2025 Honda Prologue Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2025 Honda Prologue uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Honda dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

2025 Honda Prologue Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2025 Honda Prologue, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Honda. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

Every Prologue uses a GM-designed smart key (FCC YGOG21TB2, part 85024679) with lock, unlock, hatch, panic and remote start buttons. It runs on a CR2450 battery, a thicker cell than most Honda fobs use. A mechanical emergency key slides out of the fob for the driver's door, which matters if the fob battery dies. The vehicle has to detect the fob inside the cabin before it will power on and drive.

What's specific to the 2025 Prologue

The 2025 Honda Prologue is the second of 3 model years in the Prologue First generation (2024–2026), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source. At 1 year old, a 2025 Honda Prologue is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.

Smart-key cars like the 2025 Prologue can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.

Key options for the 2025 Honda Prologue

  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2025 Honda Prologue open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.

How the Honda immobilizer works on the Prologue

Honda's key systems changed in a few clear steps between 2000 and today, and the model year usually tells us which one your car has. In 2000 the Accord already carried a Megamos ID13 transponder in the key head, read by a coil around the ignition; the Civic followed for 2001 and the CR-V for 2002. Honda moved to Philips ID46 crypto transponders on the 2003 Accord and spread them across the lineup by about 2007, while the old edge-cut blade gave way to the laser-cut HON66 profile on most models. The same period brought remote-head keys, with lock and unlock buttons molded into the key itself. The 2013 Accord introduced Philips ID47 keys, often called Honda G keys, along with smart keys and push-button start on upper trims, and by the 2018 Accord every trim started with a button. Starting with the 2022 Civic, Honda began moving to AES-encrypted 4A fobs, now also used in the Accord and CR-V. On key-start Hondas, the key-shaped immobilizer light should go out a moment after you switch on; if it blinks, the car has not recognized the key.

  • The Prologue shares GM's BEV3 platform with the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Cadillac Lyriq and Acura ZDX.
  • Its fob uses a CR2450 battery, unlike the CR2032 in most Honda smart keys.
  • Production began in January 2024 at GM's Ramos Arizpe plant in Coahuila, Mexico.

Getting a 2025 Prologue key from the dealer

Programming a Prologue fob runs through GM's dealer software rather than Honda's, and aftermarket coverage for this platform is limited. We don't promise to originate keys for this vehicle. What we can do is open it if you're locked out, cut the emergency blade when you have a fob, and help you line up the dealer visit with your VIN, ID and registration ready so the replacement goes quickly.

New fobs come through a Honda dealer using GM software. We can help with lockouts, emergency blades and coordinating the dealer order.

How we help when the key must come from Honda

Losing every key to a Honda built between 2000 and about 2021 is usually handled where the car sits. We decode the driver's door lock to cut a working blade, connect through the OBD-II port, register new keys, and erase the lost ones so they can no longer start the car. A 2000 Civic or a 2000-2001 CR-V has no transponder at all, so a correctly cut key is the whole job. Smart-key Hondas need a new fob plus a cut emergency blade. The newest systems, on the 2022-and-later Civic and the 2023-and-later Accord and CR-V, depend on current tool coverage, and some cases still have to go through a Honda dealer; we tell you which applies before any work starts. Expect to show ID and proof of ownership first.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Honda dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2025 Prologue needs a dealer key

Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2025 Prologue is one of them. Honda generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Honda models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.

What to bring to the dealer

Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.

While you wait for the new key

Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.

What affects the dealer's price for a Prologue key

Expect the dealer's quote to include the key itself, a programming or setup charge, and sometimes a separate charge for cutting an emergency blade. If every key is lost, add the cost of getting the car to the dealership. Comparing two dealers is worth a phone call; programming charges vary more than the price of the key.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2025 Prologue, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

Prologue key battery

Most fobs for a 2025 Honda Prologue open along a small slot in the seam; a coin or a plastic pry tool works better than a screwdriver, which chews up the housing. If the fob hides a mechanical blade, slide it out first, since the case often opens from that gap. Note which side of the old cell faces up, swap in a fresh CR2450, and press the halves together until they click all the way around. Handle the new battery by its edges, because skin oil on the faces can hurt contact. In most cases the fob keeps its programming through a battery change, so test lock, unlock and start, and you're done.

Common Honda key problems

  • Remote-head keys take small CR1616 or CR1620 cells, while smart keys use a CR2032. Inland Empire summer heat shortens their life, and shrinking remote range is usually the first warning before a fob stops responding.
  • Honda has recalled some early-2000s models because a worn ignition interlock could let the key come out while the shifter was not in Park. If yours does that, check recall status by VIN at nhtsa.gov.
  • A blinking key-shaped light with a no-start usually means the immobilizer did not read the chip. Honda warns that another transponder key or metal key chain near the ignition can interfere, and a chip lost from a cracked key head causes the same symptom.
  • Remote-head keys, used from the 2003 Accord onward, tend to fail at the plastic: the key-ring loop snaps, the head splits, or the blade works loose. The circuit board and transponder can usually be moved into a new shell instead of buying a whole key.
  • On several newer Hondas, including the 2018-and-later Accord, the driver's keyhole sits under a small cap on the door handle. The tip of the fob's emergency key pries the cap off, and it is easy to miss when you are locked out.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • When a key's head cracks or its blade bends, replace it before it fails. A transponder chip can slip out of a split head, and a bent blade can break off inside the ignition or door lock, turning a simple key replacement into an extraction and repair job. Small symptoms are the inexpensive time to act.
  • Be careful with discount fobs from online marketplaces. A listing may match your remote's shape while using a different frequency, chip or FCC ID, and many used smart keys are locked to their original vehicle. If you already bought one, send us the listing or a photo before the visit so nobody pays for a programming attempt that can't work.
  • Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.

Proof of ownership

Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith make a key for a 2025 Honda Prologue?

New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. New fobs come through a Honda dealer using GM software. We can help with lockouts, emergency blades and coordinating the dealer order. The 2025 Prologue uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.

Is the 2025 Honda Prologue push-to-start?

Yes. The 2025 Prologue uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.

What battery does a 2025 Honda Prologue key use?

Fobs for the 2025 Prologue use a CR2450 coin cell. Replace it when range drops or the car shows a key-battery warning. If the fob still fails with a fresh battery, the board, buttons or programming may be the problem, which we can test on site.

How long does a dealer key for a 2025 Honda Prologue take?

It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
