2019 Jaguar XF Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2019 Jaguar XF belongs to the XF X260 (2019 and later) and uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. We can usually add spare keys on site; some situations, such as all keys lost on certain trims, need extra steps or a dealer-supplied part. Julian's Locksmith cuts and programs XF keys on site; call (951) 903-3193 with your VIN for a quote.

Bought a used 2019 Jaguar XF and got one key at signing? That's common, and it's worth fixing early. A single key leaves you one lost pocket away from an all-keys-lost job, and you have no idea how many other keys the previous owners had programmed to the car. Julian's Locksmith can meet you in Southern California, verify the registration in your name, cut and program a second key, and, where the system allows, clear old keys from the immobilizer so only the ones in your hand will start the engine. It's a simple step that protects both the car and your budget, and we walk you through exactly what was done before we pack up.
2019 XF key specs
| Generation | X260 (2019 and later), 2019–2024 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Key blade | HU101 emergency blade |
| Locksmith support | Spares yes; some cases need extra steps |
Later XFs keep a five-button proximity smart key with a hidden emergency blade and push-button start, but the fob family changes. Supplier listings show KOBJTF10A on some 2019 cars, the newer KOBJXF18A on 2020-2022 cars, and a further revised fob, KOBJXF23A, in at least one listing for 2024. The 2021 update also brought Pivi Pro infotainment and newer modules. Because the fobs cannot be swapped, we identify yours by the number on the fob and by VIN rather than by appearance.
What's specific to the 2019 XF
2019 was the first model year of the XF X260 (2019 and later). Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2019 Jaguar XF we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything. The key style carried over from the previous generation, but immobilizer data and part numbers can still differ, so a key from a 2018 is not a safe substitute.
A 2019 Jaguar XF is about 7 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Key options for the 2019 Jaguar XF
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Making a new smart key is mostly a programming job. The fob has to match the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip, and then the keyless system must be told to accept it, normally through the OBD-II port. Depending on the platform, that can mean entering a PIN, waiting through a timed security procedure, or on some newer vehicles, using manufacturer online access. When every key is lost, certain models need a module removed and read on the bench. For your Jaguar XF X260 (2019 and later), we'll tell you which of those applies, and if a step is dealer-only, you'll hear it before we drive out. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob is cut by code during the same visit.
How the Jaguar immobilizer works on the XF
Jaguar keys from 2000 on fall into four families, and knowing which one your car uses explains most of what a key job involves. The XJ8 (through 2003) and XK8 (through 2006) carried over from the late 1990s and use an 8-cut Tibbe key plus a separate four-button remote; on 2000-2003 cars the transponder is a Megamos crypto (ID48) chip. The S-Type, X-Type and 2004-2009 XJ share a Ford-era immobilizer and a 6-cut Tibbe key carrying a Texas Instruments 4D60 chip, usually built into a flip remote. Jaguar's Smart Key arrived with the 2007 XK and 2009 XF, a proximity fob with a Hitag2 (ID46) transponder and push-button start. From the 2011 XJ, and then the XF, F-Type, XE and F-Pace, Jaguar moved to the KOBJTF10A fob it shares with Land Rover, which uses a Hitag Pro (ID49) transponder and an HU101 emergency blade. On smart-key cars the key data lives in a keyless vehicle module (KVM), called the remote function actuator (RFA) on later models, and its software version decides how a key can be added. The E-Pace, I-Pace and the facelifted cars from about 2020 use newer fob families, where aftermarket coverage is thinner.
- The 2021 update gave the XF Pivi Pro infotainment and newer modules, which can narrow aftermarket key coverage.
- The 2024 model year was the XF's last in the US.
- Supplier listings show at least three fob families across 2019-2024 XFs: KOBJTF10A, KOBJXF18A and KOBJXF23A.
Programming a 2019 XF key
Add-key work on 2019 and later XFs generally needs a working key, a disarmed alarm and current JLR-capable software, sometimes with a direct connection to the internal CAN network. Coverage depends on the module and on model year, and it narrows on the newest cars. All-keys-lost on these XFs often goes to a Jaguar dealer, and we will tell you that before any work begins.
Spares depend on current JLR tool coverage for your VIN; all-keys-lost on late builds often needs a Jaguar dealer.
Lost every key to your XF?
