2000 Saturn S-Series Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2000 Saturn S-Series belongs to the S-Series Third generation and uses a basic mechanical key and a key with a separate remote fob. We can originate, cut and program keys for this vehicle on site, including when every key is lost. Julian's Locksmith cuts S-Series keys on site; call (951) 903-3193 with your VIN for a quote.

A 2000 Saturn S-Series key is more than a piece of cut metal. Depending on the trim, it carries a transponder chip that talks to the immobilizer, a remote that operates the door locks, or a proximity fob that lets the engine start with a push of a button. Each piece has to be matched and programmed, not just copied. Julian's Locksmith handles that work on-site in Southern California and the surrounding parts of the Inland Empire: we identify the exact key by VIN and part number, cut the blade by code, and pair the electronics through the car's diagnostic port. Below, you'll find the key types used on the S-Series, what replacement involves, and what affects the cost.

Each 2000-2002 S-Series starts with an all-metal key that carries no transponder; the security check happens inside the ignition lock cylinder. The same key works the doors, ignition and trunk or liftgate. Keyless entry, where fitted, is a separate four-button remote that also arms the factory security system. SW wagons use the same key and remote as the sedans through their final 2001 model year, and SC coupes share them as well, so one key profile covers the whole line.
What's specific to the 2000 S-Series
2000 was the first model year of the S-Series Third generation. Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2000 Saturn S-Series we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything.
A 2000 Saturn S-Series is about 26 years old. Original keys are often worn smooth, and some factory remotes for cars this age are discontinued, so we may suggest a quality aftermarket remote or a separate fob.
Key options for the 2000 Saturn S-Series
- Basic mechanical key. Before treating a Saturn S-Series key as purely mechanical, we confirm it. Some keys look like plain metal with a rubber or plastic head yet hide a transponder inside, and immobilizers arrived on different trims and model years at different times. If yours truly has no chip, the new key is cut and then tested in the doors, ignition, glove box and trunk where those locks exist. Mechanical blades also show up on newer vehicles as valet keys and as the emergency insert tucked inside a smart fob. Those blades still matter: they're how you get in when a fob battery dies, so they deserve the same careful cutting.
- Key with separate remote fob. Some Saturn S-Series owners carry two pieces: a transponder key for the ignition and a separate remote fob on the same ring. Because they work independently, you only have to replace what's actually missing or broken. A lost remote still leaves you with a key that opens the doors and starts the engine, so it's an inconvenience rather than an emergency. A lost key is the more urgent half, since it has to be cut and its chip programmed before the car will run. We stock and program both sides, and if the whole ring is gone, we handle the key first and then pair a new remote.
How S-Series keys work on this generation
- Remotes with FCC ID L2C0005T fit 2000-2002 SL and SC models and 2000-2001 SW wagons.
- The Ilco B96 blank used here also fits the L-Series and the 2002-2007 Vue.
- Remote starters on these cars need a Passlock interface module, because the theft check runs through the ignition cylinder rather than a chip.
Cutting a 2000 S-Series key
There is nothing to program in the key itself. We cut a new key from the key code or by decoding a door or ignition lock, and once it turns the cylinder, the engine starts. If the ignition cylinder or Passlock sensor is replaced, the car needs GM's timed relearn, which we run at the car. A replacement remote pairs with the body module as a separate step, usually with a scan tool. All-keys-lost is a cutting job, not a programming one.
Lost every key to your S-Series?
Losing every key to a Saturn rarely means a trip to the dealer. On a Passlock model we generate a key from the key code or by decoding a door or ignition lock, and once it turns the cylinder, the car starts; nothing needs programming. On the Relay and the Circle Plus models, the new key also has to be learned through the OBD-II port, and that all-keys-lost routine includes timed security waits that can add up to about half an hour. Any old key that turns up afterward may need to be learned again. The Astra is the hardest case: we decode the lock to cut its HU100 blade, but the immobilizer needs the security code, and if our equipment cannot reach it for your car, a GM dealer has to finish the programming. Proof of ownership comes before any of this.
- Gather your documents and the VIN. Call with the year, make, model and VIN if you can read it through the windshield, plus where the car is parked. Those details let us confirm whether your Saturn S-Series can be done on-site and bring the right key, so the first trip is the only trip.
- Get into the vehicle without damage. Entry comes before key-making because we need access to the ignition, the OBD-II port and sometimes the documents in the glove box. We take care with weather stripping, door frames and paint, and we confirm the dash VIN matches your registration before going any further.
- Originate a new key from the car. With no key to copy, the cuts come from the vehicle itself. We retrieve the key code through manufacturer channels where possible, or decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool. Then we cut the blade on our code machine and confirm it turns the lock smoothly.
- Erase missing keys and add a spare. Once the car starts, we remove the lost keys from memory wherever the system allows, so they can't start the engine if someone finds them. Making a second key during the same visit costs much less than a repeat all-keys-lost call down the road.
Why a spare key pays for itself
- Two drivers sharing one key is a daily negotiation. A second key lets a partner, teenager or coworker use the vehicle without handing keys back and forth in parking lots, and it means one person losing their key ring doesn't leave the whole household stuck.
- When you sell or trade in the vehicle, buyers and dealers expect two keys. A missing key can come up during an appraisal or a private-sale negotiation, so having both on hand keeps the conversation about the car, not about what it will cost the next owner to replace one.
- A spare stored safely at home rescues you from a locked car with the fob sitting on the seat, a key dropped somewhere along a hiking trail, or a fob that stops responding on a busy morning. Keep it indoors, never in a magnetic box under the bumper.
Dealer or mobile locksmith?
