Romoland Home Lock Rekey for Lived-In Houses
Short answer: You don't need a move or a burglary to justify it. Rekey your home's locks whenever you can't name everyone holding a copy: an ex-partner, a remodel crew, a dog walker, a teenager who lost a key at school. If the locks still turn smoothly, re-pinning them costs far less than new hardware and cancels every outstanding key at once.

Count the copies of your house key that have walked out the door since you moved in. The housekeeper who stopped coming, the neighbor who fed the cat two summers ago, the contractor who finished the bathroom, the friend who stayed while you were out of town. Most Romoland homeowners can't name them all, and that's the honest reason to book a home lock rekey. We re-pin the cylinders already on your doors so every one of those copies becomes a useless piece of brass, then cut fresh keys for the people who should have them. Your hardware, finish and door prep stay exactly as they are. Call Julian's Locksmith at (951) 903-3193 and we'll walk through which locks to include.
How this works in Romoland
New pins are only half of a home lock rekey. The other half is making sure the new keys don't drift out the way the old ones did. Settle on a number before we cut: one per adult in the house, one kept somewhere safe for emergencies, and only the extras you can name a holder for. A standard Kwikset or Schlage key can be copied at almost any hardware kiosk, and stamping "Do Not Duplicate" on it is a request rather than a barrier. If several outside people need regular access, such as cleaners, caregivers or a dog walker, consider a restricted keyway like Schlage Everest, where blanks move through authorized channels and copies require the owner's approval, or a keypad deadbolt that lets you give and revoke codes. Retire the fake-rock hide-a-key, which burglars know to look for, in favor of a combination key safe mounted out of sight. Finally, keep a simple private note of who received each key, so the next rekey, whenever it comes, starts from a clean list instead of a guess.
Work included on a typical visit
- Garage-to-house and garage side doors. Builder-grade knobs on garage entry doors are often the oldest, least maintained locks in the house, sometimes without a deadbolt at all. During the rekey we re-pin what's there, note whether a deadbolt should be added, and check that the self-closing hinges many garage-to-house doors use still pull the door fully latched.
- Back, French and patio door cylinders. Rear entries vary more than front doors. French doors often have one active leaf with a keyed handleset and an inactive leaf held by flush bolts, so only one cylinder needs re-pinning. Sliding patio doors may have no outside keyhole at all, or a small keyed mortise cylinder that we can rekey to match the rest of the house.
- Getting mixed brands onto one key. One key for the whole house is a common request, and it's usually achievable. The obstacles are keyway mismatches and the occasional proprietary lock. Where a Kwikset deadbolt sits beside Schlage knobs, we may recommend a compatible cylinder or matching hardware. Weiser, Defiant and other brands get the same honest, door-by-door assessment.
- Cleaning and adjusting tired locks. A lock that sticks rarely needs replacing. Often it's packed with dust, old graphite or gummy spray oil, or the bolt drags because the door has settled. While each cylinder is apart we clean it, lubricate it with a dry PTFE product, and adjust the strike so the deadbolt throws fully without you pushing on the door.
- Restricted and high-security keyways. Some homes already have high-security cylinders, often on a front door or a gun room. These use patented keys and sometimes rotating pins or sidebars, and the manufacturer controls who can make keys. We identify what you have and explain plainly whether we can rekey it on site or whether it has to go through an authorized dealer.
Local factors in Romoland
Inland summers bake exterior locks. West-facing doors swell, strikes start to bind, and lubricant inside the cylinder breaks down into grit. When we handle a home lock rekey in Romoland's hotter months, we clean each plug, use a dry lubricant that won't gum up, and adjust strikes so the bolt throws without forcing. Smart lock batteries also drain faster in heat, so we check those while we're there.
Family homes go through keys fast: kids lose them at school, grandparents and babysitters get copies, carpool parents sometimes borrow one. A home lock rekey every so often keeps that list honest. Many families in Romoland pair it with a keypad deadbolt on the most-used door, so kids punch a code instead of carrying a key, and you can change that code the day a babysitter moves on.
