2020 Porsche Taycan Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2020 Porsche Taycan uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Porsche dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2020 Porsche Taycan, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Porsche. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

Early Taycans use a keyless fob from the same dealer-coded family as the Panamera and Cayenne of the period. The car powers up with the fob inside, and keyless door entry depends on equipment. An emergency key in the fob opens the driver's door if the fob or the 12-volt system is dead. Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo models use the same style of fob as the sedan, and the part number on your own fob decides what fits.
What's specific to the 2020 Taycan
2020 was the first model year of the Taycan J1 (1st generation). Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2020 Porsche Taycan we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything.
A 2020 Porsche Taycan is about 6 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Key options for the 2020 Porsche Taycan
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Making a new smart key is mostly a programming job. The fob has to match the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip, and then the keyless system must be told to accept it, normally through the OBD-II port. Depending on the platform, that can mean entering a PIN, waiting through a timed security procedure, or on some newer vehicles, using manufacturer online access. When every key is lost, certain models need a module removed and read on the bench. For your Porsche Taycan J1 (1st generation), we'll tell you which of those applies, and if a step is dealer-only, you'll hear it before we drive out. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob is cut by code during the same visit.
How the Porsche immobilizer works on the Taycan
Porsche has changed its key technology roughly once a decade, so the model year tells you a lot about the system you're dealing with. The 996 911 and the 986 Boxster use a one-piece key with an HU66 blade and the remote buttons in the head. For 2005 the 997 and 987 moved to a switchblade key, and the first Cayenne uses a similar flip key. The 2010 Panamera introduced the car-shaped fob that later spread to the Cayenne, 911, Boxster, Cayman and Macan. On those cars you push the fob into a slot left of the steering wheel and turn it, unless the car has Porsche Entry & Drive, which leaves a fixed handle in the slot so the fob can stay in your pocket. Starting with the 2017 Panamera, newer platforms such as the 2019 Cayenne, the 992 911 and the Taycan start without inserting anything, and their new fobs normally come from a Porsche dealer. On every one of them, a cut blade only opens a door. The engine or motor won't run until the car recognizes the key's electronics.
- The Turbo and Turbo S launched the Taycan range for 2020, with the 4S following.
- The Cross Turismo joined for 2021 and the Sport Turismo for 2022.
- A weak 12-volt battery can make a Taycan ignore a good fob, so we test it before blaming the key.
Getting a 2020 Taycan key from the dealer
New Taycan keys are ordered by VIN through a Porsche dealer and coded with factory equipment. We don't program them. We can open a Taycan when a fob is locked inside, test a fob that has stopped working, cut the emergency blade and help you arrange the dealer visit with your paperwork ready.

How we help when the key must come from Porsche
Losing every key to a Porsche can mean anything from a long visit to a dealer-only job, depending on the generation. On 2000s cars with HU66 blades, we verify your ID and ownership papers, cut a new key and learn it to the immobilizer, though some cars need immobilizer data read from a module first. On the 2010 to 2016 cars with the car-shaped fob, all-keys-lost work usually involves removing a control module and reading it on the bench, and certain cars are better handled by the dealer. On everything newer, keys are ordered by VIN through a Porsche dealer, and the car may need to get there on a flatbed. Call with your VIN and we'll tell you which route applies before anyone drives out.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Porsche dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2020 Taycan needs a dealer key
Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2020 Taycan is one of them. Porsche generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Porsche models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.
What to bring to the dealer
Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.
While you wait for the new key
Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.
What affects the dealer's price for a Taycan key
Expect the dealer's quote to include the key itself, a programming or setup charge, and sometimes a separate charge for cutting an emergency blade. If every key is lost, add the cost of getting the car to the dealership. Comparing two dealers is worth a phone call; programming charges vary more than the price of the key.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2020 Taycan, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
Taycan key battery
A fob battery rarely dies all at once. The warning signs build: you have to get closer to the car before the doors respond, the dash shows a key battery or key-not-detected message, or the push-button start only works with the fob held near the button. Inland heat speeds that decline, especially for fobs left in a hot cabin or on the dashboard. Keep a spare replacement at home in a cool drawer, sealed in its original package, and buy from a busy store where stock turns over quickly. A cell that sat on a shelf for years may arrive already partly spent.
Common Porsche key problems
- Keys for Porsches from the 2017 model year onward are ordered by VIN through a dealer and can take days to arrive. If you drive a 991.2 or 992 911, a 718, a 2017-or-later Panamera, a 2019-or-later Cayenne or Macan, or a Taycan, order a spare before you need it.
- Used Porsche fobs sold online are often locked to the car they came from. Unless a fob is new or properly prepared, it may refuse to program, so buy by part number from a source you trust or let us supply it.
- On many 911, Boxster and Cayman models the 12-volt battery sits in the front trunk, and later cars release that lid electrically. A dead battery can leave you locked out of the compartment you need for a jump, so find the emergency release and jump points in the owner's manual before you need them.
- Keyless and standard fobs can be different parts on the same Porsche, and button layouts vary with tailgate, roof and trunk equipment. The part number on the back of your fob matters more than the model year when you order a replacement.
- Switchblade keys on the 997, 987 and first-generation Cayenne wear at the hinge until the blade won't lock open. A replacement shell, or a new blade cut to code, fixes most of them without reprogramming the chip.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Photograph the back of your fob and any key tag that came with the car. The FCC ID, part number and key code printed there make ordering a replacement faster and more accurate. Store the photos somewhere you can reach from any device, not only on the phone that might go missing along with the keys.
- Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
- On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.
- Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
- Be careful with discount fobs from online marketplaces. A listing may match your remote's shape while using a different frequency, chip or FCC ID, and many used smart keys are locked to their original vehicle. If you already bought one, send us the listing or a photo before the visit so nobody pays for a programming attempt that can't work.
Proof of ownership
Before we cut or program a key for any vehicle, we verify that you have the right to it. Please have two things ready: the current registration or the title, and a government-issued photo ID with a matching name. We also check that the VIN on those documents matches the VIN plate on the dashboard. If the registration is locked inside the car, that's fine; we open the vehicle first, check the paperwork in the glove box, and only then make the key. If something doesn't line up, we stop and sort it out before any key is made.
