theft check happens through the Passlock sensor in the ignition lock cylinder, not in the key. Keyless entry came as a separate remote fob. The Red Line and the 2007 Green Line hybrid use the same key arrangement as other Vues of these years, so the trim badge does not change what we cut.

What's specific to the 2006 Vue

The 2006 Saturn Vue is the fifth of 6 model years in the Vue First generation (2002–2007), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source.

A 2006 Saturn Vue is about 20 years old. Original keys are often worn smooth, and some factory remotes for cars this age are discontinued, so we may suggest a quality aftermarket remote or a separate fob.

Key options for the 2006 Saturn Vue

  • Basic mechanical key. Before treating a Saturn Vue key as purely mechanical, we confirm it. Some keys look like plain metal with a rubber or plastic head yet hide a transponder inside, and immobilizers arrived on different trims and model years at different times. If yours truly has no chip, the new key is cut and then tested in the doors, ignition, glove box and trunk where those locks exist. Mechanical blades also show up on newer vehicles as valet keys and as the emergency insert tucked inside a smart fob. Those blades still matter: they're how you get in when a fob battery dies, so they deserve the same careful cutting.
  • Key with separate remote fob. Some Saturn Vue owners carry two pieces: a transponder key for the ignition and a separate remote fob on the same ring. Because they work independently, you only have to replace what's actually missing or broken. A lost remote still leaves you with a key that opens the doors and starts the engine, so it's an inconvenience rather than an emergency. A lost key is the more urgent half, since it has to be cut and its chip programmed before the car will run. We stock and program both sides, and if the whole ring is gone, we handle the key first and then pair a new remote.

How Vue keys work on this generation

  • The Ilco B96 blank used on this Vue also fits the 2000-2002 S-Series and the L-Series.
  • The 2007 Green Line hybrid uses the same Passlock key system as the gasoline Vue.
  • A flashing Security light with a no-start usually points to the ignition cylinder sensor rather than the key itself.

Cutting a 2006 Vue key

No key programming is involved. We cut by code or decode a lock, and the new key starts the engine once it turns the ignition. When the ignition cylinder, Passlock sensor or a control module has been changed, the Vue needs GM's timed theft-deterrent relearn before it will run, and we can perform that at the vehicle. The remote is paired as a separate job, using the car's own routine or a scan tool. Losing every key here is a cutting job, not a programming one.

Lost every key to your Vue?

Losing every key to a Saturn rarely means a trip to the dealer. On a Passlock model we generate a key from the key code or by decoding a door or ignition lock, and once it turns the cylinder, the car starts; nothing needs programming. On the Relay and the Circle Plus models, the new key also has to be learned through the OBD-II port, and that all-keys-lost routine includes timed security waits that can add up to about half an hour. Any old key that turns up afterward may need to be learned again. The Astra is the hardest case: we decode the lock to cut its HU100 blade, but the immobilizer needs the security code, and if our equipment cannot reach it for your car, a GM dealer has to finish the programming. Proof of ownership comes before any of this.

  1. Gather your documents and the VIN. Call with the year, make, model and VIN if you can read it through the windshield, plus where the car is parked. Those details let us confirm whether your Saturn Vue can be done on-site and bring the right key, so the first trip is the only trip.
  2. Get into the vehicle without damage. Entry comes before key-making because we need access to the ignition, the OBD-II port and sometimes the documents in the glove box. We take care with weather stripping, door frames and paint, and we confirm the dash VIN matches your registration before going any further.
  3. Originate a new key from the car. With no key to copy, the cuts come from the vehicle itself. We retrieve the key code through manufacturer channels where possible, or decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool. Then we cut the blade on our code machine and confirm it turns the lock smoothly.
  4. Erase missing keys and add a spare. Once the car starts, we remove the lost keys from memory wherever the system allows, so they can't start the engine if someone finds them. Making a second key during the same visit costs much less than a repeat all-keys-lost call down the road.

Why a spare key pays for itself

  • When you sell or trade in the vehicle, buyers and dealers expect two keys. A missing key can come up during an appraisal or a private-sale negotiation, so having both on hand keeps the conversation about the car, not about what it will cost the next owner to replace one.
  • Two drivers sharing one key is a daily negotiation. A second key lets a partner, teenager or coworker use the vehicle without handing keys back and forth in parking lots, and it means one person losing their key ring doesn't leave the whole household stuck.
  • A spare stored safely at home rescues you from a locked car with the fob sitting on the seat, a key dropped somewhere along a hiking trail, or a fob that stops responding on a busy morning. Keep it indoors, never in a magnetic box under the bumper.

Dealer or mobile locksmith?

