Mazda CX-70 Key Replacement

Short answer: The CX-70 is the two-row sibling of the CX-90, introduced for the 2025 model year on Mazda's large rear-drive-based platform with an inline-six mild hybrid or a plug-in hybrid four-cylinder. Its key system is the newest in the lineup: AES-encrypted smart fobs and an immobilizer that, at the dealer, exchanges two 16-character codes instead of one. That extra layer is good for theft resistance and is exactly why we check tool coverage carefully before quoting a key. Keys for the Mazda CX-70 generally come from the Mazda dealer; we help with lockouts and preparing the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

All CX-70s use a smart fob with push-button start. Like other current Mazdas, the transmitter has a removable lower cover holding the auxiliary key and a CR2032 cell. New vehicles reach the dealer with the auxiliary keys and transmitters in the front cup holders, and the dealer fits the keys into the transmitters before delivery, so a used car missing its blades isn't unusual. There is no metal ignition key; the auxiliary blade is only for the driver's door when the fob or the 12-volt battery is dead. Mazda's dealer procedure for the CX-70 uses two outcodes and two incodes, 32 characters in all, entered through MDARS, and Mazda's service alerts say a car with no working transmitter is disabled until the dealer programs new ones. Outside the dealer, programming coverage for this new model is limited and changes often, so call with your VIN and we will say plainly whether a tool exists for it or whether the dealer is your only route. We can still help with entry, lockouts and the emergency blade.

Mazda key security

Mazda key systems fall into a few clear eras, and knowing which one your car belongs to tells us most of what the job involves. Around 2000, Mazda fitted a stand-alone immobilizer control unit to the MPV, V6 versions of the 626 and many Miatas. The transponder in the key talks to that unit through a coil around the ignition, and the unit then passes a code word to the engine computer. Ford-built models, the Tribute and the B-Series pickup, used Ford's PATS instead. From the 2003 Mazda6 through about 2015, Mazda settled on Texas 4D63 transponders on the MAZ24R blade, first 40-bit and later 80-bit, with flip keys on most cars and an optional advanced key that started the engine with a twist knob or a START/STOP button. The 2013 CX-5 and 2014 Mazda3 moved the lineup to push-button start with NXP Hitag Pro fobs that hide a small emergency blade. Starting with the 2019 Mazda3, and across most models by 2021, fobs switched to AES encryption and a thicker CR2032 battery. Each step made the cars harder to steal and narrowed what can be done without a PIN or dealer software.

On key-start Mazdas from about 2003 to 2015, we program through the OBD-II port: the immobilizer issues an outcode and our equipment answers with the matching incode, the same exchange a dealer runs in Mazda's own software. Flip-key remote buttons pair through an ignition and door-switch routine that needs no computer. Push-button Mazdas from 2013 onward have no on-board option. Every fob goes in with a programmer, it has to be new or professionally reset, and its emergency blade is cut separately. Cars that have received dealer software updates can reject some aftermarket programmers, so coverage on 2014-2019 models varies by VIN. On 2020-and-later fobs, plan for a PIN or online authorization step, and the CX-70 and CX-90 use a two-part, 32-character code exchange at the dealer. Ford-built Tributes and B-Series trucks follow Ford PATS rules. Before any of this, we check your ID and registration so we know the car is yours.

How we help when the key must come from Mazda

Losing every key to a Mazda is fixable, but the route depends on the year. On transponder-key cars, we decode the driver's door lock to cut a working blade, erase the old keys from the immobilizer, and program at least two new keys in the same session so a lost key can't start the car. Push-button Mazdas need a new fob plus its emergency blade, and because Mazda tightly controls the cutting code for that blade, decoding the lock is usually faster than waiting on a code. For 2020-and-later fobs, and for the CX-70 and CX-90, Mazda's own procedure for a car with no working transmitter runs through dealer software. Some aftermarket equipment covers certain Mazda3 and CX-30 years with a PIN, but coverage varies, and we will tell you up front if yours is one that has to go to the dealer. Expect to show ID and proof of ownership first.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Mazda dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

CX-70 key types explained

  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2026 Mazda CX-70 open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.

Why the CX-70 needs a dealer key

Why can't a mobile locksmith simply program a new key for a CX-70? Because the newest security architectures keep the secret part of the process at Mazda. The car will only accept a key whose encrypted data was issued for its VIN, and that data comes from the manufacturer through the dealer's parts and service systems. Some owners are told otherwise online; we'd rather tell you plainly before anyone drives out.

What to bring to the dealer

Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.

While you wait for the new key

Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.

What affects the dealer's price for a CX-70 key

Expect the dealer's quote to include the key itself, a programming or setup charge, and sometimes a separate charge for cutting an emergency blade. If every key is lost, add the cost of getting the car to the dealership. Comparing two dealers is worth a phone call; programming charges vary more than the price of the key.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your CX-70, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

Common Mazda key problems

  • Push-button Mazdas from about 2019 onward have a fob power-saving mode: four quick presses of lock, then a long press, switches off keyless entry and push-button start. It is easy to trigger by accident, and the fob then looks dead even with a fresh battery.
  • Mazda moved its fobs from the CR2025 to the thicker CR2032 starting with the 2019 Mazda3 and on most models by 2021. Mazda warns that installing the wrong cell can make the transmitter malfunction, so read the old battery before buying.
  • A fob left in the cup holder or a metal-lined console tray may not be detected. Mazda's own quick-start guides call the cup holder a dead zone, and a red KEY light usually clears once the fob is moved.
  • Retractable flip keys from roughly 2004 to 2015 wear out at the pivot: the blade wobbles, won't lock open, or folds under pressure. The circuit board is usually fine, so a new shell and freshly cut blade often solve it.
  • Inland Empire summer heat shortens coin-cell life. A flashing green KEY indicator on smart-key Mazdas is the low-battery warning, and replacing the cell then beats having the fob quit in a parking lot.
  • On 2000-2002 626 and MPV models, an unrecognized key can start the engine for a few seconds before the immobilizer shuts it off. Repeated attempts can store an immobilizer code, and the system then needs a reset.
  • Some 2001-2002 Miatas crank without starting because of an immobilizer or PCM fault covered by recall 3505H. Mazda stopped completing that recall in July 2020 when parts ran out, so repairs now take sourcing.
  • Many newer Mazdas hide the driver's lock under a handle cap, and if both small auxiliary keys are lost, Mazda calls for code cutting on its approved key machines. Decoding the lock is often the quickest fix.

Proof of ownership

Before we cut or program a key for any vehicle, we verify that you have the right to it. Please have two things ready: the current registration or the title, and a government-issued photo ID with a matching name. We also check that the VIN on those documents matches the VIN plate on the dashboard. If the registration is locked inside the car, that's fine; we open the vehicle first, check the paperwork in the glove box, and only then make the key. If something doesn't line up, we stop and sort it out before any key is made.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith program a new key for a Mazda CX-70?

Not reliably today. Mazda issues the key data for this model through its own secure systems, so new keys are ordered and coded through the dealer. We'd rather tell you that on the phone than charge for a visit that can't finish the job. We can still help with lockouts and with preparing the dealer order.

Can you open my CX-70 if I'm locked out?

Yes. Opening a locked CX-70 without damage is separate from making a new key, and we handle it on site. We verify ownership first, so have your ID and registration ready, or tell us where they are inside the car.

How long does a dealer key for a Mazda CX-70 take?

It depends on dealer stock and whether the key is pre-coded centrally. Some keys arrive the same day, others take several days. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN, ask for the total including programming, and ask whether the car must be at the dealership for setup.