- Gather your documents and the VIN. Call with the year, make, model and VIN if you can read it through the windshield, plus where the car is parked. Those details let us confirm whether your Jaguar XF can be done on-site and bring the right key, so the first trip is the only trip.
- Get into the vehicle without damage. Entry comes before key-making because we need access to the ignition, the OBD-II port and sometimes the documents in the glove box. We take care with weather stripping, door frames and paint, and we confirm the dash VIN matches your registration before going any further.
- Originate a new key from the car. Originating a key means building it without a sample. The door lock usually reveals most of the cuts; any it doesn't are worked out by test-cutting and trying the ignition or a second lock. The finished blade should feel like a factory key, not a forced fit.
- Program the key to the immobilizer. Next, the new key is introduced to the car's security system. Many vehicles allow this through the OBD-II port with a PIN or security procedure. Some all-keys-lost cases require reading a module on the bench, and a few platforms only allow dealer programming, which we'll tell you up front.
- Erase missing keys and add a spare. A lost key's metal blade can still open your doors even after its chip is erased. If the keys disappeared along with something showing where you live or park, consider rekeying the car's door lock cylinders too. We'll also recommend leaving with two working keys, not one.
Why a spare key pays for itself
- A spare turns a future all-keys-lost emergency into a simple add-a-key job. With one working key in hand, programming is quicker, and the chip or fob can often be paired without decoding locks or reading modules, which keeps the cost of a lost key far lower.
- Electronics fail without warning. A fob dropped on concrete, run through the washing machine or soaked at the pool can quit for good. With a second programmed key, that's an annoyance you fix on your own schedule, not a stranded car that needs attention today.
- A spare stored safely at home rescues you from a locked car with the fob sitting on the seat, a key dropped somewhere along a hiking trail, or a fob that stops responding on a busy morning. Keep it indoors, never in a magnetic box under the bumper.
Dealer or mobile locksmith?
Dealers have one clear advantage: direct access to the manufacturer's own systems. Some newer vehicles tie key programming to online authorization that only a dealer can use, and certain all-keys-lost situations on specific platforms still require it. A good locksmith knows where those lines are. Where we can do the job, we use professional programming equipment that talks to the same immobilizer and keyless systems through the OBD-II port, and in many cases the result is identical: a properly registered key that starts the car. Where we can't, we can often still help by opening the vehicle, cutting a mechanical blade from code, or helping you gather what the dealer will ask for so that visit goes smoothly. For your Jaguar XF, ask us directly and you'll get a plain answer.
XF key battery
A fob battery rarely dies all at once. The warning signs build: you have to get closer to the car before the doors respond, the dash shows a key battery or key-not-detected message, or the push-button start only works with the fob held near the button. Inland heat speeds that decline, especially for fobs left in a hot cabin or on the dashboard. Keep a spare replacement at home in a cool drawer, sealed in its original package, and buy from a busy store where stock turns over quickly. A cell that sat on a shelf for years may arrive already partly spent.
How the job works
- Identify the exact key your XF uses. We ask a few quick questions on the phone: the year, whether the car starts with a turn key or a button, how many keys you have left, and whether the remote still works the doors. Then we check the VIN against our programming references so the van arrives with the correct blank or fob, not a close guess.
- Verify ownership before any work. Before cutting or programming, we compare your government photo ID with the vehicle registration or title and check that the VIN on the paperwork matches the VIN on the dash. If the registration is locked inside, we open the car first, confirm the documents, and only then make the key.
- Get the key code or decode the lock. A key is cut from a code, not a guess. When the factory code can be retrieved through manufacturer channels after ownership is verified, we use it. When it can't, we decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool that reads the wafer positions without damaging anything, then work out any missing cuts.
- Cut the blade on-site. Our van carries a code-cutting machine that handles both traditional edge-cut blades and the laser-cut, side-milled profiles common on newer keys. The blade is cut to the code, then test-fitted in a door lock and the ignition or emergency keyhole to confirm smooth operation before any programming begins.
- Program the chip, remote or smart key. With the blade done, we connect to the OBD-II port and register the new key with the immobilizer. Depending on the Jaguar system, this may involve a security PIN, a timed waiting period, or on-board button sequences for the remote. On some vehicles we clone a working key's chip instead, when that's the more reliable path.
- Test everything and clear out old keys. The last step is a short walkthrough. We show you how many keys the car now recognizes, point out the dead-fob start method for your vehicle, and hand you an itemized receipt. If a spare makes sense, it's simplest to add it during this same visit while the equipment is already connected.
