2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Volkswagen dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Volkswagen. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.
2022 ID.4 key specs
| Generation | MEB (first generation), 2021–2026 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Locksmith support | Dealer key required |
ID.4s come with keyless fobs that let you lock, open and drive the vehicle without inserting anything. There is no ignition key to turn: the vehicle readies itself when you sit down with the key in the cabin and press the brake. A mechanical emergency key stored in the fob opens the driver's door if the fob or the 12-volt battery dies. Match replacement fobs by VIN, since part numbers vary over the run.
What's specific to the 2022 ID.4
The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 is the second of 6 model years in the ID.4 MEB (first generation) (2021–2026), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source.
A 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 is about 4 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Key options for the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
How the Volkswagen immobilizer works on the ID.4
Nearly every Volkswagen sold in the US since 2000 has a transponder immobilizer, but the hardware behind the key changed with each platform. The Mk4 Golf, GTI, Jetta and New Beetle, and the Passat from 2002, read a Megamos ID48 chip in an HU66 key, usually a flip key, with the immobilizer built into the instrument cluster. Many 2000-2001 Passats were built without a factory immobilizer, while the last Cabrios and the EuroVan use an older system with a separate control module. The Mk5 cars that began with the 2005.5 Jetta kept the ID48 chip but moved to a cluster on the CAN network, a layout that carried through the Mk6 Golf, Jetta and Beetle. Most 2006-2010 Passats and the CC went their own way with a bladeless fob that slides into the dash. The Touareg used keys related to the Porsche Cayenne's, and the Routan minivan used Chrysler's Fobik. From the 2015 Golf onward, MQB cars guard key data in the cluster far more tightly, and the newest platforms, including the ID.4, ID. Buzz, Mk8 GTI and Golf R, the 2024-and-later Atlas and the 2025 Tiguan, depend on dealer equipment and Volkswagen's online systems. US Volkswagen remotes run at 315 MHz, apart from the Routan's 433 MHz Fobik.
- Chattanooga began building the ID.4 on July 26, 2022, and Volkswagen ended production there in mid-April 2026.
- The 2021 and 2022 ID.4s sold in North America were built in Zwickau or Emden, Germany.
- The fob holds a mechanical emergency key for the driver's door, which matters when the 12-volt battery is flat and the fob can't open the vehicle.
Getting a 2022 ID.4 key from the dealer
The ID.4 is built on Volkswagen's MEB platform, where keys are registered online through Volkswagen's systems. In practice, a new fob is ordered by VIN from a dealer and coded to the vehicle there. We don't program ID.4 fobs. We can open the vehicle if a fob is locked inside, check a fob that stopped working, and help you get the dealer visit lined up with your ownership documents ready.
ID.4 keys are dealer-only for now; we help with lockouts and with checking fobs and batteries, and we coordinate the dealer visit.
How we help when the key must come from Volkswagen
Losing every key is a bigger job on a Volkswagen than adding a spare, but on most cars from 2000 through the mid-2010s it can still be handled where the car is parked. We decode the driver's door lock to cut a new blade, read the immobilizer data from the cluster through the OBD-II port or on the bench, and program fresh keys, which also stops the lost ones from starting the car. Slot-start and keyless models may need their entry-and-start module removed and read. On MQB cars, all-keys-lost often means pulling the instrument cluster, and some builds still need a dealer key. MQB Evo cars, the 2024-and-later Atlas family and the ID models go to the dealer, sometimes on a tow truck. We confirm ownership with your ID and registration or title first, and we tell you which route your VIN points to before any work begins.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Volkswagen dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2022 ID.4 needs a dealer key
On the 2022 ID.4, the immobilizer and the keyless system trust only keys that Volkswagen's own system has authorized for that VIN. Programming happens through a secure online connection, and the key itself is usually ordered with the car's security data already written to it. Independent locksmith equipment is very capable on most vehicles, but on dealer-only generations like this one the honest answer is that the factory has to be involved. Being upfront about that saves you the cost of a wasted service call.
What to bring to the dealer
Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.
While you wait for the new key
While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.
What affects the dealer's price for an ID.4 key
Expect the dealer's quote to include the key itself, a programming or setup charge, and sometimes a separate charge for cutting an emergency blade. If every key is lost, add the cost of getting the car to the dealership. Comparing two dealers is worth a phone call; programming charges vary more than the price of the key.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2022 ID.4, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
ID.4 key battery
Most fobs for a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 open along a small slot in the seam; a coin or a plastic pry tool works better than a screwdriver, which chews up the housing. If the fob hides a mechanical blade, slide it out first, since the case often opens from that gap. Note which side of the old cell faces up, swap in a fresh replacement, and press the halves together until they click all the way around. Handle the new battery by its edges, because skin oil on the faces can hurt contact. In most cases the fob keeps its programming through a battery change, so test lock, unlock and start, and you're done.
Common Volkswagen key problems
- Keys sold online are often European versions running at 433 or 434 MHz. Even when the chip programs, the buttons will never work on a US Volkswagen, which uses 315 MHz remotes. The Routan, with Chrysler's 433 MHz Fobik, is the exception.
- When the fob battery dies on a keyless-access Volkswagen, the transponder still works without power. Holding the key at the emergency-start spot your owner's manual shows, near the steering column on many models, usually lets the car start.
- Flip keys from the 2000s and early 2010s wear at the pivot, so the blade flops or won't lock open. The remote board and transponder usually survive, and moving them into a new shell with a freshly cut HU66 blade often avoids reprogramming.
- A Routan Fobik that won't turn, sticks in the dash or isn't detected often points to the Wireless Ignition Node rather than the fob. We test the fob and the ignition node before suggesting a replacement.
- Many newer Volkswagens hide the driver's lock cylinder under a cap on the door handle, and after years without use it can seize. Turning it with the emergency blade now and then keeps it ready for a dead 12-volt battery.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
- Photograph the back of your fob and any key tag that came with the car. The FCC ID, part number and key code printed there make ordering a replacement faster and more accurate. Store the photos somewhere you can reach from any device, not only on the phone that might go missing along with the keys.
- If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4?
New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. ID.4 keys are dealer-only for now; we help with lockouts and with checking fobs and batteries, and we coordinate the dealer visit. The 2022 ID.4 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 push-to-start?
Yes. The 2022 ID.4 uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.
How long does a dealer key for a 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
