2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA uses a remote head key and a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Mercedes-Benz dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Mercedes-Benz. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

Most first-generation GLAs start the way older Mercedes models do: the fob slides into an ignition slot on the dash, to the right of the steering column, and turns. Cars ordered with Keyless-Go have a start button in that slot instead and open when you grip the door handle, and the button can be pulled out so the fob can go in. The fob carries lock, unlock, liftgate and panic buttons and hides a slim emergency key for the driver's door. The AMG GLA 45 uses the same key layout as the GLA 250.

What's specific to the 2015 GLA

2015 was the first model year of the GLA X156 (1st generation). Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything.

At roughly 11 years old, a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA has usually seen real wear. Ignition and door cylinders on high-mileage cars wear along with the key, so we cut new keys to factory code rather than copying a worn key. Fob cases crack, buttons wear through and solder joints loosen at this age, so a new shell or a replacement remote often beats repairing the old one. Many have changed hands more than once, so erasing keys you can't account for is worth doing during the visit.

Key options for the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA

  • Remote head key. A remote-head key puts two separate systems in one piece: a cut blade with a transponder chip that the immobilizer reads, and a small circuit board with buttons that signals the body control module to work the door locks. On a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA with this style of key, each side is programmed separately. That explains some confusing failures. If the remote stops working but the car still starts, the problem is usually the battery or the remote board. If the buttons work but the engine won't run, look at the chip side. Knowing which half failed tells us whether you need a repair, a reprogram or a whole new key.
  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Making a new smart key is mostly a programming job. The fob has to match the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip, and then the keyless system must be told to accept it, normally through the OBD-II port. Depending on the platform, that can mean entering a PIN, waiting through a timed security procedure, or on some newer vehicles, using manufacturer online access. When every key is lost, certain models need a module removed and read on the bench. For your Mercedes-Benz GLA X156 (1st generation), we'll tell you which of those applies, and if a step is dealer-only, you'll hear it before we drive out. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob is cut by code during the same visit.

How the Mercedes-Benz immobilizer works on the GLA

Mercedes-Benz calls its immobilizer the Drive Authorization System, and for key work it helps to sort the cars into three eras. The oldest models we cover, such as the 2000-2002 E-Class, the last W202 C-Class and the first CLK, use a key with remote buttons in its head and an HU64 two-track blade that turns a conventional ignition lock while the immobilizer checks electronics inside the key. The next era, known in the trade as FBS3 or DAS 3, came to the US on the S-Class and CL around 2000 and spread to nearly every model within a few years. Its key is a fob that plugs into an electronic ignition switch and identifies itself by infrared: chrome-bodied at first, then the familiar black fob with chrome sides. Keyless-Go let many of these cars open and start with the fob left in a pocket. Around 2014 and 2015, Mercedes began moving models to FBS4, and push-button start gradually became standard. FBS4 keys are produced by Mercedes-Benz for one VIN, which is why most newer cars mean a dealer order.

  • The GLA shared its platform and much of its key hardware with the 2014-2019 CLA, a useful clue when reading supplier listings.
  • A red battery check lamp on the fob should flash briefly with each press while the battery is healthy.
  • A Mercedes dealer can block a lost key so it can no longer start the car.

Getting a 2015 GLA key from the dealer

GLA keys are tied to the car through Mercedes' drive authorization system, and for most US cars a new key has to be produced by Mercedes-Benz for the VIN and ordered through a dealer. We check your VIN first, because aftermarket coverage depends on the exact control unit in the car and changes over time. When the dealer route applies, we can still open a locked GLA, test the fob and its battery, and make sure you have the ID and registration the dealer will want.

Plan on a dealer-ordered key for most GLAs; we check by VIN, handle lockouts and help with fob problems.

How we help when the key must come from Mercedes-Benz

With every key gone, the era matters again. On many FBS3 cars, we remove the electronic ignition switch, read it on the bench and calculate a new key from the car's own data, with no working key to copy. That takes longer than making a spare, and a few switches or control units won't cooperate, but it often saves a tow to the dealer. For FBS4 cars and for the oldest pre-FBS3 models, the dependable route is a key built by Mercedes-Benz for your VIN and ordered through a dealer after you show ID and proof of ownership. While that order is filled, we can open the car without damage so you can reach documents or belongings, and a dealer can block the lost keys so they no longer start the car.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Mercedes-Benz dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2015 GLA needs a dealer key

Why can't a mobile locksmith simply program a new key for a 2015 GLA? Because the newest security architectures keep the secret part of the process at Mercedes-Benz. The car will only accept a key whose encrypted data was issued for its VIN, and that data comes from the manufacturer through the dealer's parts and service systems. Some owners are told otherwise online; we'd rather tell you plainly before anyone drives out.

What to bring to the dealer

Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.

While you wait for the new key

While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.

What affects the dealer's price for a GLA key

Expect the dealer's quote to include the key itself, a programming or setup charge, and sometimes a separate charge for cutting an emergency blade. If every key is lost, add the cost of getting the car to the dealership. Comparing two dealers is worth a phone call; programming charges vary more than the price of the key.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2015 GLA, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

GLA key battery

A fob battery rarely dies all at once. The warning signs build: you have to get closer to the car before the doors respond, the dash shows a key battery or key-not-detected message, or the push-button start only works with the fob held near the button. Inland heat speeds that decline, especially for fobs left in a hot cabin or on the dashboard. Keep a spare replacement at home in a cool drawer, sealed in its original package, and buy from a busy store where stock turns over quickly. A cell that sat on a shelf for years may arrive already partly spent.

Common Mercedes-Benz key problems

  • Mercedes keys are written to one car, so a secondhand fob bought online usually can't be programmed to yours. New keys made for your car, or keys ordered by VIN through a dealer, are the options that work.
  • Inland Empire summer heat shortens coin-cell life and is hard on fobs left on a sunny dashboard. If a Mercedes key starts responding only at close range, a new battery is the simplest first step.
  • Keyless-Go cars can be targeted by relay thieves who pass the fob's signal from inside a house to the car. Many newer fobs switch off their keyless function after two quick presses of the lock button, and a signal-blocking pouch helps too.
  • Every Mercedes smart key hides a mechanical emergency key that slides out of the fob. Many owners never notice it until the fob or the car's 12-volt battery dies and the driver's door has to be opened by hand.
  • The electronic steering lock is a known weak point on the W204 C-Class and the W212 and W207 E-Class. When it fails, the key goes in but won't turn and the dash stays dark, and a new key will not fix it.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • When a key's head cracks or its blade bends, replace it before it fails. A transponder chip can slip out of a split head, and a bent blade can break off inside the ignition or door lock, turning a simple key replacement into an extraction and repair job. Small symptoms are the inexpensive time to act.
  • Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
  • Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.

Proof of ownership

Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith make a key for a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA?

New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Plan on a dealer-ordered key for most GLAs; we check by VIN, handle lockouts and help with fob problems. The 2015 GLA uses a remote head key and a smart proximity key with push-button start.

Is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA push-to-start?

It depends on the trim. Some 2015 GLA trims have push-button start with a smart key, while others use a turn-key ignition. The quickest way to tell is the start button on the dash, or your VIN, which we can decode when you call.

How long does a dealer key for a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA take?

It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