What affects the price of an XF key
- The type of key. The biggest factor is technology. A plain mechanical key is a cutting job only. A transponder key adds a chip and programming. Remote-head and flip keys add a circuit board, and a proximity fob for a push-button Jaguar XF is the most involved of all, both in the part itself and in the programming.
- All keys lost or adding a key. Adding a key while a working one is in hand is the simpler job. With every key gone, we may have to open the car, decode a lock to originate the cuts, and run a longer programming routine, so all-keys-lost work takes more time and costs more.
- Programming complexity and security access. Two cars with similar-looking keys can program very differently. Newer platforms often guard key programming behind encrypted access or paid credentials, while older systems allow straightforward OBD-II pairing. We check the exact procedure for your VIN before quoting, so the number reflects the real work involved.
- Blade style and cutting. The blade still matters on keyless cars, because the emergency insert has to fit the door lock. Cutting by code is standard for us. Decoding a door lock when no key or code exists adds time, and so does progressing any cuts the door lock doesn't show.
Call (951) 903-3193 with your VIN and the keys you still have, and we'll quote the job before any work starts.
Common Jaguar key problems
- Flip-key hinges on the S-Type, X-Type and 2004-2009 XJ wear out, leaving a blade that flops or won't lock open. The 4D60 chip and circuit board usually survive, so a new shell and blade can save the original remote.
- Bargain aftermarket smart keys sometimes pair for lock and unlock yet fail the start or proximity functions. Matching the original part number and testing every function after programming avoids a second trip.
- A weak CR2032 in a Jaguar smart key causes intermittent no-start or key-not-detected warnings before the fob dies completely. Most smart-key models have a backup procedure, described in the owner's manual, that lets the car read a fob with a low battery.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
- When a key's head cracks or its blade bends, replace it before it fails. A transponder chip can slip out of a split head, and a bent blade can break off inside the ignition or door lock, turning a simple key replacement into an extraction and repair job. Small symptoms are the inexpensive time to act.
- Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2019 Jaguar XF?
We can usually add spare keys on site; some situations, such as all keys lost on certain trims, need extra steps or a dealer-supplied part. Spares depend on current JLR tool coverage for your VIN; all-keys-lost on late builds often needs a Jaguar dealer. The 2019 XF uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.
Do you come to Southern California to make car keys, or do I bring the car to you?
We come to you. Julian's Locksmith is a mobile-only service, so the van drives to wherever the car is parked in Southern California: your driveway, an apartment lot, a workplace or a shopping center. That matters most when every key is lost, because it saves you a tow. Just make sure we'll have room to work beside the driver's door and that the vehicle is accessible when we arrive.
What happens to the key I lost? Can it still start my Jaguar?
When we program new keys, we can usually erase lost keys from the immobilizer, which stops them from starting the engine. On some systems the car only remembers the keys present during programming, so the lost one drops off automatically. Keep in mind that a lost key's metal blade can still open the doors, so if it went missing with something that shows your address, ask about rekeying the door locks.
How long does it take to make a new Jaguar XF key?
Adding a key to a car that already has a working one is usually a single short visit, often finished within an hour once we're on-site. All-keys-lost jobs take longer because we may need to open the car, decode a lock and run a longer programming routine. Some security systems also impose their own waiting periods during programming. We'll give you a realistic time estimate for your specific vehicle when you call.
Why does my XF crank but not start with a newly cut key?
That pattern points to the immobilizer, not the engine. The blade is cut correctly, so the ignition turns, but the car doesn't recognize the chip and blocks fuel or spark. A flashing security light usually confirms it. The key either wasn't programmed, carries the wrong chip type, or is an unprogrammed copy from a hardware store. Programming a correct key to your 2019 Jaguar XF resolves it.
Is an aftermarket key as good as a factory key for a Jaguar XF?
For many vehicles, a quality aftermarket key works just like the original: it starts the car, operates the locks and fits the keyways. Differences tend to show up in housing durability, button feel and sometimes remote range. For certain smart keys, a factory fob is the more reliable choice. We'll tell you honestly which options we'd put on our own car for your XF and let you make the call.
Is the 2019 Jaguar XF push-to-start?
Yes. The 2019 XF uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade. The fob also hides a mechanical emergency blade for the doors.
