2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Mercedes-Benz dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Mercedes-Benz. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.
2019 S-Class key specs
| Generation | W222, 2014–2020 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Transponder / chip | Mercedes FBS4 |
| Locksmith support | Dealer key required |
The W222 S-Class moved to push-button start and Mercedes' FBS4 key system, and the S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet that followed, along with the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, use the same approach. The fob only has to be inside the car to start it, and the door handles respond to touch on cars with Keyless-Go. Like other Mercedes fobs, it contains a mechanical emergency key for the driver's door. S550, S560, S600, S63 and S65 versions all depend on the same dealer-coded keys.
What's specific to the 2019 S-Class
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the sixth of 7 model years in the S-Class W222 (2014–2020), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source. A 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is about 7 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Smart-key cars like the 2019 S-Class can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.
Key options for the 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
How the Mercedes-Benz immobilizer works on the S-Class
Mercedes-Benz calls its immobilizer the Drive Authorization System, and for key work it helps to sort the cars into three eras. The oldest models we cover, such as the 2000-2002 E-Class, the last W202 C-Class and the first CLK, use a key with remote buttons in its head and an HU64 two-track blade that turns a conventional ignition lock while the immobilizer checks electronics inside the key. The next era, known in the trade as FBS3 or DAS 3, came to the US on the S-Class and CL around 2000 and spread to nearly every model within a few years. Its key is a fob that plugs into an electronic ignition switch and identifies itself by infrared: chrome-bodied at first, then the familiar black fob with chrome sides. Keyless-Go let many of these cars open and start with the fob left in a pocket. Around 2014 and 2015, Mercedes began moving models to FBS4, and push-button start gradually became standard. FBS4 keys are produced by Mercedes-Benz for one VIN, which is why most newer cars mean a dealer order.
- The W222 was among the first Mercedes models to use FBS4, which Mercedes introduced to make key copying far harder.
- Maybach, coupe and cabriolet versions follow the same dealer-supplied key process as the sedan.
- A dealer can disable a lost FBS4 key so it can no longer start the car.
- S-Class Coupe and Cabriolet models stayed on sale through 2021, so a 2021 two-door is a W222-family car even though the 2021 sedan is the W223.
Getting a 2019 S-Class key from the dealer
FBS4 keys for the W222 are produced by Mercedes-Benz for one VIN and supplied through a dealer once ownership is verified, and they arrive ready to register with the car. We don't originate keys for this generation and won't suggest otherwise. What we offer is the rest of the job: careful lockout service on a car where a scratched door frame matters, fob battery checks, emergency key retrieval, and help preparing the documents your dealer needs.
W222 keys are built by Mercedes-Benz for the VIN and ordered through a dealer; we handle lockouts and fob checks.
How we help when the key must come from Mercedes-Benz
With every key gone, the era matters again. On many FBS3 cars, we remove the electronic ignition switch, read it on the bench and calculate a new key from the car's own data, with no working key to copy. That takes longer than making a spare, and a few switches or control units won't cooperate, but it often saves a tow to the dealer. For FBS4 cars and for the oldest pre-FBS3 models, the dependable route is a key built by Mercedes-Benz for your VIN and ordered through a dealer after you show ID and proof of ownership. While that order is filled, we can open the car without damage so you can reach documents or belongings, and a dealer can block the lost keys so they no longer start the car.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Mercedes-Benz dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2019 S-Class needs a dealer key
Why can't a mobile locksmith simply program a new key for a 2019 S-Class? Because the newest security architectures keep the secret part of the process at Mercedes-Benz. The car will only accept a key whose encrypted data was issued for its VIN, and that data comes from the manufacturer through the dealer's parts and service systems. Some owners are told otherwise online; we'd rather tell you plainly before anyone drives out.
What to bring to the dealer
Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.
While you wait for the new key
Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.
What affects the dealer's price for an S-Class key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2019 S-Class, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
S-Class key battery
A fob battery rarely dies all at once. The warning signs build: you have to get closer to the car before the doors respond, the dash shows a key battery or key-not-detected message, or the push-button start only works with the fob held near the button. Inland heat speeds that decline, especially for fobs left in a hot cabin or on the dashboard. Keep a spare replacement at home in a cool drawer, sealed in its original package, and buy from a busy store where stock turns over quickly. A cell that sat on a shelf for years may arrive already partly spent.
Common Mercedes-Benz key problems
- Mercedes keys are written to one car, so a secondhand fob bought online usually can't be programmed to yours. New keys made for your car, or keys ordered by VIN through a dealer, are the options that work.
- The electronic steering lock is a known weak point on the W204 C-Class and the W212 and W207 E-Class. When it fails, the key goes in but won't turn and the dash stays dark, and a new key will not fix it.
- On dash-slot Mercedes models from the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s, a key that slides in but won't turn often points to a worn electronic ignition switch or a weak car battery rather than a bad key. We test both before replacing anything.
- Every Mercedes smart key hides a mechanical emergency key that slides out of the fob. Many owners never notice it until the fob or the car's 12-volt battery dies and the driver's door has to be opened by hand.
- The black Mercedes fob with chrome sides takes a CR2025 coin cell, and a small lamp on the fob flashes when you press a button. If the lamp stays dark or the remote stops working, try a fresh cell before ordering a key.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
- Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
- Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. W222 keys are built by Mercedes-Benz for the VIN and ordered through a dealer; we handle lockouts and fob checks. The 2019 S-Class uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.
Is the 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class push-to-start?
Yes. The 2019 S-Class uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.
How long does a dealer key for a 2019 Mercedes-Benz S-Class take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
