2020 Porsche Cayman Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2020 Porsche Cayman uses a remote head key and a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Porsche dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2020 Porsche Cayman, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Porsche. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The 718 Cayman keeps the car-shaped fob and the ignition control left of the steering wheel: insert and turn the fob, or with Porsche Entry & Drive, leave it in your pocket. The fob hides an emergency key for the door and runs on a CR2032. Turbocharged flat-fours power most cars, while the GT4, GT4 RS and GTS 4.0 use flat-sixes, but the fob part number, not the engine, decides what fits.
What's specific to the 2020 Cayman
The 2020 Porsche Cayman is the fourth of 9 model years in the Cayman 982 (718 Cayman) (2017–2025), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source.
A 2020 Porsche Cayman is about 6 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Key options for the 2020 Porsche Cayman
- Remote head key. A remote-head key puts two separate systems in one piece: a cut blade with a transponder chip that the immobilizer reads, and a small circuit board with buttons that signals the body control module to work the door locks. On a 2020 Porsche Cayman with this style of key, each side is programmed separately. That explains some confusing failures. If the remote stops working but the car still starts, the problem is usually the battery or the remote board. If the buttons work but the engine won't run, look at the chip side. Knowing which half failed tells us whether you need a repair, a reprogram or a whole new key.
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Proximity keys bring a security trade-off worth understanding. Because the fob is always listening, thieves with relay equipment can stretch its signal from inside your house to the car in the driveway. Keeping the fob away from exterior walls, or in a signal-blocking pouch, closes that gap, and some fobs offer a sleep mode described in the owner's manual. If a smart key for your 2020 Porsche Cayman is lost or stolen, programming a replacement is the moment to delete the missing fob from the car's memory. And be wary of used fobs from online sellers: a lot of them are locked to the vehicle they came from and can't be reprogrammed to yours.
How the Porsche immobilizer works on the Cayman
Porsche has changed its key technology roughly once a decade, so the model year tells you a lot about the system you're dealing with. The 996 911 and the 986 Boxster use a one-piece key with an HU66 blade and the remote buttons in the head. For 2005 the 997 and 987 moved to a switchblade key, and the first Cayenne uses a similar flip key. The 2010 Panamera introduced the car-shaped fob that later spread to the Cayenne, 911, Boxster, Cayman and Macan. On those cars you push the fob into a slot left of the steering wheel and turn it, unless the car has Porsche Entry & Drive, which leaves a fixed handle in the slot so the fob can stay in your pocket. Starting with the 2017 Panamera, newer platforms such as the 2019 Cayenne, the 992 911 and the Taycan start without inserting anything, and their new fobs normally come from a Porsche dealer. On every one of them, a cut blade only opens a door. The engine or motor won't run until the car recognizes the key's electronics.
- Production of the gasoline 718 Cayman ended in October 2025.
- The GT4 RS, launched during this generation, uses the same style of car-shaped fob as other 718 models.
- The 718 Cayman keeps its ignition control to the left of the steering wheel.
Getting a 2020 Cayman key from the dealer
New 718 Cayman fobs are ordered by VIN through a Porsche dealer and coded with the factory diagnostic system. Aftermarket coverage for 2017 and later Porsche sports cars is inconsistent and depends on the car's module version, so we check by VIN before promising anything. When our equipment can't handle a particular car, we say so and help you set up the dealer visit instead.
Plan on a Porsche dealer for new 718 keys; we check by VIN in case a spare is possible and handle lockouts and emergency blades.
How we help when the key must come from Porsche
Losing every key to a Porsche can mean anything from a long visit to a dealer-only job, depending on the generation. On 2000s cars with HU66 blades, we verify your ID and ownership papers, cut a new key and learn it to the immobilizer, though some cars need immobilizer data read from a module first. On the 2010 to 2016 cars with the car-shaped fob, all-keys-lost work usually involves removing a control module and reading it on the bench, and certain cars are better handled by the dealer. On everything newer, keys are ordered by VIN through a Porsche dealer, and the car may need to get there on a flatbed. Call with your VIN and we'll tell you which route applies before anyone drives out.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Porsche dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2020 Cayman needs a dealer key
Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2020 Cayman is one of them. Porsche generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Porsche models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.
What to bring to the dealer
Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.
While you wait for the new key
Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.
What affects the dealer's price for a Cayman key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2020 Cayman, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
Cayman key battery
If a new CR2032 doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.
Common Porsche key problems
- A fading CR2032 in a car-shaped fob often shows up first as Porsche Entry & Drive ignoring the door handle. Replace the cell before ordering a new fob, and check the owner's manual for the backup procedure when the fob isn't detected.
- Rubber buttons on 996 and 986 remote keys wear through and the plastic heads crack with age. If the board and chip are still healthy, moving them into a new shell and cutting a fresh HU66 blade usually beats buying a whole new key.
- Keyless and standard fobs can be different parts on the same Porsche, and button layouts vary with tailgate, roof and trunk equipment. The part number on the back of your fob matters more than the model year when you order a replacement.
- Keys for Porsches from the 2017 model year onward are ordered by VIN through a dealer and can take days to arrive. If you drive a 991.2 or 992 911, a 718, a 2017-or-later Panamera, a 2019-or-later Cayenne or Macan, or a Taycan, order a spare before you need it.
- Switchblade keys on the 997, 987 and first-generation Cayenne wear at the hinge until the blade won't lock open. A replacement shell, or a new blade cut to code, fixes most of them without reprogramming the chip.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
- Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
- When a key's head cracks or its blade bends, replace it before it fails. A transponder chip can slip out of a split head, and a bent blade can break off inside the ignition or door lock, turning a simple key replacement into an extraction and repair job. Small symptoms are the inexpensive time to act.
- Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
- Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2020 Porsche Cayman?
New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Plan on a Porsche dealer for new 718 keys; we check by VIN in case a spare is possible and handle lockouts and emergency blades. The 2020 Cayman uses a remote head key and a smart proximity key with push-button start.
Is the 2020 Porsche Cayman push-to-start?
It depends on the trim. Some 2020 Cayman trims have push-button start with a smart key, while others use a turn-key ignition. The quickest way to tell is the start button on the dash, or your VIN, which we can decode when you call.
What battery does a 2020 Porsche Cayman key use?
Fobs for the 2020 Cayman use a CR2032 coin cell. Replace it when range drops or the car shows a key-battery warning. If the fob still fails with a fresh battery, the board, buttons or programming may be the problem, which we can test on site.
How long does a dealer key for a 2020 Porsche Cayman take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