The biggest difference between a dealership and a mobile locksmith is where the work happens. A dealer programs keys in its service bay, so if every key is lost, the car usually has to be towed there, and you work around the service department's schedule and the time it takes to order a key by VIN. Julian's Locksmith brings the cutting machine, key blanks and programming equipment to the car, whether it sits in your driveway, a workplace lot or a parking structure. For a 2006 Saturn Vue we can program on-site, that means no tow and no shuttle rides back and forth. The trade-off is real, though: on vehicles where only the dealer can program keys, a tow or appointment may still be necessary, and we'll say so before you spend anything on our visit.

Vue key battery

If a new CR2032 doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.

How the job works

  1. Verify ownership before any work. California holds licensed locksmiths responsible for knowing whose car they're making keys for. We record your name, the VIN and the plate on a work order. If you aren't the registered owner, you'll need the owner's written authorization along with your own photo ID before we begin.
  2. Get the key code or decode the lock. A key is cut from a code, not a guess. When the factory code can be retrieved through manufacturer channels after ownership is verified, we use it. When it can't, we decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool that reads the wafer positions without damaging anything, then work out any missing cuts.
  3. Test everything and clear out old keys. The last step is a short walkthrough. We show you how many keys the car now recognizes, point out the dead-fob start method for your vehicle, and hand you an itemized receipt. If a spare makes sense, it's simplest to add it during this same visit while the equipment is already connected.

What affects the price of a Vue key

  • Factory or aftermarket parts. Some owners want an exact factory match; others just want a dependable key that starts the car. Both are reasonable choices. The part you pick changes the quote, so we lay out the options side by side, with the trade-offs in fit, button feel and long-term durability, before you decide.
  • Blade style and cutting. Traditional edge-cut blades are quick to cut. High-security laser-cut blades, with a groove milled into the side, need a specialized machine and more care, and the blanks themselves cost more. If we have to decode a lock to find the cuts, that adds labor as well.
  • Travel, timing and extra repairs. Sometimes a key problem is really a lock problem: an ignition that won't turn even with the right key, or a door cylinder that has been jammed for years. Fixing those is separate work. We point them out, explain the options, and quote the whole job up front so the bill holds no surprises.

Call (951) 903-3193 with your VIN and the keys you still have, and we'll quote the job before any work starts.

Common Saturn key problems

  • The B96 keys used on the S-Series, L-Series and first-generation Vue are now more than twenty years into service, and copies of copies drift from factory depths. A fresh key cut by code often cures a sticky, hard-to-turn ignition.
  • On some 2006-2007 Ions, Saturn bulletin 06-02-35-017 traced intermittent no-crank complaints, a clicking sound and a flashing Security light to a poor contact on the Passlock resistor inside the ignition switch.
  • Circle Plus keys on the Aura, Sky, Outlook and 2008-2010 Vue keep the chip in a plastic head that cracks with age. If the chip falls out, the key still opens the doors but the engine will not start.
  • The 2003-2007 Ion and the 2007 Sky were added to GM's 2014 ignition switch recall, which warned that a heavy key ring could turn the switch out of RUN while driving. Keep the ring light and check your VIN for open recall work.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.
  • Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
  • If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.

Proof of ownership

Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith make a key for a 2006 Saturn Vue?

We can originate, cut and program keys for this vehicle on site, including when every key is lost. The 2006 Vue uses a basic mechanical key and a key with a separate remote fob.

When can you come out to Southern California for a car key?

We work every day from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., weekends included. Weekends are included. Call (951) 903-3193 and we'll give you an honest ETA to Southern California based on where we are at the time. If you're stuck outside our hours, it's usually smarter to leave the car parked and locked, get home safely, and call when we open than to pay for an overnight tow.

Do you come to Southern California to make car keys, or do I bring the car to you?

We come to you. Julian's Locksmith is a mobile-only service, so the van drives to wherever the car is parked in Southern California: your driveway, an apartment lot, a workplace or a shopping center. That matters most when every key is lost, because it saves you a tow. Just make sure we'll have room to work beside the driver's door and that the vehicle is accessible when we arrive.

Is an aftermarket key as good as a factory key for a Saturn Vue?

For many vehicles, a quality aftermarket key works just like the original: it starts the car, operates the locks and fits the keyways. Differences tend to show up in housing durability, button feel and sometimes remote range. For certain smart keys, a factory fob is the more reliable choice. We'll tell you honestly which options we'd put on our own car for your Vue and let you make the call.

Is the 2006 Saturn Vue push-to-start?

No. The 2006 Vue uses a turn-key ignition, so the key is cut to match the ignition and doors.

What battery does a 2006 Saturn Vue key use?

Fobs for the 2006 Vue use a CR2032 coin cell. Replace it when range drops or the car shows a key-battery warning. If the fob still fails with a fresh battery, the board, buttons or programming may be the problem, which we can test on site.
