2007 Saturn Aura Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2007 Saturn Aura belongs to the Aura (Epsilon platform) and uses a transponder (chip) key and a key with a separate remote fob. Its immobilizer chip: Philips 46 (GM Circle Plus / PASS-Key III+). We can originate, cut and program keys for this vehicle on site, including when every key is lost. Julian's Locksmith cuts and programs Aura keys on site; call (951) 903-3193 with your VIN for a quote.

2007 Saturn Aura Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

Some vehicles are easy to make keys for. Others need special security access, a PIN code, or work that only a dealer can do. The Saturn Aura (Epsilon platform) has its own requirements, and we'd rather explain them on the phone than surprise you in your driveway. When you call Julian's Locksmith about a 2007 Aura, we ask for the VIN and which keys you still have, check the programming path for that platform, and give you a straight answer: we can do it on-site in Southern California, we can handle part of it, or the dealer is the right call. When it's a job we take, we bring everything needed to cut and program the key in one trip.

Every Aura starts with a transponder key carrying a Philips 46 Circle Plus chip in its plastic head. Remote keyless entry uses a separate fob, and remote start was available, which adds a button to the fob. XE, XR and Green Line models share the same key family, so replacement work depends on the fob's button layout rather than the trim. There is no proximity key or push-button start on any Aura, and every car has a conventional ignition cylinder.

What's specific to the 2007 Aura

2007 was the first model year of the Aura (Epsilon platform). Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2007 Saturn Aura we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything. A 2007 Saturn Aura is about 19 years old. Original keys are often worn smooth, and some factory remotes for cars this age are discontinued, so we may suggest a quality aftermarket remote or a separate fob. Because older immobilizers are simpler, all-keys-lost jobs on cars this age are usually more straightforward than on late models.

If a newly cut key turns the 2007 Aura's ignition but the engine cranks and dies, the transponder isn't recognized yet; that's a programming step, not a cutting problem, and it's handled at the car.

Key options for the 2007 Saturn Aura

  • Transponder (chip) key. There are two ways to give a new transponder key the right identity. Cloning reads the chip in a working key and writes that same ID onto a special cloneable chip, so the car can't tell the two apart. Programming adds a brand-new key ID to the immobilizer's memory through the OBD-II port, sometimes after entering a security PIN tied to the VIN. Cloning is handy when you have a working key and the chip family supports it. Programming is the better choice when keys are lost, because it also lets us remove keys you no longer control from the car's memory. For your Saturn Aura, we'll explain which method fits and why.
  • Key with separate remote fob. Separate remotes are easy to find online, which is exactly why they cause trouble. A listing can show the same shell as your Saturn Aura remote while hiding a different FCC ID, frequency or internal chip, and some used remotes are locked to the first vehicle they were paired with. We're glad to look at one you've already bought, and we'll tell you honestly whether it can be paired before charging you to try. If the remote side of your setup has become unreliable, it's also worth asking whether a fresh remote and a newly cut key, matched together, would cost less than chasing repairs on aging parts.

How the Saturn immobilizer works on the Aura

Saturn's 2000-2010 model years split into four security setups, and the nameplate plus the year tells us which one your car has. The 2000-2002 S-Series, the 2000-2005 L-Series, the 2002-2007 Vue and the 2003-2007 Ion all use GM's Passlock. The key carries no chip at all. Instead, a magnet and Hall-effect sensor in the ignition lock cylinder send a coded value to the body control module, and a mismatch cuts fuel and flashes the Security light. The 2005-2007 Relay minivan uses PASS-Key 3, with a transponder molded into the key head. Saturn's last GM-engineered models, the Aura, Sky, Outlook and 2008-2010 Vue, use PASS-Key 3+, better known as Circle Plus, built around a Philips 46 chip. The exception is the Belgian-built Astra, which carries Opel's own immobilizer with an ID46 chip inside a flip key and a security code behind it. Every Saturn of this era starts with a turned key; none offered push-button start. GM wound the brand down during 2009 and early 2010, so no Saturn newer than the 2010 model year exists.

  • The Aura shares its B111 transponder blank and Circle Plus system with the Malibu and G6 of the same years.
  • Green Line hybrids use the same key and immobilizer as gasoline Auras.
  • Fobs with a remote-start button must go on a car built with remote start to be useful.

