2009 Tesla Roadster Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2009 Tesla Roadster uses a remote head key and a basic mechanical key. New keys for it generally come from the Tesla dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

2009 Tesla Roadster Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2009 Tesla Roadster, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Tesla. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

Tesla's 2008 owner's manual covers these early cars, usually called the Roadster 1.5. Later Roadster manuals and Tesla's service documents show the layout that carried through the whole run: key fobs with a built-in transmitter and Lock, Unlock and programmable buttons, a plain key for the emergency door lock, and a starter switch with OFF, ACC and ON positions. Pressing Unlock disarms the alarm. The 2008 manual's key section lists the exact set of keys supplied, so check it against what came with your car.

What's specific to the 2009 Roadster

2009 was the final model year of the Roadster 1.5, before the 2.0 and 2.5 arrived for 2010. Late-run cars occasionally pick up running changes, so we check the VIN instead of assuming a 2009 Tesla Roadster matches a 2008.

A 2009 Tesla Roadster is about 17 years old. Original keys are often worn smooth, and some factory remotes for cars this age are discontinued, so we may suggest a quality aftermarket remote or a separate fob. Because older immobilizers are simpler, all-keys-lost jobs on cars this age are usually more straightforward than on late models.

Key options for the 2009 Tesla Roadster

  • Remote head key. Remote-head keys look similar across many vehicles, but the electronics inside are not interchangeable. Getting the right one for a Tesla Roadster means matching the FCC ID and part number printed on the back or inside the case, the operating frequency, which is commonly 315 MHz on US-market cars, the transponder type, and the button layout. A trim with remote start or a power liftgate may use a four- or five-button version where a base trim uses three. We check those details against your VIN and your existing key, if you have one, before cutting the blade. A wrong match can look perfect and still refuse to program.
  • Basic mechanical key. A plain mechanical key has no chip and no electronics, just a cut blade that lines up the wafers inside the lock. If your 2009 Tesla Roadster uses one, replacement is mostly a cutting job, but how it's cut matters. Copying a worn key copies its wear, and a duplicate of a duplicate drifts further from spec each time. We prefer to cut by code: we look up or decode the factory bitting, then cut a fresh key to the original depths on a code machine. The result turns smoothly in the doors and ignition instead of needing a jiggle. If the ignition wafers themselves are already worn, we'll point that out too.

How the Tesla immobilizer works on the Roadster

Tesla is the odd one out among the makes we cover, and it helps to know why before you call. The 2008-2011 Roadster is the only Tesla with a metal key. The key turns a starter switch, and the radio fobs built into the keys lock the doors, arm the alarm and disarm it again on Unlock. The 2012-2020 Model S and 2016-2020 Model X brought Tesla's car-shaped fobs, which open the car as you walk up and let it drive once you press the brake. In 2018, KU Leuven researchers showed that early Model S fobs, built around a Texas Instruments transponder running the 40-bit DST40 cipher, could be cloned in seconds. Tesla fitted a newer fob to cars built from June 2018 and added PIN to Drive. The 2017 Model 3 introduced the system every current Tesla uses: your phone acts as a Bluetooth key, RFID key cards are the backup, and most models also offer an optional fob. The Model Y, the refreshed 2021 Model S and Model X, and the Cybertruck all follow it. Each key lives in the car's own key list, added only with a key the car already trusts or through the owner's Tesla account.

  • NHTSA recall 09V178 covered 345 model-year 2008 Roadsters built from March 2008 through April 22, 2009, which shows how long the 2008 model year ran.
  • Tesla began production of its 2010 model-year Roadster in July 2009, so cars built in the first half of 2009 show up as 2008 in recall records and as 2009 in many listings.

Getting a 2009 Roadster key from the dealer

Tesla's Roadster manuals tell you to contact Tesla for a replacement if a key is lost, and we don't have an aftermarket route into this car's key system. That is our advice too. If you still have a working key, we can talk through whether the metal portion can be duplicated for the doors and starter switch, with the clear understanding that only Tesla supplies a working fob for the remote locking and alarm.

Replacement Roadster fobs come from Tesla; we can help with lockouts, duplicating the plain key and coordinating with Tesla.

How we help when the key must come from Tesla

Losing every key to a Tesla is less of a crisis than on most cars, provided you can still sign in to the Tesla account the car belongs to. From the app you can open the car and enable keyless driving over the cellular connection, order key cards from Tesla, and pair one through Security & Drivers > Add Key Card while you sit inside. If the car was never transferred to your account after a private sale, or the app can't reach it in a dead zone, Tesla Service is the route. Fobs for the 2012-2020 Model S and 2016-2020 Model X also go through Tesla. A Roadster with no working fob can still be started with its key and the security PIN, but a replacement fob has to come from Tesla. We can't originate Tesla keys, but we can help you figure out which path applies before you lose a day to the wrong one.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Tesla dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2009 Roadster needs a dealer key

On the 2009 Roadster, the immobilizer and the keyless system trust only keys that Tesla's own system has authorized for that VIN. Programming happens through a secure online connection, and the key itself is usually ordered with the car's security data already written to it. Independent locksmith equipment is very capable on most vehicles, but on dealer-only generations like this one the honest answer is that the factory has to be involved. Being upfront about that saves you the cost of a wasted service call.

What to bring to the dealer

Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.

While you wait for the new key

While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.

What affects the dealer's price for a Roadster key

Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2009 Roadster, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

Roadster key battery

If a new replacement doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.

Common Tesla key problems

  • PIN to Drive asks for a four-digit code before the car can be driven. Tesla added it after the 2018 Model S fob cloning research, and it is a sensible extra layer against cloning and relay attacks on phone keys and fobs alike.
  • Leasing a Tesla? Tesla's manual says a leased car needs the leasing company to add or remove keys, so call the lessor before you order spare cards or a fob, and keep your lease paperwork handy for the conversation.
  • Tesla fobs use three different coin cells: CR2032 in the 2012-2020 Model S and the Model 3 and Model Y accessory fob, CR2330 in the refreshed Model S fob, and CR2354 in every Model X fob. Read the old cell before buying.
  • A 2012-2020 Model S with a dead fob battery can still be opened: hold the fob near the base of the passenger-side wiper and press the door handle, then set it against the console just below the low-voltage outlet and press the brake to drive.
  • A phone key drops out far more often than a card fails. Bluetooth turned off, location access not set to Always, a logged-out Tesla app or a flat phone battery will all leave you at the door, which is why Tesla tells you to carry a key card.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
  • Photograph the back of your fob and any key tag that came with the car. The FCC ID, part number and key code printed there make ordering a replacement faster and more accurate. Store the photos somewhere you can reach from any device, not only on the phone that might go missing along with the keys.
  • On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.

Proof of ownership

Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith make a key for a 2009 Tesla Roadster?

New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Replacement Roadster fobs come from Tesla; we can help with lockouts, duplicating the plain key and coordinating with Tesla. The 2009 Roadster uses a remote head key and a basic mechanical key.

Is the 2009 Tesla Roadster push-to-start?

No. The 2009 Roadster uses a turn-key ignition, so the key is cut to match the ignition and doors and then programmed to the immobilizer.

How long does a dealer key for a 2009 Tesla Roadster take?

It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
