2020 Tesla Model S Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2020 Tesla Model S uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Tesla dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2020 Tesla Model S, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Tesla. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

Every 2012-2020 Model S uses the car-shaped fob. Press the roof once to lock or twice to unlock, and double-press the front or rear of the fob to open the frunk or trunk. There is no start button: with the fob inside, pressing the brake readies the car to drive. The door handles present themselves as you approach with the fob when passive entry is on. Cars built from June 2018 onward received a newer fob with stronger encryption, while the earlier fob, made by Pektron around a Texas Instruments transponder, is the one researchers cloned.
What's specific to the 2020 Model S
2020 was the final model year of the Model S Legacy Model S (pre-refresh), before the Refreshed Model S (2021 update) arrived for 2021. Late-run cars occasionally pick up running changes, so we check the VIN instead of assuming a 2020 Tesla Model S matches a 2012. A 2020 Tesla Model S is about 6 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Smart-key cars like the 2020 Model S can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.
Key options for the 2020 Tesla Model S
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Proximity keys bring a security trade-off worth understanding. Because the fob is always listening, thieves with relay equipment can stretch its signal from inside your house to the car in the driveway. Keeping the fob away from exterior walls, or in a signal-blocking pouch, closes that gap, and some fobs offer a sleep mode described in the owner's manual. If a smart key for your 2020 Tesla Model S is lost or stolen, programming a replacement is the moment to delete the missing fob from the car's memory. And be wary of used fobs from online sellers: a lot of them are locked to the vehicle they came from and can't be reprogrammed to yours.
How the Tesla immobilizer works on the Model S
Tesla is the odd one out among the makes we cover, and it helps to know why before you call. The 2008-2011 Roadster is the only Tesla with a metal key. The key turns a starter switch, and the radio fobs built into the keys lock the doors, arm the alarm and disarm it again on Unlock. The 2012-2020 Model S and 2016-2020 Model X brought Tesla's car-shaped fobs, which open the car as you walk up and let it drive once you press the brake. In 2018, KU Leuven researchers showed that early Model S fobs, built around a Texas Instruments transponder running the 40-bit DST40 cipher, could be cloned in seconds. Tesla fitted a newer fob to cars built from June 2018 and added PIN to Drive. The 2017 Model 3 introduced the system every current Tesla uses: your phone acts as a Bluetooth key, RFID key cards are the backup, and most models also offer an optional fob. The Model Y, the refreshed 2021 Model S and Model X, and the Cybertruck all follow it. Each key lives in the car's own key list, added only with a key the car already trusts or through the owner's Tesla account.
- KU Leuven researchers showed in 2018 that fobs using the DST40 cipher could be cloned in seconds; Model S cars built from June 2018 onward use a newer fob.
- Owners can turn on PIN to Drive, which asks for a code before driving, and can switch off passive entry so the fob must be used to unlock.
- A fob with a dead battery can still open the car when held near the base of the passenger-side windshield wiper.
- Tesla recommends Panasonic CR2032 cells and suggests replacing the battery in all of your fobs at the same time.
Getting a 2020 Model S key from the dealer
Tesla documents an owner routine under Controls > Service > Key Fob Pairing that needs an already paired fob or Remote Access through the app, takes up to three keys, and warns that keys not paired during the session may stop working. Otherwise Tesla Service pairs fobs with its Toolbox software, and Tesla restricts security-related Toolbox actions to its own staff and authorized third parties. We don't program these fobs, but we can replace the battery and help you plan the service visit.
New 2012-2020 Model S fobs come from Tesla and are paired in the car or by Tesla Service; we can replace fob batteries and help you plan the visit.