Programming a 2007 Aura key

If one key still works, GM's on-board sequence teaches the car a new key with a short run of ignition cycles, and the original keeps working. When no key is left, we cut a blade by code or by decoding a lock and program its chip through the OBD-II port, using a routine with timed security waits. The remote is paired as a separate step once the key starts the car.

Lost every key to your Aura?

  1. Gather your documents and the VIN. Find your registration or title and a government photo ID in the same name. Note the VIN, which is printed on the driver's side of the dashboard and usually on your insurance card. If the paperwork is locked in the car, tell us; we'll open the vehicle first and check it there.
  2. Get into the vehicle without damage. Entry comes before key-making because we need access to the ignition, the OBD-II port and sometimes the documents in the glove box. We take care with weather stripping, door frames and paint, and we confirm the dash VIN matches your registration before going any further.
  3. Originate a new key from the car. With no key to copy, the cuts come from the vehicle itself. We retrieve the key code through manufacturer channels where possible, or decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool. Then we cut the blade on our code machine and confirm it turns the lock smoothly.
  4. Program the key to the immobilizer. All-keys-lost programming often takes longer than adding a key, because the car has no trusted key to authorize the change. We follow the procedure your Saturn Aura requires, then confirm the engine starts and keeps running and the remote or keyless functions respond.
  5. Erase missing keys and add a spare. Once the car starts, we remove the lost keys from memory wherever the system allows, so they can't start the engine if someone finds them. Making a second key during the same visit costs much less than a repeat all-keys-lost call down the road.

Why a spare key pays for itself

  • A spare stored safely at home rescues you from a locked car with the fob sitting on the seat, a key dropped somewhere along a hiking trail, or a fob that stops responding on a busy morning. Keep it indoors, never in a magnetic box under the bumper.
  • Two drivers sharing one key is a daily negotiation. A second key lets a partner, teenager or coworker use the vehicle without handing keys back and forth in parking lots, and it means one person losing their key ring doesn't leave the whole household stuck.
  • Some vehicles make it hard to add a key once you're down to one. Certain immobilizer systems let an owner program an extra key on-board only when two working keys are present, so a second key preserves the easy options for later and avoids a full reset.

Dealer or mobile locksmith?

Price and parts are the other half of the comparison. Dealers typically sell factory keys only and charge their posted service rates for programming. We offer factory keys where it matters and quality aftermarket alternatives where they perform well, and the quote covers cutting, programming and the trip, with nothing tacked on at the end. Timing differs too. Dealer service departments generally keep business hours, while we take automotive calls every day from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., which covers early commutes and late evenings. We're closed overnight, and we'll be upfront if your timing means the dealer or a next-day visit is the better plan. Neither option is wrong; the right one depends on your Aura and your schedule.

Aura key battery

If a new CR2032 doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.

How the job works

  1. Identify the exact key your Aura uses. Every job starts with the VIN, the trim and a look at any key you still have. From those we confirm the keyway, the transponder or smart-key chip, the remote frequency, the FCC ID and the button layout. Two Saturn Aura keys that look identical can carry different electronics, so this step keeps the wrong part from ever reaching the car.
  2. Verify ownership before any work. California holds licensed locksmiths responsible for knowing whose car they're making keys for. We record your name, the VIN and the plate on a work order. If you aren't the registered owner, you'll need the owner's written authorization along with your own photo ID before we begin.
  3. Get the key code or decode the lock. If you still have a working key, we can read its cuts directly and check them against the factory depths for the Saturn keyway. A worn key gets corrected back to spec during this step, so the new key turns crisply instead of reproducing years of wear in a fresh piece of metal.
  4. Cut the blade on-site. Cutting happens right beside your car. For a smart key, that means the emergency blade hidden inside the fob; for a transponder or remote-head key, it's the main blade you'll use every day. We deburr the cuts and check the fit in each lock so nothing binds or sticks later on.
  5. Program the chip, remote or smart key. Programming tells the car's computers that the new key belongs to the vehicle. Transponder chips are added to the immobilizer, remote buttons to the body control module, and proximity fobs to the keyless system. If a step requires dealer-only access on your Aura, you'll have heard that before we arrived, not halfway through the job.
  6. Test everything and clear out old keys. Before we leave, every function gets checked: doors, trunk or liftgate, panic button, remote range, engine start, and the emergency blade in the driver's door. If keys are missing, we delete them from the car's memory where the system allows, so a lost key can no longer start the engine.

