2025 Volvo EX90 Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2025 Volvo EX90 uses a phone-as-key system and a key card. New keys for it generally come from the Volvo dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2025 Volvo EX90, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Volvo. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

On the EX90, the Volvo Cars app turns a paired smartphone into the main key, so the car opens as you walk up and is ready to drive when you sit down and press the brake. The backup is an NFC key card that you hold to the door handle and set on the pad in the console, and Volvo sells an optional rechargeable key tag that unlocks the car as you approach. Each method is registered to the car, and removing one from the car's list disables it. If you buy a used EX90, make sure the previous owner's phone key has been removed and you receive every card and tag.
What's specific to the 2025 EX90
2025 was the first model year of the EX90 SPA2 (first generation). Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2025 Volvo EX90 we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything.
At 1 year old, a 2025 Volvo EX90 is usually still on its original keys. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.
Key options for the 2025 Volvo EX90
- Phone as key. Phone keys fail in ordinary ways: a dead battery, an app that logs you out after an update, Bluetooth switched off, or a new phone that hasn't been set up yet. That's why every vehicle with a phone key, including a Volvo EX90, should have a working physical backup, whether that's a key card, a fob or a keypad code. Some phones keep a power reserve that lets the wallet key work for a while after the screen goes dark, but don't count on it in a parking garage. Where your platform allows a locksmith to program a backup fob or card, we can do that on-site; where it doesn't, we'll explain the dealer path.
- Key card. A key card is a thin, battery-free card that works by NFC, the same short-range technology behind tap-to-pay. On a 2025 Volvo EX90 that uses one, you tap the card on a reader, typically on the door pillar or near the handle, to lock or open the car, then place it on a marked spot on the console to drive. Because it has no battery, it doesn't go dead the way a fob does, which makes it an excellent backup to a phone key. The trade-off is range: the card only works within a few centimeters of the reader, so it has to be presented deliberately rather than left in a pocket.
How the Volvo immobilizer works on the EX90
Volvo key systems follow the platform under the car more closely than the badge on the trunk, so the platform tells us most of what a job involves. The 2000 S70, V70 and C70 and the Dutch-built S40 and V40 used a transponder in the key head, a separate immobilizer unit, and metal blades cut on Volvo's internal-track profiles. The P2 cars, starting with the S80 and including the 2001-2009 S60, the 2001-2007 V70 and XC70 and the 2003-2014 XC90, moved key data into the Central Electronic Module (CEM), which shares it with the engine computer over the car's network. The smaller P1 models, meaning the second S40, the V50, the C30 and the second C70, replaced the key with a fob that slides into the ignition and turns, with a push-button version on Keyless Drive cars. The larger P3 cars from 2007 took it further: the fob drops into a dash slot and you press START, or stays in your pocket with Keyless Drive. From the 2016 XC90, SPA vehicles use proximity fobs with AES-encrypted transponders and a console start knob, and the gas XC40 that followed in 2019 uses the same style of fob. Volvo's newest electric models add phone keys and key cards.
- US EX90 production takes place at Volvo's Ridgeville, South Carolina plant, where it began in 2024.
- Because the phone acts as the key, a dead phone battery means falling back on the key card or key tag.
- The EX90 is the first Volvo built on the SPA2 architecture.
Getting a 2025 EX90 key from the dealer
EX90 keys are tied to the vehicle's central computer and Volvo's online systems, and phone keys are managed in the app by the owner. Replacement key cards and key tags come from a Volvo retailer, which handles registration. We do not program these SUVs, but we can help with a lockout, coordinate a dealer visit, and explain what documents to bring so the appointment goes smoothly.
Keys, cards and phone keys are managed by Volvo; we can help with lockouts and planning.
How we help when the key must come from Volvo
Losing every key to a Volvo is solvable on most older models, and the method depends on the platform. On P1 and P2 cars, we pick or decode a door lock to cut a blade, read the CEM PIN, and program new keys, normally at least two, so a lost key can no longer start the car. P3 cars from 2007 to 2018 often need the CEM removed and read on the bench before new fobs can be registered, and some late examples end up at the dealer. On SPA vehicles from 2016 on, some 2016-2021 cars can be done the same bench way, but newer ones, and the electric EX30, EX40 and EX90, usually mean a dealer key ordered by VIN. Even then, we can get you into the car, cut the emergency blade where there is one, and help coordinate. Expect us to check ID and proof of ownership before any work begins.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Volvo dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2025 EX90 needs a dealer key
On the 2025 EX90, the immobilizer and the keyless system trust only keys that Volvo's own system has authorized for that VIN. Programming happens through a secure online connection, and the key itself is usually ordered with the car's security data already written to it. Independent locksmith equipment is very capable on most vehicles, but on dealer-only generations like this one the honest answer is that the factory has to be involved. Being upfront about that saves you the cost of a wasted service call.
What to bring to the dealer
Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.
While you wait for the new key
Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.
What affects the dealer's price for an EX90 key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2025 EX90, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
Common Volvo key problems
- On the fob-style keys of the 2005-2013 S40, V50, C30 and C70, a dead battery only stops the buttons. The transponder still starts the car once the fob is inserted, and the hidden emergency blade opens the driver's door.
- Remote starters installed on CEM-based Volvos need a proper immobilizer interface. Installs that hide a spare key behind the dash weaken the car's security and can cause intermittent no-start faults that are hard to trace later.
- P3 fobs from 2007 to 2018 run on a CR2430 cell. When it weakens, Keyless Drive and the remote buttons fail first, but pushing the fob fully into the dash slot usually still starts the car because the slot reads the transponder directly.
- On 2001-2007 P2 cars, the CEM itself can fail, with cracked solder joints or failing internal relays causing a no-crank or odd electrical faults. It can look like a bad key, but no new key will help until the module is repaired.
- The internal-cut blades on 2000-2014 Volvos wear at the tip and along the track, and a worn key can bind in the ignition or door. Cutting a fresh blade from the key code or the decoded lock fixes it; copying the worn key copies the wear.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Be careful with discount fobs from online marketplaces. A listing may match your remote's shape while using a different frequency, chip or FCC ID, and many used smart keys are locked to their original vehicle. If you already bought one, send us the listing or a photo before the visit so nobody pays for a programming attempt that can't work.
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
- Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2025 Volvo EX90?
New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Keys, cards and phone keys are managed by Volvo; we can help with lockouts and planning. The 2025 EX90 uses a phone-as-key system and a key card.
Is the 2025 Volvo EX90 push-to-start?
Yes, it starts with a button, but it doesn't use a conventional fob: the 2025 EX90 uses a phone-as-key system and a key card. Replacing access means adding a new credential to the car, which is why we confirm the setup from your VIN before quoting.
How long does a dealer key for a 2025 Volvo EX90 take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
