2023 Audi S6 Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2023 Audi S6 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Audi dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2023 Audi S6, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Audi. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The C8 S6 sedan uses a smart fob like the C8 A6's. Push-button start and an emergency blade are standard, and advanced key adds touch-to-unlock door handles. In the US the S6 came only as a sedan in this generation, with a twin-turbo V6. Match the fob part number or VIN when ordering, because similar-looking fobs belong to other models.
What's specific to the 2023 S6
The 2023 Audi S6 is the fourth of 6 model years in the S6 C8 (Typ 4K) (2020–2025), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source. A 2023 Audi S6 is about 3 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Smart-key cars like the 2023 S6 can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.
Key options for the 2023 Audi S6
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2023 Audi S6 open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
How the Audi immobilizer works on the S6
Every Audi sold in the US from 2000 on has a transponder immobilizer, but the system behind it changed several times, and that history decides how a new key gets made. Through the mid-2000s, most models used a Megamos ID48 chip in an HU66 flip key, with the immobilizer data stored in the instrument cluster. The A6, Q7 and A8 that followed kept a flip key but added an entry-and-start module that has to be read during programming. Starting with the 2008 A5 and 2009 A4, the B8 family switched to a rectangular fob and moved immobilizer and keyless functions into a comfort control module known in the trade as BCM2; the C7 A6, first-generation A7 and D4 A8 use the same module family. Smaller MQB cars such as the 2015-2020 A3, the third-generation TT and the 2019-2025 Q3 go back to a cluster-based system. The 2017-and-later MLB Evo models protect their data far more heavily, and the newest Audis register keys through Audi's online system. US-market Audi remotes run on 315 MHz.
- 2025 was the last model year for the S6 sedan in the US.
- A fob that suddenly stops working is often just a dead battery, which we can check before anything is ordered.
Getting a 2023 S6 key from the dealer
Aftermarket programming for the C8 platform's keys is limited, so a replacement usually comes from the dealer, ordered by VIN and coded to the car. We still check your VIN against current tools before you decide. On site we handle lockouts, battery checks on a fob that stopped responding and help with arranging the dealer visit.

How we help when the key must come from Audi
Losing every key to an Audi is often solvable, but the method depends on the era. On 2000s cars with ID48 flip keys, we read the immobilizer data from the instrument cluster, sometimes on the bench, then cut a new HU66 blade by code or by decoding the door lock. On 2008-2018 slot-start and push-button models, all-keys-lost usually means removing the comfort or entry-and-start module so its memory can be read directly, which takes time and care. On many 2017-and-later models, and on the newest platforms, a lost-all situation goes through the dealer, and the car may need to be towed there. In every case we confirm ownership with your ID and registration or title before starting, and we tell you which route your VIN points to before you pay for anything.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Audi dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2023 S6 needs a dealer key
Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2023 S6 is one of them. Audi generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Audi models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.
What to bring to the dealer
Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.
While you wait for the new key
While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.
What affects the dealer's price for an S6 key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2023 S6, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
S6 key battery
A fob battery rarely dies all at once. The warning signs build: you have to get closer to the car before the doors respond, the dash shows a key battery or key-not-detected message, or the push-button start only works with the fob held near the button. Inland heat speeds that decline, especially for fobs left in a hot cabin or on the dashboard. Keep a spare replacement at home in a cool drawer, sealed in its original package, and buy from a busy store where stock turns over quickly. A cell that sat on a shelf for years may arrive already partly spent.
Common Audi key problems
- Flip keys from the 2000s wear out at the pivot, so the blade stops locking open or flops loose. A new shell with a fresh HU66 blade can usually take your original transponder and remote board, which avoids reprogramming the car.
- Remotes on older Audis can lose sync after a battery change. Pressing a remote button and then unlocking the driver's door with the blade within about a minute often resyncs them; if not, the remote needs adapting with a scan tool.
- On many Audis the driver's lock cylinder hides under a cap on the door handle and almost never gets used, so it can seize. Turning it with the emergency blade a few times a year keeps it ready for a dead 12-volt battery.
- Slot-start Audis, meaning B8-generation A4, A5 and Q5 models without advanced key, can develop a worn ignition slot that won't read or release the fob. That is an ignition switch repair, not a key problem.
- Touch-sensor door handles on advanced-key cars can fail one door at a time. The fob buttons and the start function still work, so the repair is the handle sensor, not a new key.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
- Photograph the back of your fob and any key tag that came with the car. The FCC ID, part number and key code printed there make ordering a replacement faster and more accurate. Store the photos somewhere you can reach from any device, not only on the phone that might go missing along with the keys.
- Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
- If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
- On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.
Proof of ownership
Not every situation fits the simple case, so here's how we handle the common exceptions. For a leased or financed vehicle, a registration that lists you as the registered owner or lessee works with your ID. If you just bought the car, bring the signed title or bill of sale along with your ID. For a company or fleet vehicle, we need written authorization from the business plus the driver's ID. If the car belongs to a family member, the registered owner should be present or provide signed permission and a copy of their ID. Rental vehicles go through the rental company.