When everyone leaves early and gets home late, keys get handed to whoever can meet the plumber, sign for a delivery or let the dog out midday. That's how copies multiply. Our 6:30 a.m. start every day, plus evening hours until 11:30 p.m., makes it possible to schedule a home lock rekey around a long commute, either before you head out or after you're back.
Common situations
- Consider an older homeowner whose in-home care agency has rotated through several aides over a year, each given a key at some point. The family wants one reliable way in for the current aide without the old keys still working. We'd rekey the exterior doors, suggest a keypad deadbolt on the main entry so each aide gets a personal code, and leave a mechanical key with a family member.
- For example, a kitchen remodel wraps up after four months. During that time the general contractor, the cabinet installer and a tile crew all used a key from a lockbox on the side gate, and nobody is sure how many copies were made along the way. A home lock rekey the week the final inspection passes cancels every one of those keys, and the lockbox comes down the same afternoon.
- For example, a family lists their house, a lockbox holding a key hangs on the front door for three months, and showing after showing goes through. Then the sale falls through and they decide to stay. Agents, inspectors and appraisers all had access through that box. Rekeying once the listing comes down returns the house to a key only the family holds.
- For example, a homeowner in Heritage Lake has a detached ADU whose tenant just moved out. The tenant's key opened the ADU and the side gate, and an older copy also fit the garage from a time the owners were traveling. We'd rekey the ADU to a fresh key for the next tenant, put the garage on the owners' key only, and keep the two key sets clearly separate.
From your call to the finished job
- Tell us what's changed and which doors. Call (951) 903-3193 and tell us why you're rekeying, how many exterior doors the house has, and roughly which brands are on them. A photo of your key ring or the face of each lock, texted ahead, helps us bring the right pins and cylinders.
- Confirm you live there. Someone with authority over the home needs to be there: an owner, or a resident who can show ID with the address. If you rent the house, we'll also need your landlord's approval, since the lease usually requires them to hold a working key.
- Walk the house and identify each cylinder. We walk every door with you, count keyed cylinders and note brand, keyway and condition. That walk usually turns up a lock or two nobody mentioned, like a garage side door or a keyed slider. You approve the final list before we start.
- Re-pin each cylinder. We remove each cylinder, push the plug out with a follower so the drivers and springs stay put, and replace the key pins with new ones matched to the new key. SmartKey locks reset with their tool instead. Nothing on the door gets drilled or cut.
- Test every key in every lock. Testing isn't a single turn. We check that the key enters smoothly, the bolt reaches full extension, the knob or lever retracts the latch, and the lock works from inside too. Any lock that feels off gets reopened and corrected before we pack up.
- Hand over keys and close the loop. The last step belongs to you: give keys only to the people on your list, update the garage and smart lock settings, and keep the record somewhere private. That's what keeps this rekey effective a year from now, not just this afternoon.
Pricing factors
- How many keyed cylinders the house has. If you aren't sure how many locks you have, walk around with your phone and photograph every keyhole, padlocks included. That set of photos lets us quote the home lock rekey closely and helps you decide whether a few rarely used locks are worth including.
- Brands and keyways in the mix. Builder-grade, big-box and premium brands all come apart differently. Common residential locks re-pin quickly, while some decorative or imported handlesets use unusual cylinders that take longer or need a specific part. Tell us brand names when you call, or text a photo of the key heads.
- Condition of the hardware. Clean, smooth-running locks cost the least to rekey. Cylinders packed with old oil, rusted springs or worn plugs take extra cleaning or parts, and a lock that's genuinely failing may be better replaced. We point these out during the walk-through, never as a surprise on the invoice.

Practical tips before you call
- Thinking about new hardware within the next year? Say so before the rekey. It may make more sense to replace the front entry set now and key the remaining doors to match it, rather than paying to re-pin a lock you plan to remove anyway.
- Keep one spare new key somewhere other than the house: a trusted relative's place, a safe deposit box, a locked desk drawer at work. If everyone in the household misplaces theirs at once, a spare elsewhere saves you a lockout call on top of the rekey you just paid for.