The biggest difference between a dealership and a mobile locksmith is where the work happens. A dealer programs keys in its service bay, so if every key is lost, the car usually has to be towed there, and you work around the service department's schedule and the time it takes to order a key by VIN. Julian's Locksmith brings the cutting machine, key blanks and programming equipment to the car, whether it sits in your driveway, a workplace lot or a parking structure. For a 2000 Saturn S-Series we can program on-site, that means no tow and no shuttle rides back and forth. The trade-off is real, though: on vehicles where only the dealer can program keys, a tow or appointment may still be necessary, and we'll say so before you spend anything on our visit.
S-Series key battery
Most fobs for a 2000 Saturn S-Series open along a small slot in the seam; a coin or a plastic pry tool works better than a screwdriver, which chews up the housing. If the fob hides a mechanical blade, slide it out first, since the case often opens from that gap. Note which side of the old cell faces up, swap in a fresh CR2032, and press the halves together until they click all the way around. Handle the new battery by its edges, because skin oil on the faces can hurt contact. In most cases the fob keeps its programming through a battery change, so test lock, unlock and start, and you're done.
How the job works
- Verify ownership before any work. California holds licensed locksmiths responsible for knowing whose car they're making keys for. We record your name, the VIN and the plate on a work order. If you aren't the registered owner, you'll need the owner's written authorization along with your own photo ID before we begin.
- Get the key code or decode the lock. If you still have a working key, we can read its cuts directly and check them against the factory depths for the Saturn keyway. A worn key gets corrected back to spec during this step, so the new key turns crisply instead of reproducing years of wear in a fresh piece of metal.
- Test everything and clear out old keys. Before we leave, every function gets checked: doors, trunk or liftgate, panic button, remote range, engine start, and the emergency blade in the driver's door. If keys are missing, we delete them from the car's memory where the system allows, so a lost key can no longer start the engine.
What affects the price of an S-Series key
- Factory or aftermarket parts. Factory keys and fobs carry the manufacturer's part number and usually the highest parts cost. Quality aftermarket keys use compatible electronics at a lower price and work well on many vehicles. We tell you which options we trust for your car, and where an aftermarket version has known range or fit issues, we steer you to OEM.
- Blade style and cutting. Traditional edge-cut blades are quick to cut. High-security laser-cut blades, with a groove milled into the side, need a specialized machine and more care, and the blanks themselves cost more. If we have to decode a lock to find the cuts, that adds labor as well.
- Travel, timing and extra repairs. Because we come to you, the distance from our San Bernardino base and the time of the call play a part. So does anything we find along the way, such as a worn ignition cylinder or a seized door lock. You hear about each item and get a quote before we start work.
Call (951) 903-3193 with your VIN and the keys you still have, and we'll quote the job before any work starts.
Common Saturn key problems
- Several failed start attempts in a row put Passlock into a tamper mode that disables the engine for about 10 minutes. Leave the key alone until the Security light stops flashing, then try once more before calling it a failure.
- A flashing Security light with a no-start on an Ion, L-Series, S-Series or 2002-2007 Vue points to Passlock rather than the key. A new key will not cure it; the ignition cylinder, its sensor or a module needs diagnosis and a relearn.
- The 2003-2007 Ion and the 2007 Sky were added to GM's 2014 ignition switch recall, which warned that a heavy key ring could turn the switch out of RUN while driving. Keep the ring light and check your VIN for open recall work.
- The B96 keys used on the S-Series, L-Series and first-generation Vue are now more than twenty years into service, and copies of copies drift from factory depths. A fresh key cut by code often cures a sticky, hard-to-turn ignition.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
- On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
Proof of ownership
Not every situation fits the simple case, so here's how we handle the common exceptions. For a leased or financed vehicle, a registration that lists you as the registered owner or lessee works with your ID. If you just bought the car, bring the signed title or bill of sale along with your ID. For a company or fleet vehicle, we need written authorization from the business plus the driver's ID. If the car belongs to a family member, the registered owner should be present or provide signed permission and a copy of their ID. Rental vehicles go through the rental company.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2000 Saturn S-Series?
We can originate, cut and program keys for this vehicle on site, including when every key is lost. The 2000 S-Series uses a basic mechanical key and a key with a separate remote fob.
When can you come out to Southern California for a car key?
We work every day from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., weekends included. Weekends are included. Call (951) 903-3193 and we'll give you an honest ETA to Southern California based on where we are at the time. If you're stuck outside our hours, it's usually smarter to leave the car parked and locked, get home safely, and call when we open than to pay for an overnight tow.
Is an aftermarket key as good as a factory key for a Saturn S-Series?
For many vehicles, a quality aftermarket key works just like the original: it starts the car, operates the locks and fits the keyways. Differences tend to show up in housing durability, button feel and sometimes remote range. For certain smart keys, a factory fob is the more reliable choice. We'll tell you honestly which options we'd put on our own car for your S-Series and let you make the call.
Do you come to Southern California to make car keys, or do I bring the car to you?
We come to you. Julian's Locksmith is a mobile-only service, so the van drives to wherever the car is parked in Southern California: your driveway, an apartment lot, a workplace or a shopping center. That matters most when every key is lost, because it saves you a tow. Just make sure we'll have room to work beside the driver's door and that the vehicle is accessible when we arrive.
Is the 2000 Saturn S-Series push-to-start?
No. The 2000 S-Series uses a turn-key ignition, so the key is cut to match the ignition and doors.
What battery does a 2000 Saturn S-Series key use?
Fobs for the 2000 S-Series use a CR2032 coin cell. Replace it when range drops or the car shows a key-battery warning. If the fob still fails with a fresh battery, the board, buttons or programming may be the problem, which we can test on site.
