Cadillac XT6 Key Replacement
Short answer: The XT6 was Cadillac's three-row crossover, built in Spring Hill, Tennessee, from the 2020 through 2025 model years. It shared its underpinnings with the XT5 and offered a V6, with a turbocharged four-cylinder available on some versions. GM ended it after 2025 as the electric Vistiq took its place in the lineup. Every XT6 uses push-button start with a five-button proximity fob. We make XT6 keys for model years 2020–2025. Call (951) 903-3193.

If your 2025 Cadillac XT6 is down to one key, now is the cheapest and easiest time to fix that. Adding a key while a working one is still in your hand is a routine job for us; replacing the last key after it disappears is a bigger one. We come to your home or workplace in Southern California with blanks, remotes and programming equipment for the XT6, cut the new key to match, and register it with the car's immobilizer before we leave. Then we test it: doors, trunk or liftgate, ignition or push-button start, and remote range. Most owners end up with a second key on a separate ring, stored somewhere safe, and one less thing to worry about.
XT6 keys by generation
| Generation | First generation, final year (2025), 2025–2025 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Locksmith support | Spares; some cases need extra steps |
The 2025 XT6 was the final model year. Fobs are five-button proximity units with a mechanical emergency key, and buttons typically cover lock, unlock, power liftgate, remote start and panic. The FCC ID on the back of your fob decides which replacement we order, because earlier XT6 fobs will not necessarily fit. GM's documentation for the 2025 model no longer lists an on-board learn, so new fobs need professional equipment. 2025 XT6 fobs are not learnable on-board, so we use a professional programmer connected through the OBD-II port. Depending on the car's software, the tool may need online authorization from GM. Adding a spare with a working fob is usually possible on site. All-keys-lost is less predictable, and some cases may need the dealer. We check your VIN and fob type before quoting so you know the route ahead of time.
| Generation | First generation (2020-2024), 2020–2024 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Chip | Philips ID46 (Hitag 2 family) |
| Key battery | CR2032 |
| Locksmith support | Full |
XT6 fobs are five-button proximity units, starting with HYQ2EB on early models and moving to HYQ2ES on later ones. Buttons typically cover lock, unlock, power liftgate, remote start and panic. A mechanical emergency key pulls out of the fob for the driver's door cylinder. Because the two fob types are not interchangeable, the FCC ID printed on the back of your fob decides which replacement we order. We add XT6 fobs through the OBD-II port with a professional programmer that waits out GM's security access, and through 2024 the car also has an on-board learn at the driver's door cylinder and console pocket. With two working fobs it is quick. With none, the relearn takes about 30 minutes and erases any fob not present. We cut the emergency key to your door lock first. We confirm your VIN and fob before scheduling.
Cadillac key security
Cadillac has used almost every generation of General Motors theft deterrent since 2000, so the key in your hand depends heavily on the model year. The last Eldorados relied on a resistor pellet in the key blade, which the car reads as a resistance value rather than a code. DeVille, Seville and early CTS cars use PASS-Key III, a transponder chip molded into the key head. Escalades built before 2007 took a different path: Passlock, where the sensor lives in the ignition lock cylinder and the key itself carries no chip. Later turn-key cars moved to PASS-Key III+ with a Philips ID46-family chip, while the XLR in 2004 and the STS in 2005 brought Keyless Access fobs and push-button start to the lineup. Proximity fobs then spread across nearly every model, and many of them can be learned on-board in about 30 minutes. Starting with the 2020 CT4 and CT5 and the 2021 Escalade, GM's Global B electrical architecture brought Hitag Pro fobs and encrypted programming, and newer cars increasingly need a professional programmer. The Ultium electric models, from the Lyriq onward, add another layer. Before we quote, we confirm the year, model and key style so you know exactly what the job involves.
Most turn-key and proximity Cadillacs from 2006 through about 2024 can be programmed through the OBD-II port with a professional key tool, and many also have a built-in learn procedure. GM builds a security wait into both routes, usually three timed periods of about 10 minutes each, before the module accepts a new key. PASS-Key III sedans can learn an added key on-board when a working key is present. Separate remotes on the DTS and 2007-2014 Escalade usually pair through the Driver Information Center. Keyless Access cars such as the STS, SRX, CTS and ATS use a door-cylinder learn and a console pocket that reads the fob, while the XLR uses a rear-fascia cylinder and a glove box pocket. Early CT4, CT5 and Escalade Global B cars can add a fob from a menu if two working fobs are present, and newer cars and every lost-key job call for a professional programmer with GM authorization. Every Cadillac fob with an emergency blade also needs that blade cut to match your door lock.
