2025 Dodge Charger Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2025 Dodge Charger, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Dodge. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The all-new Charger arrived as the battery-electric Charger Daytona, with the first cars badged 2024 and customer deliveries beginning in January 2025, followed by the gasoline Sixpack with a Hurricane six-cylinder engine. Every version uses a proximity fob with push-button start. The key hardware belongs to Stellantis's newest STLA Large platform and doesn't share parts with the 2011-2023 Charger, so an older fob is no help as a spare.

What's specific to the 2025 Charger

The 2025 Dodge Charger is the second of 3 model years in the Charger LB platform (Daytona EV and Sixpack) (2024–2026), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source. At 1 year old, a 2025 Dodge Charger is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.

Smart-key cars like the 2025 Charger can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.

Key options for the 2025 Dodge Charger

  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2025 Dodge Charger open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.

How the Dodge immobilizer works on the Charger

Dodge has used Chrysler's Sentry Key Immobilizer System (SKIS) since the late 1990s, but the hardware changed several times, which is why two Dodges a few years apart can need completely different keys. Sentry Key cars and trucks from roughly 2000 to 2005 read a Texas Instruments 4D-64 chip through a ring antenna around the ignition cylinder, and on many trucks, vans and base trims the system was optional, so plenty of those vehicles still run on plain cut keys. Between 2004 and 2006 Chrysler switched to Philips Hitag 2 (ID46) transponders, first in chip keys and remote head keys, then in the Fobik: the bladeless fob that twists in a Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) on Chargers, Challengers, Grand Caravans, Journeys and Ram pickups. Keyless Enter 'n Go adds proximity entry, a dash start button and a radio frequency hub (RFHub). It was optional on many 2008-2014 cars, became standard on the Journey in 2011, and is standard on every Charger and Challenger from 2015. The 2019-2023 Charger and Challenger use Hitag AES fobs, many 2018-and-newer models sit behind FCA's Secure Gateway, and the Hornet and 2024-on Charger add another layer. When the immobilizer rejects a key, the security light flashes and the engine either won't start or dies after a couple of seconds.

  • The Charger Daytona is Dodge's first battery-electric muscle car; the Sixpack uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six.
  • The LB Charger rides on Stellantis's STLA Large platform, shared with other new-generation Stellantis models.

Getting a 2025 Charger key from the dealer

These cars sit on Stellantis's newest electrical architecture, with gateway security that requires authorized access, and aftermarket tools have only partial coverage so far. For now, a lost or extra fob is usually ordered and programmed through a Dodge dealer using your VIN and ownership documents. We can open the car if you're locked out, and we keep checking tool coverage, so call and we'll tell you whether that has changed.

Aftermarket programming for the new STLA Large Charger is still limited, so replacement fobs come through a Dodge dealer for now. We can still help with lockouts and with planning the dealer visit.

How we help when the key must come from Dodge

Losing every key to a Dodge is usually fixable where the vehicle sits. We verify ownership first with your ID plus the registration or title, then cut a new key from the VIN-based key code or by decoding a door lock, and program it through the OBD-II port after pulling the immobilizer PIN. Fobik and proximity-key vehicles don't need a cut blade to start, so that work is mostly electronic, plus cutting the emergency insert for the door. The exceptions are real: some 2019-2023 Hitag AES cars need the radio frequency hub removed for bench work, Secure Gateway models need authorized access, and the Hornet and 2024-on Charger generally have to go through a Dodge dealer. Some early trucks and vans never had Sentry Key at all, which turns a lost-key call into a cutting job.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Dodge dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2025 Charger needs a dealer key

Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2025 Charger is one of them. Dodge generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Dodge models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.

What to bring to the dealer

Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.

While you wait for the new key

While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.

What affects the dealer's price for a Charger key

Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2025 Charger, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

Charger key battery

Most fobs for a 2025 Dodge Charger open along a small slot in the seam; a coin or a plastic pry tool works better than a screwdriver, which chews up the housing. If the fob hides a mechanical blade, slide it out first, since the case often opens from that gap. Note which side of the old cell faces up, swap in a fresh replacement, and press the halves together until they click all the way around. Handle the new battery by its edges, because skin oil on the faces can hurt contact. In most cases the fob keeps its programming through a battery change, so test lock, unlock and start, and you're done.

Common Dodge key problems

  • A dead fob battery doesn't have to strand you: Fobiks and smart fobs hide an emergency blade for the driver's door, and Keyless Enter 'n Go models start when you press the start button with the nose of the fob.
  • SRT Hellcat owners left with only the black key are limited to reduced engine output; a red key has to be programmed as a red key before the car will deliver full power.
  • 'Key fob not detected' or no-start messages on Keyless Enter 'n Go Chargers, Challengers and Durangos usually trace to a weak fob battery, a damaged fob, or a failing RF hub module behind the dash.
  • A Fobik that sticks in the dash slot, won't turn, or won't release on Grand Caravans, Journeys, Chargers and Ram pickups is often a failing Wireless Ignition Node rather than the fob itself, so we test both before replacing anything.
  • Remotes bought online often refuse to pair because they're the wrong frequency, part number or chip version, a common mix-up between older 315 MHz Dodge remotes and 433 MHz Fobiks and proximity fobs.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • Photograph the back of your fob and any key tag that came with the car. The FCC ID, part number and key code printed there make ordering a replacement faster and more accurate. Store the photos somewhere you can reach from any device, not only on the phone that might go missing along with the keys.
  • Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
  • When a key's head cracks or its blade bends, replace it before it fails. A transponder chip can slip out of a split head, and a bent blade can break off inside the ignition or door lock, turning a simple key replacement into an extraction and repair job. Small symptoms are the inexpensive time to act.

Proof of ownership

Not every situation fits the simple case, so here's how we handle the common exceptions. For a leased or financed vehicle, a registration that lists you as the registered owner or lessee works with your ID. If you just bought the car, bring the signed title or bill of sale along with your ID. For a company or fleet vehicle, we need written authorization from the business plus the driver's ID. If the car belongs to a family member, the registered owner should be present or provide signed permission and a copy of their ID. Rental vehicles go through the rental company.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith make a key for a 2025 Dodge Charger?

New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Aftermarket programming for the new STLA Large Charger is still limited, so replacement fobs come through a Dodge dealer for now. We can still help with lockouts and with planning the dealer visit. The 2025 Charger uses a smart proximity key with push-button start.

Is the 2025 Dodge Charger push-to-start?

Yes. The 2025 Charger uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.

How long does a dealer key for a 2025 Dodge Charger take?

It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