- Skip writing your address, street name or door names on key tags. If the ring is lost, that tag does the finder's homework for them. Colored key caps, or a simple code only your household understands, work just as well for telling the front door key from the gate key.
- Before the visit, write down everyone who has had a key in the last few years: family, cleaners, sitters, contractors, neighbors. The list tells you how urgent the rekey is and how many new keys to cut. It also shows whether a keypad would serve some of those people better than a key.
Common errors that cost time and money
- Changing the locks on a co-owned home during a separation without legal advice. Shutting out a spouse or co-owner who has a legal right to enter, without a court order, can create real trouble for you. Talk to a family law attorney first, and if you hold a protective order, bring it to the appointment.
- Attempting a kit on locks you haven't identified. Kwikset SmartKey cylinders need the current working key to reset, and forcing the learn tool without it can jam the mechanism. Pin kits fit only their own brand, and loose pins skittering across the floor end plenty of weekend attempts.
- Trusting a "Do Not Duplicate" stamp to control copies. Plenty of key kiosks and hardware counters will cut a standard key anyway, because the stamp is a request rather than a barrier. If copy control matters, choose a restricted keyway where blanks aren't sold over the counter.
Reaching Romoland
Romoland is about 37 miles from our San Bernardino base, roughly 42 minutes in light traffic via University Parkway to I-215 South through San Bernardino, Colton and Riverside, past March Air Reserve Base and Perris. When you call, you get an arrival estimate based on where the technician is and the traffic at that moment.
We plan the drive the way a delivery route gets planned: freeway first, Briggs Road where it makes sense, then the side streets you describe. A landmark or the color of your building helps the technician spot you.
About Romoland: In 1925 the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company developed the area as Romola Farms, selling small ranches of four to five acres for growing figs and grapes.

Frequently asked questions
How many new keys should I have cut?
One for each adult who lives in the home, one spare kept outside the house, and only as many extras as you can name a holder for. Teenagers may need their own. For cleaners or sitters, consider codes instead of keys. It's easy to cut more later from code, while recovering extra keys you've given away is not.
How long does a home lock rekey take?
Each standard cylinder takes only a short while once it's off the door. A typical house with a handful of exterior locks is often finished in about an hour, give or take, while larger homes, mixed brands, missing keys or strike adjustments add time. We'll give you an estimate on the phone and a firmer one after the walk-through.
Can the side gate, shed and casita go on my house key?
Usually. Gate latches, keyed shed locks and casita deadbolts from mainstream brands can be pinned to your house key, and commercial-grade padlocks with removable cylinders can often match as well. Cheap laminated padlocks and some gate hardware can't be rekeyed and would need replacing. If you rent the casita out, we'd recommend keeping it on a separate key.
How do I figure out how many locks need rekeying?
Count keyholes, not doors. Front doors usually have two, a deadbolt and a knob or handleset. The garage-to-house door often has two more. Add back doors, side doors, keyed sliders, gate latches, padlocks on sheds and any casita. Text us photos if you're unsure and we'll help you build the list before the home lock rekey is quoted.
Does a home lock rekey change my garage opener or keypad codes?
No. A rekey changes mechanical keys only. Garage remotes, keypad entry codes and smart lock user codes are separate, and you should reset them the same day. Most garage openers let you erase all paired remotes using the learn button, and smart lock apps let you delete users. We're happy to walk you through it while we're at your Romoland home.
What do you need to see before rekeying my home?
A photo ID that shows the property address, or ID plus a utility bill, property tax bill or mortgage statement in your name. If the house is held in a trust or belongs to a relative, bring paperwork showing you can authorize the work. Renters need the landlord's approval in writing. These checks protect you and are part of working under our California license, LCO7891.
How far is Romoland from your base?
Romoland is about 37 miles from our San Bernardino base, roughly 42 minutes in light traffic. Arrival time depends on traffic and on the job the technician is finishing, so we give you an estimate on the phone before you commit.
