2025 Volvo EX30 Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2025 Volvo EX30 uses a phone-as-key system and a key card. New keys for it generally come from the Volvo dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2025 Volvo EX30, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Volvo. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The EX30 is built around a phone key and key cards rather than a traditional fob. Once set up in the Volvo Cars app, your phone lets the car open as you approach and lets you drive away. The thin key card is the backup: you hold it against the door handle to unlock, then set it on the pad in the center console before you drive. There is no start button at all; with a valid key in the car, you press the brake and select Drive. Losing your phone is not the same as losing the car, as long as a key card is still in hand.
What's specific to the 2025 EX30
2025 was the first model year of the EX30 SEA (first generation). Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2025 Volvo EX30 we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything.
At 1 year old, a 2025 Volvo EX30 is usually still on its original keys. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.
Key options for the 2025 Volvo EX30
- Phone as key. Phone keys fail in ordinary ways: a dead battery, an app that logs you out after an update, Bluetooth switched off, or a new phone that hasn't been set up yet. That's why every vehicle with a phone key, including a Volvo EX30, should have a working physical backup, whether that's a key card, a fob or a keypad code. Some phones keep a power reserve that lets the wallet key work for a while after the screen goes dark, but don't count on it in a parking garage. Where your platform allows a locksmith to program a backup fob or card, we can do that on-site; where it doesn't, we'll explain the dealer path.
- Key card. A key card is a thin, battery-free card that works by NFC, the same short-range technology behind tap-to-pay. On a 2025 Volvo EX30 that uses one, you tap the card on a reader, typically on the door pillar or near the handle, to lock or open the car, then place it on a marked spot on the console to drive. Because it has no battery, it doesn't go dead the way a fob does, which makes it an excellent backup to a phone key. The trade-off is range: the card only works within a few centimeters of the reader, so it has to be presented deliberately rather than left in a pocket.
How the Volvo immobilizer works on the EX30
Volvo key systems follow the platform under the car more closely than the badge on the trunk, so the platform tells us most of what a job involves. The 2000 S70, V70 and C70 and the Dutch-built S40 and V40 used a transponder in the key head, a separate immobilizer unit, and metal blades cut on Volvo's internal-track profiles. The P2 cars, starting with the S80 and including the 2001-2009 S60, the 2001-2007 V70 and XC70 and the 2003-2014 XC90, moved key data into the Central Electronic Module (CEM), which shares it with the engine computer over the car's network. The smaller P1 models, meaning the second S40, the V50, the C30 and the second C70, replaced the key with a fob that slides into the ignition and turns, with a push-button version on Keyless Drive cars. The larger P3 cars from 2007 took it further: the fob drops into a dash slot and you press START, or stays in your pocket with Keyless Drive. From the 2016 XC90, SPA vehicles use proximity fobs with AES-encrypted transponders and a console start knob, and the gas XC40 that followed in 2019 uses the same style of fob. Volvo's newest electric models add phone keys and key cards.
- The EX30 rides on Geely's SEA platform rather than Volvo's own SPA or CMA architectures.
- Volvo has said the EX30 will be discontinued in the US after the 2026 model year.
- A phone key depends on the phone's battery, so keeping a key card in your wallet avoids being stranded.
Getting a 2025 EX30 key from the dealer
EX30 keys are managed through Volvo's app and dealer systems rather than through the OBD-II port with locksmith equipment. Phone keys are added in the app using an existing key, and replacement key cards come from a Volvo retailer, which registers them to the car. We do not program these cars, and we will not pretend otherwise. We can still help with lockouts and talk you through your options before you head to the dealer.

How we help when the key must come from Volvo
Losing every key to a Volvo is solvable on most older models, and the method depends on the platform. On P1 and P2 cars, we pick or decode a door lock to cut a blade, read the CEM PIN, and program new keys, normally at least two, so a lost key can no longer start the car. P3 cars from 2007 to 2018 often need the CEM removed and read on the bench before new fobs can be registered, and some late examples end up at the dealer. On SPA vehicles from 2016 on, some 2016-2021 cars can be done the same bench way, but newer ones, and the electric EX30, EX40 and EX90, usually mean a dealer key ordered by VIN. Even then, we can get you into the car, cut the emergency blade where there is one, and help coordinate. Expect us to check ID and proof of ownership before any work begins.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Volvo dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2025 EX30 needs a dealer key
Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2025 EX30 is one of them. Volvo generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Volvo models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.
What to bring to the dealer
Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.
While you wait for the new key
Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.
What affects the dealer's price for an EX30 key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2025 EX30, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
Common Volvo key problems
- The internal-cut blades on 2000-2014 Volvos wear at the tip and along the track, and a worn key can bind in the ignition or door. Cutting a fresh blade from the key code or the decoded lock fixes it; copying the worn key copies the wear.
- On SPA vehicles such as the 2016-and-later XC90, XC60 and S90, a fob too weak for keyless starting can still start the car when placed in the backup reader position in the center console, as shown in the owner's manual.
- Inland Empire heat shortens coin-cell life in every Volvo fob. Most newer Volvos show a low remote-key battery message on the dash, and replacing the cell when it appears beats having the fob quit in a parking lot.
- Replacement fobs bought online must match the original's FCC ID and frequency. Volvo used 315 MHz, 433 MHz and 902 MHz versions of some fobs, and a mismatched remote may never operate the locks even if it looks identical.
- On the fob-style keys of the 2005-2013 S40, V50, C30 and C70, a dead battery only stops the buttons. The transponder still starts the car once the fob is inserted, and the hidden emergency blade opens the driver's door.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- When a key's head cracks or its blade bends, replace it before it fails. A transponder chip can slip out of a split head, and a bent blade can break off inside the ignition or door lock, turning a simple key replacement into an extraction and repair job. Small symptoms are the inexpensive time to act.
- Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
- Be careful with discount fobs from online marketplaces. A listing may match your remote's shape while using a different frequency, chip or FCC ID, and many used smart keys are locked to their original vehicle. If you already bought one, send us the listing or a photo before the visit so nobody pays for a programming attempt that can't work.
Proof of ownership
Not every situation fits the simple case, so here's how we handle the common exceptions. For a leased or financed vehicle, a registration that lists you as the registered owner or lessee works with your ID. If you just bought the car, bring the signed title or bill of sale along with your ID. For a company or fleet vehicle, we need written authorization from the business plus the driver's ID. If the car belongs to a family member, the registered owner should be present or provide signed permission and a copy of their ID. Rental vehicles go through the rental company.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2025 Volvo EX30?
New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Phone keys and key cards are handled through Volvo; we can assist with lockouts and advice. The 2025 EX30 uses a phone-as-key system and a key card.
Is the 2025 Volvo EX30 push-to-start?
Yes, it starts with a button, but it doesn't use a conventional fob: the 2025 EX30 uses a phone-as-key system and a key card. Replacing access means adding a new credential to the car, which is why we confirm the setup from your VIN before quoting.
How long does a dealer key for a 2025 Volvo EX30 take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
