2025 MINI Cooper Convertible Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2025 MINI Cooper Convertible, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through MINI. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The fourth-generation Convertible arrived in the US as a 2025 model with the same electronics as the new Cooper hardtop. It uses the new-generation smart fob and keyless start from the toggle-bar switch, varies its keyless-entry content by trim and package, and supports MINI Digital Key on compatible phones. US versions are the Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works. Since the car is so new, aftermarket fobs for it are scarce, and a replacement normally comes from an MINI dealer, coded to the VIN.

What's specific to the 2025 Cooper Convertible

2025 was the first model year of the Cooper Convertible F67 (fourth generation). Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2025 MINI Cooper Convertible we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything. It also marks a change from the previous generation: the 2024 Cooper Convertible used a smart proximity key with push-button start, while the 2025 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system. Keys from the older car will not work in this one.

At 1 year old, a 2025 MINI Cooper Convertible is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.

Key options for the 2025 MINI Cooper Convertible

  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Making a new smart key is mostly a programming job. The fob has to match the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip, and then the keyless system must be told to accept it, normally through the OBD-II port. Depending on the platform, that can mean entering a PIN, waiting through a timed security procedure, or on some newer vehicles, using manufacturer online access. When every key is lost, certain models need a module removed and read on the bench. For your MINI Cooper Convertible F67 (fourth generation), we'll tell you which of those applies, and if a step is dealer-only, you'll hear it before we drive out. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob is cut by code during the same visit.
  • Phone as key. Phone keys fail in ordinary ways: a dead battery, an app that logs you out after an update, Bluetooth switched off, or a new phone that hasn't been set up yet. That's why every vehicle with a phone key, including an MINI Cooper Convertible, should have a working physical backup, whether that's a key card, a fob or a keypad code. Some phones keep a power reserve that lets the wallet key work for a while after the screen goes dark, but don't count on it in a parking garage. Where your platform allows a locksmith to program a backup fob or card, we can do that on-site; where it doesn't, we'll explain the dealer path.

How the MINI immobilizer works on the Cooper Convertible

Every MINI sold new in the US since the brand's 2002 launch has been a BMW Group car, and its key systems follow BMW's closely. The first-generation Cooper and Cooper S hardtops (2002-2006) and the R52 Convertible (2005-2008) use BMW's EWS immobilizer with a three-button remote-head key on the HU92 internal-cut blade and a Philips ID44 transponder. The second-generation family, which covers the 2007-2013 hardtop plus the Clubman, Convertible, Coupe, Roadster, Countryman and Paceman through 2016, moved to BMW's Car Access System, the CAS3 family. Its round fob slides into a slot in the dash, carries an ID46 chip and hides an HU92-family emergency blade, and Comfort Access versions work from a pocket. From the 2014 F56 hardtop through the last 2024 Clubman and Countryman, key data lives in the body domain controller (BDC), with Hitag Pro (ID49) smart fobs, an emergency blade cataloged as HU127 or HU100R, and keyless start on every car. The 2025 and newer Cooper, Cooper 4 Door, Convertible and Countryman run BMW's latest electronics and add MINI Digital Key Plus on compatible phones. In every era, a key the immobilizer doesn't recognize won't start the car, even if it opens the doors.

  • The F67 shares its key system with the F66 two-door and F65 four-door Cooper.
  • MINI USA lists Digital Key compatibility for Apple devices, Samsung phones running Android 13.1 or later and certain Google Pixel models.
  • The 2025 model year was the first for this generation in the US.

Getting a 2025 Cooper Convertible key from the dealer

Dealers currently handle key programming for the F67, ordering a fob coded to the VIN and pairing it with BMW Group's online systems. Digital key setup is done by the owner in the MINI App. Aftermarket tool coverage for this platform is thin, so we won't sell a key we can't program. If you're locked out, we can open the car and help you gather the ownership documents and VIN details the dealer will want.

Fobs for this generation come from MINI dealers for now. We can open the car and help you prepare for the dealer visit.

How we help when the key must come from MINI

Losing every key is fixable on most MINIs built before 2025, but the work depends on the generation. We start by verifying your ID and proof of ownership. On 2002-2008 EWS cars, we cut an HU92 blade by code or by decoding the driver's door lock, then read the EWS module to make a new transponder key. The 2007-2016 CAS3-family cars can usually be done through the OBD-II port once a new fob and emergency blade are ready, though some later modules need a bench read. The 2014-2024 F-series cars require reading the body domain controller, through OBD-II on some builds and on the bench on others, and some later builds aren't covered by aftermarket tools, so we confirm coverage by VIN before you commit. For 2025 and newer models, plan on a dealer-supplied fob; we can still open the car and help you organize the paperwork.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the MINI dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2025 Cooper Convertible needs a dealer key

Why can't a mobile locksmith simply program a new key for a 2025 Cooper Convertible? Because the newest security architectures keep the secret part of the process at MINI. The car will only accept a key whose encrypted data was issued for its VIN, and that data comes from the manufacturer through the dealer's parts and service systems. Some owners are told otherwise online; we'd rather tell you plainly before anyone drives out.

What to bring to the dealer

Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.

While you wait for the new key

Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.

What affects the dealer's price for a Cooper Convertible key

Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2025 Cooper Convertible, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

Cooper Convertible key battery

If a new replacement doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.

Common MINI key problems

  • Driver's door lock cylinders on older MINIs rarely get used and can stiffen with dust and old grease. If the fob or 12-volt battery dies, the emergency blade may not turn, so lubricate the cylinder now and then.
  • Comfort Access and standard fobs look almost identical but aren't interchangeable. The wrong version can cost you hands-free entry, so match the fob to the way your car left the factory.
  • The plastic shell on 2002-2008 remote-head keys cracks around the blade and the buttons wear through. Moving the original transponder and circuit board into a new HU92 shell, with its blade cut to match, often fixes it without reprogramming.
  • Used MINI fobs from online sellers are usually locked to the car they came from. Some can be unlocked and reused with the right equipment, but check the FCC ID and part number with us before you buy one.
  • On 2002-2008 EWS cars, replacing the engine computer or EWS module without synchronizing them leaves a car that cranks but won't run, even with the right key. The rolling code between the two modules has to be realigned.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.
  • Be careful with discount fobs from online marketplaces. A listing may match your remote's shape while using a different frequency, chip or FCC ID, and many used smart keys are locked to their original vehicle. If you already bought one, send us the listing or a photo before the visit so nobody pays for a programming attempt that can't work.
  • Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.

Proof of ownership

Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.