What affects the price of an Aura key

  • Factory or aftermarket parts. Factory keys and fobs carry the manufacturer's part number and usually the highest parts cost. Quality aftermarket keys use compatible electronics at a lower price and work well on many vehicles. We tell you which options we trust for your car, and where an aftermarket version has known range or fit issues, we steer you to OEM.
  • All keys lost or adding a key. On some vehicles, losing the last key changes the programming entirely, from a quick add-key procedure to a full immobilizer reset or a module read on the bench. That extra labor shows up in the price, and it's the strongest argument for keeping a spare in the house.
  • Blade style and cutting. The blade still matters on keyless cars, because the emergency insert has to fit the door lock. Cutting by code is standard for us. Decoding a door lock when no key or code exists adds time, and so does progressing any cuts the door lock doesn't show.
  • Travel, timing and extra repairs. Because we come to you, the distance from our San Bernardino base and the time of the call play a part. So does anything we find along the way, such as a worn ignition cylinder or a seized door lock. You hear about each item and get a quote before we start work.

Call (951) 903-3193 with your VIN and the keys you still have, and we'll quote the job before any work starts.

Common Saturn key problems

  • Saturn used several unrelated remotes: L2C0005T on the late S-Series, LHJ009 on the L-Series and N5F250738 on the Ion. Read the FCC ID on the back of your old remote before ordering, because a look-alike will not pair.
  • Inland Empire heat drains the CR2032 cells in most Saturn remotes faster than mild climates do. If range shrinks before the buttons quit, replace the battery before assuming the remote or the car has failed.
  • The B96 keys used on the S-Series, L-Series and first-generation Vue are now more than twenty years into service, and copies of copies drift from factory depths. A fresh key cut by code often cures a sticky, hard-to-turn ignition.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
  • Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
  • Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.

Proof of ownership

Not every situation fits the simple case, so here's how we handle the common exceptions. For a leased or financed vehicle, a registration that lists you as the registered owner or lessee works with your ID. If you just bought the car, bring the signed title or bill of sale along with your ID. For a company or fleet vehicle, we need written authorization from the business plus the driver's ID. If the car belongs to a family member, the registered owner should be present or provide signed permission and a copy of their ID. Rental vehicles go through the rental company.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith make a key for a 2007 Saturn Aura?

We can originate, cut and program keys for this vehicle on site, including when every key is lost. The 2007 Aura uses a transponder (chip) key and a key with a separate remote fob.

Can you program a key fob I bought online for my 2007 Aura?

Sometimes. The fob has to match your vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip type, and it can't already be locked to another car, which is common with used smart keys. Send us a photo of the fob, the listing and your VIN before the appointment. If it's compatible, we'll cut and program it. If it isn't, we'll tell you before charging for an attempt, and we can supply a part we know will work.

What do I need to show before you make a key for my Aura?

A current registration or title and a government-issued photo ID in the same name. We match the VIN on the paperwork with the one on the dashboard before any cutting or programming. If you're not the registered owner, bring the owner's written authorization and a copy of their ID. If the documents are locked in the car, we'll open it first and check them there.

Can you make an Aura key from the VIN alone?

The VIN is a starting point, not a finished key. For many vehicles, the factory key code can be obtained from the VIN through manufacturer channels once ownership is verified, which lets us cut a blade that matches your locks. The chip or fob still has to be programmed at the vehicle, so we need access to the car itself. Where no code is available, we decode a lock instead.

Can you fix a broken Saturn key instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If the shell is cracked, the buttons are worn or the blade snapped, but the circuit board and chip are healthy, we can transfer the electronics into a new housing and cut a fresh blade to your key code. Your existing programming stays intact. If the board has been damaged by water or impact, a repair won't last, and we'll recommend a new programmed key instead.

When can you come out to Southern California for a car key?

We work every day from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., weekends included. Weekends are included. Call (951) 903-3193 and we'll give you an honest ETA to Southern California based on where we are at the time. If you're stuck outside our hours, it's usually smarter to leave the car parked and locked, get home safely, and call when we open than to pay for an overnight tow.

Is the 2007 Saturn Aura push-to-start?

No. The 2007 Aura uses a turn-key ignition, so the key is cut to match the ignition and doors and then programmed to the immobilizer.

What battery does a 2007 Saturn Aura key use?

Fobs for the 2007 Aura use a CR2032 coin cell. Replace it when range drops or the car shows a key-battery warning. If the fob still fails with a fresh battery, the board, buttons or programming may be the problem, which we can test on site.