All XT6 keys lost
Losing every key to a Cadillac is usually fixable where the car sits, but the path depends on the system. On Passlock Escalades and pellet-key Eldorados it is mostly a mechanical job: we cut a key to your locks or by code, then match the pellet value or let the truck relearn. PASS-Key III and later transponder cars need a new key plus a relearn that erases the missing keys. Proximity-fob models need a new fob, an emergency blade cut to your door lock, and a learn session with security waits, done on-board or through the OBD-II port. For newer Escalades, the CT4, CT5, the 2025 XT crossovers and the Ultium EVs, all-keys-lost can require dealer involvement. In every case we verify your ID and proof of ownership, such as registration or title, before we make a key.
- Gather your documents and the VIN. Call with the year, make, model and VIN if you can read it through the windshield, plus where the car is parked. Those details let us confirm whether your Cadillac XT6 can be done on-site and bring the right key, so the first trip is the only trip.
- Get into the vehicle without damage. If the car is locked, we open it with non-destructive tools such as an inflatable wedge and a long-reach rod, or by picking the door lock. Some vehicles need a careful approach to avoid triggering the alarm, which can interfere with programming later.
- Originate a new key from the car. With no key to copy, the cuts come from the vehicle itself. We retrieve the key code through manufacturer channels where possible, or decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool. Then we cut the blade on our code machine and confirm it turns the lock smoothly.
- Program the key to the immobilizer. Next, the new key is introduced to the car's security system. Many vehicles allow this through the OBD-II port with a PIN or security procedure. Some all-keys-lost cases require reading a module on the bench, and a few platforms only allow dealer programming, which we'll tell you up front.
- Erase missing keys and add a spare. A lost key's metal blade can still open your doors even after its chip is erased. If the keys disappeared along with something showing where you live or park, consider rekeying the car's door lock cylinders too. We'll also recommend leaving with two working keys, not one.
Dealer or mobile locksmith?
Dealers have one clear advantage: direct access to the manufacturer's own systems. Some newer vehicles tie key programming to online authorization that only a dealer can use, and certain all-keys-lost situations on specific platforms still require it. A good locksmith knows where those lines are. Where we can do the job, we use professional programming equipment that talks to the same immobilizer and keyless systems through the OBD-II port, and in many cases the result is identical: a properly registered key that starts the car. Where we can't, we can often still help by opening the vehicle, cutting a mechanical blade from code, or helping you gather what the dealer will ask for so that visit goes smoothly. For your Cadillac XT6, ask us directly and you'll get a plain answer.
How the job works
- Identify the exact key your XT6 uses. Every job starts with the VIN, the trim and a look at any key you still have. From those we confirm the keyway, the transponder or smart-key chip, the remote frequency, the FCC ID and the button layout. Two Cadillac XT6 keys that look identical can carry different electronics, so this step keeps the wrong part from ever reaching the car.
- Verify ownership before any work. California holds licensed locksmiths responsible for knowing whose car they're making keys for. We record your name, the VIN and the plate on a work order. If you aren't the registered owner, you'll need the owner's written authorization along with your own photo ID before we begin.
- Get the key code or decode the lock. If you still have a working key, we can read its cuts directly and check them against the factory depths for the Cadillac keyway. A worn key gets corrected back to spec during this step, so the new key turns crisply instead of reproducing years of wear in a fresh piece of metal.
- Cut the blade on-site. Cutting happens right beside your car. For a smart key, that means the emergency blade hidden inside the fob; for a transponder or remote-head key, it's the main blade you'll use every day. We deburr the cuts and check the fit in each lock so nothing binds or sticks later on.
- Program the chip, remote or smart key. Programming tells the car's computers that the new key belongs to the vehicle. Transponder chips are added to the immobilizer, remote buttons to the body control module, and proximity fobs to the keyless system. If a step requires dealer-only access on your XT6, you'll have heard that before we arrived, not halfway through the job.
- Test everything and clear out old keys. The last step is a short walkthrough. We show you how many keys the car now recognizes, point out the dead-fob start method for your vehicle, and hand you an itemized receipt. If a spare makes sense, it's simplest to add it during this same visit while the equipment is already connected.
What affects the price of an XT6 key
- The type of key. The biggest factor is technology. A plain mechanical key is a cutting job only. A transponder key adds a chip and programming. Remote-head and flip keys add a circuit board, and a proximity fob for a push-button Cadillac XT6 is the most involved of all, both in the part itself and in the programming.
- All keys lost or adding a key. On some vehicles, losing the last key changes the programming entirely, from a quick add-key procedure to a full immobilizer reset or a module read on the bench. That extra labor shows up in the price, and it's the strongest argument for keeping a spare in the house.
- Programming complexity and security access. Some immobilizers accept a new key with a few on-board steps. Others need a PIN code, a timed security wait, manufacturer online access, or removing a module to read its data. Every extra layer of security on the Cadillac system adds equipment time and labor to the job.