How we help when the key must come from Tesla
Losing every key to a Tesla is less of a crisis than on most cars, provided you can still sign in to the Tesla account the car belongs to. From the app you can open the car and enable keyless driving over the cellular connection, order key cards from Tesla, and pair one through Security & Drivers > Add Key Card while you sit inside. If the car was never transferred to your account after a private sale, or the app can't reach it in a dead zone, Tesla Service is the route. Fobs for the 2012-2020 Model S and 2016-2020 Model X also go through Tesla. A Roadster with no working fob can still be started with its key and the security PIN, but a replacement fob has to come from Tesla. We can't originate Tesla keys, but we can help you figure out which path applies before you lose a day to the wrong one.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Tesla dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2020 Model S needs a dealer key
On the 2020 Model S, the immobilizer and the keyless system trust only keys that Tesla's own system has authorized for that VIN. Programming happens through a secure online connection, and the key itself is usually ordered with the car's security data already written to it. Independent locksmith equipment is very capable on most vehicles, but on dealer-only generations like this one the honest answer is that the factory has to be involved. Being upfront about that saves you the cost of a wasted service call.
What to bring to the dealer
Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.
While you wait for the new key
Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.
What affects the dealer's price for a Model S key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2020 Model S, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
Model S key battery
Most fobs for a 2020 Tesla Model S open along a small slot in the seam; a coin or a plastic pry tool works better than a screwdriver, which chews up the housing. If the fob hides a mechanical blade, slide it out first, since the case often opens from that gap. Note which side of the old cell faces up, swap in a fresh CR2032, and press the halves together until they click all the way around. Handle the new battery by its edges, because skin oil on the faces can hurt contact. In most cases the fob keeps its programming through a battery change, so test lock, unlock and start, and you're done.
Common Tesla key problems
- A 2012-2020 Model S with a dead fob battery can still be opened: hold the fob near the base of the passenger-side wiper and press the door handle, then set it against the console just below the low-voltage outlet and press the brake to drive.
- Tesla fobs use three different coin cells: CR2032 in the 2012-2020 Model S and the Model 3 and Model Y accessory fob, CR2330 in the refreshed Model S fob, and CR2354 in every Model X fob. Read the old cell before buying.
- A phone key drops out far more often than a card fails. Bluetooth turned off, location access not set to Always, a logged-out Tesla app or a flat phone battery will all leave you at the door, which is why Tesla tells you to carry a key card.
- Buying a used Tesla? Open Controls > Locks and read the key list. A seller's phone key or spare card can stay enrolled after the sale, so delete anything you don't recognize. Each deletion has to be confirmed by scanning a key the car already trusts.
- A 2012-2020 Model S holds only three keys, and Tesla warns that any key not present during pairing may stop working. Bring every fob you want to keep, whether you pair at the touchscreen or at Tesla Service.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
- If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
- Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
- Photograph the back of your fob and any key tag that came with the car. The FCC ID, part number and key code printed there make ordering a replacement faster and more accurate. Store the photos somewhere you can reach from any device, not only on the phone that might go missing along with the keys.
- Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
Proof of ownership
Not every situation fits the simple case, so here's how we handle the common exceptions. For a leased or financed vehicle, a registration that lists you as the registered owner or lessee works with your ID. If you just bought the car, bring the signed title or bill of sale along with your ID. For a company or fleet vehicle, we need written authorization from the business plus the driver's ID. If the car belongs to a family member, the registered owner should be present or provide signed permission and a copy of their ID. Rental vehicles go through the rental company.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2020 Tesla Model S?
New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. New 2012-2020 Model S fobs come from Tesla and are paired in the car or by Tesla Service; we can replace fob batteries and help you plan the visit. The 2020 Model S uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.
Is the 2020 Tesla Model S push-to-start?
Yes. The 2020 Model S uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.
What battery does a 2020 Tesla Model S key use?
Fobs for the 2020 Model S use a CR2032 coin cell. Replace it when range drops or the car shows a key-battery warning. If the fob still fails with a fresh battery, the board, buttons or programming may be the problem, which we can test on site.
How long does a dealer key for a 2020 Tesla Model S take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
