2024 Dodge Hornet Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2024 Dodge Hornet uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Dodge dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage, cut the emergency blade by code and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

2024 Dodge Hornet Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2024 Dodge Hornet, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Dodge. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

Hornet GT and R/T models use a proximity fob with push-button start, and the fob houses a mechanical emergency blade for the driver's door. The key hardware comes from the same family as the Alfa Romeo Tonale rather than older Dodge parts, so a Durango or Charger fob is not a substitute. Bring your remaining fob if you have one, along with your VIN, so the correct part number can be confirmed before anything is ordered.

What's specific to the 2024 Hornet

The 2024 Dodge Hornet is the second of 3 model years in the Hornet 1st generation (2023–2025), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source. At 2 years old, a 2024 Dodge Hornet is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.

Smart-key cars like the 2024 Hornet can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.

Key options for the 2024 Dodge Hornet

  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Making a new smart key is mostly a programming job. The fob has to match the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip, and then the keyless system must be told to accept it, normally through the OBD-II port. Depending on the platform, that can mean entering a PIN, waiting through a timed security procedure, or on some newer vehicles, using manufacturer online access. When every key is lost, certain models need a module removed and read on the bench. For your Dodge Hornet 1st generation, we'll tell you which of those applies, and if a step is dealer-only, you'll hear it before we drive out. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob is cut by code during the same visit.

How the Dodge immobilizer works on the Hornet

Dodge has used Chrysler's Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) since the late 1990s, but the hardware changed several times, which is why two Dodges a few years apart can need completely different keys. Sentry Key cars and trucks from roughly 2000 to 2005 read a Texas Instruments 4D-64 chip through a ring antenna around the ignition cylinder, and on many trucks, vans and base trims the system was optional, so plenty of those vehicles still run on plain cut keys. Between 2004 and 2006 Chrysler switched to Philips Hitag 2 (ID46) transponders, first in chip keys and remote head keys, then in the Fobik: the bladeless fob that twists in a Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) on Chargers, Challengers, Grand Caravans, Journeys and Ram pickups. Keyless Enter 'n Go adds proximity entry, a dash start button and a radio frequency hub (RFHub). It was optional on many 2008-2014 cars, became standard on the Journey in 2011, and is standard on every Charger and Challenger from 2015. The 2019-2023 Charger and Challenger use Hitag AES fobs, many 2018-and-newer models sit behind FCA's Secure Gateway, and the Hornet and 2024-on Charger add another layer. When the immobilizer rejects a key, the security light flashes and the engine either won't start or dies after a couple of seconds.

  • The Hornet R/T paired a 1.3-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor as a plug-in hybrid.
  • Production in Pomigliano d'Arco, Italy, was suspended in August 2025, and Dodge ended the model after the 2025 model year.

Getting a 2024 Hornet key from the dealer

The Hornet's immobilizer sits behind Stellantis gateway security, and aftermarket programming support for this platform is still thin. In most cases a new fob is ordered by VIN through a Dodge dealer and programmed there after ownership is verified. If you're locked out, we can open the vehicle without damage and help you plan the dealer visit, and we'll tell you whether local tool coverage has caught up when you call.

Hornet fobs are typically ordered and programmed through a Dodge dealer because aftermarket coverage for this platform is limited; we can help with lockouts and planning the dealer visit.

How we help when the key must come from Dodge

Losing every key to a Dodge is usually fixable where the vehicle sits. We verify ownership first with your ID plus the registration or title, then cut a new key from the VIN-based key code or by decoding a door lock, and program it through the OBD-II port after pulling the immobilizer PIN. Fobik and proximity-key vehicles don't need a cut blade to start, so that work is mostly electronic, plus cutting the emergency insert for the door. The exceptions are real: some 2019-2023 Hitag AES cars need the radio frequency hub removed for bench work, Secure Gateway models need authorized access, and the Hornet and 2024-on Charger generally have to go through a Dodge dealer. Some early trucks and vans never had Sentry Key at all, which turns a lost-key call into a cutting job.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Cut an emergency blade. Where the key has a mechanical emergency blade, we can cut one by code so you can lock and unlock the doors while the new key is on order.
  3. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Dodge dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  4. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  5. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2024 Hornet needs a dealer key

Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2024 Hornet is one of them. Dodge generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Dodge models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.

What to bring to the dealer

Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.

While you wait for the new key

While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.

What affects the dealer's price for a Hornet key

Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2024 Hornet, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

Hornet key battery

A fob battery rarely dies all at once. The warning signs build: you have to get closer to the car before the doors respond, the dash shows a key battery or key-not-detected message, or the push-button start only works with the fob held near the button. Inland heat speeds that decline, especially for fobs left in a hot cabin or on the dashboard. Keep a spare replacement at home in a cool drawer, sealed in its original package, and buy from a busy store where stock turns over quickly. A cell that sat on a shelf for years may arrive already partly spent.

Common Dodge key problems

  • Remotes bought online often refuse to pair because they're the wrong frequency, part number or chip version, a common mix-up between older 315 MHz Dodge remotes and 433 MHz Fobiks and proximity fobs.
  • A dead fob battery doesn't have to strand you: Fobiks and smart fobs hide an emergency blade for the driver's door, and Keyless Enter 'n Go models start when you press the start button with the nose of the fob.
  • A Fobik that sticks in the dash slot, won't turn, or won't release on Grand Caravans, Journeys, Chargers and Ram pickups is often a failing Wireless Ignition Node rather than the fob itself, so we test both before replacing anything.
  • Fobik and smart-fob cases split and button pads wear through; a new shell can save the electronics, but a board damaged by water or a hard drop usually needs a new programmed fob.
  • 'Key fob not detected' or no-start messages on Keyless Enter 'n Go Chargers, Challengers and Durangos usually trace to a weak fob battery, a damaged fob, or a failing RF hub module behind the dash.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
  • Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
  • Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.

Proof of ownership

Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith make a key for a 2024 Dodge Hornet?

New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Hornet fobs are typically ordered and programmed through a Dodge dealer because aftermarket coverage for this platform is limited; we can help with lockouts and planning the dealer visit. The 2024 Hornet uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.

Is the 2024 Dodge Hornet push-to-start?

Yes. The 2024 Hornet uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade. The fob also hides a mechanical emergency blade for the doors.

How long does a dealer key for a 2024 Dodge Hornet take?

It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