- Travel, timing and extra repairs. Sometimes a key problem is really a lock problem: an ignition that won't turn even with the right key, or a door cylinder that has been jammed for years. Fixing those is separate work. We point them out, explain the options, and quote the whole job up front so the bill holds no surprises.
XT6 key types explained
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2025 Cadillac XT6 open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
Why a spare key pays for itself
- Some vehicles make it hard to add a key once you're down to one. Certain immobilizer systems let an owner program an extra key on-board only when two working keys are present, so a second key preserves the easy options for later and avoids a full reset.
- Electronics fail without warning. A fob dropped on concrete, run through the washing machine or soaked at the pool can quit for good. With a second programmed key, that's an annoyance you fix on your own schedule, not a stranded car that needs attention today.
- A spare turns a future all-keys-lost emergency into a simple add-a-key job. With one working key in hand, programming is quicker, and the chip or fob can often be paired without decoding locks or reading modules, which keeps the cost of a lost key far lower.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.
- When a key's head cracks or its blade bends, replace it before it fails. A transponder chip can slip out of a split head, and a bent blade can break off inside the ignition or door lock, turning a simple key replacement into an extraction and repair job. Small symptoms are the inexpensive time to act.
- Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
- Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
Common Cadillac key problems
- A flashing security light and a crank-no-start on a 2002-2006 Escalade often points to a failing Passlock sensor in the ignition cylinder rather than the key. A relearn may bring it back for a while, but the sensor or cylinder usually needs repair.
- PASS-Key III keys on DeVille and Seville sedans wear at the blade and crack at the head, which can expose or loosen the chip. A key that starts the car only some of the time is a good reason to have a spare made now.
- Cadillac proximity fobs usually show a low-battery or remote-not-detected message on the Driver Information Center well before they quit. Replacing the coin cell at the first warning avoids a no-start in a parking lot.
- When a fob battery dies completely, many push-button Cadillacs will still start with the fob held in the backup pocket or spot shown in the owner's manual. Many owners never look for it until the day they need it.
- High-mileage DTS and DeVille sedans develop worn ignition cylinders that make the key stick or refuse to turn. Copying a worn key copies the wear, so we prefer to cut a fresh key by code.
- Separate remotes on 2007-2014 Escalades and DTS sedans often fail at the case and buttons before the electronics. A cracked shell or worn rubber pad can sometimes be fixed by moving the circuit board into a new housing.
- CT4, CT5 and 2021-and-later Escalade fobs use encrypted Global B programming, so a bargain fob bought online may never program. Match the FCC ID, frequency and part number on your current fob before buying anything.
- Aftermarket remote starters on older Cadillacs often rely on a bypass module wired into the key system. When that module fails, the car can act as if the correct key is wrong, which looks like a key problem but is not.
Proof of ownership
Before we cut or program a key for any vehicle, we verify that you have the right to it. Please have two things ready: the current registration or the title, and a government-issued photo ID with a matching name. We also check that the VIN on those documents matches the VIN plate on the dashboard. If the registration is locked inside the car, that's fine; we open the vehicle first, check the paperwork in the glove box, and only then make the key. If something doesn't line up, we stop and sort it out before any key is made.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my XT6 crank but not start with a newly cut key?
That pattern points to the immobilizer, not the engine. The blade is cut correctly, so the ignition turns, but the car doesn't recognize the chip and blocks fuel or spark. A flashing security light usually confirms it. The key either wasn't programmed, carries the wrong chip type, or is an unprogrammed copy from a hardware store. Programming a correct key to your 2025 Cadillac XT6 resolves it.
Do you come to Southern California to make car keys, or do I bring the car to you?
We come to you. Julian's Locksmith is a mobile-only service, so the van drives to wherever the car is parked in Southern California: your driveway, an apartment lot, a workplace or a shopping center. That matters most when every key is lost, because it saves you a tow. Just make sure we'll have room to work beside the driver's door and that the vehicle is accessible when we arrive.
When can you come out to Southern California for a car key?
We work every day from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., weekends included. Weekends are included. Call (951) 903-3193 and we'll give you an honest ETA to Southern California based on where we are at the time. If you're stuck outside our hours, it's usually smarter to leave the car parked and locked, get home safely, and call when we open than to pay for an overnight tow.
What do I need to show before you make a key for my XT6?
A current registration or title and a government-issued photo ID in the same name. We match the VIN on the paperwork with the one on the dashboard before any cutting or programming. If you're not the registered owner, bring the owner's written authorization and a copy of their ID. If the documents are locked in the car, we'll open it first and check them there.
Can you make an XT6 key from the VIN alone?
The VIN is a starting point, not a finished key. For many vehicles, the factory key code can be obtained from the VIN through manufacturer channels once ownership is verified, which lets us cut a blade that matches your locks. The chip or fob still has to be programmed at the vehicle, so we need access to the car itself. Where no code is available, we decode a lock instead.
