2024 BMW X5 Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2024 BMW X5 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system. New keys for it generally come from the BMW dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2024 BMW X5, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through BMW. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The facelifted X5, built from spring 2023 as a 2024 model, moved to BMW's newer body controller platform along with its curved-display dashboard. It keeps a smart fob for keyless entry and start and supports BMW Digital Key on compatible phones through the My BMW app. The xDrive40i, xDrive50e plug-in, M60i and X5 M share this system. Fobs from a 2019-2023 X5 are not compatible, because keys are now tied to the new controller.
What's specific to the 2024 X5
2024 was the first model year of the X5 G05 LCI (fourth generation, facelift). Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2024 BMW X5 we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything. The key style carried over from the previous generation, but immobilizer data and part numbers can still differ, so a key from a 2023 is not a safe substitute.
At 2 years old, a 2024 BMW X5 is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob. Smart-key cars like the 2024 X5 can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.
Key options for the 2024 BMW X5
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2024 BMW X5 open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
- Phone as key. A phone key turns your smartphone into the vehicle's key through the manufacturer's app or a digital wallet. On a 2024 BMW X5 that supports it, the car may use Bluetooth Low Energy to sense the phone as you walk up, NFC for a deliberate tap at the door or console, and, on newer systems, ultra-wideband radio to pinpoint exactly where the phone is. Setting one up runs through the owner's account and usually requires a key the car already trusts. That account link is what makes phone keys convenient, and it's also why no locksmith can create one from the diagnostic port the way we program a fob.
How the BMW immobilizer works on the X5
BMW has changed its key technology roughly once a decade, so the build date tells us more about the job than the badge on the trunk. In 2000, the 3, 5 and 7 Series, the X5 and the Z3 all used the EWS immobilizer: a diamond-shaped remote key with a Philips ID44-family transponder, checked by an EWS module that trades a rolling code with the engine computer. The key blade is a two-track or four-track design depending on the model. The 2002 7 Series introduced the Car Access System (CAS), and over the next decade CAS2, CAS3 and CAS3+ spread across the lineup with a rectangular fob that slides into a dash slot before you press Start/Stop. F-series cars from 2009 dropped the slot for Hitag Pro (ID49) smart fobs, stored in a CAS4 module on the 5, 6 and 7 Series and X3, and in a front electronic module (FEM) or body domain controller (BDC) on the 2, 3 and 4 Series, X5 and i3. G-series models from 2016 kept the BDC idea and, from mid-2020 builds, added BMW Digital Key for phones. The newest electronics, found on the current 7 and 5 Series, the electric i models and several recent redesigns and facelifts, are still dealer territory for new keys.
- The facelift moved the X5 to BMW's newer body controller family, the same one used in the iX and XM.
- BMW dealers typically order a VIN-coded fob from BMW's central supply, so a replacement can take several days.
- A phone key set up in the My BMW app is a useful backup, but it doesn't replace having two physical fobs.
Getting a 2024 X5 key from the dealer
Fobs for the facelifted X5 are programmed by BMW dealers, which register new keys online against the car's body controller. Aftermarket programmers do not dependably cover this platform yet, so we don't program its fobs. We can open the truck if you're locked out, confirm which keys and phone keys you still have, and help you get your ID and registration in order for the dealer.
New fobs for the 2024 and newer X5 come from BMW dealers. We handle lockouts and help you prepare for the dealer visit.
How we help when the key must come from BMW
With every key gone, most BMWs built before the newest electronics can still be keyed where they sit. We verify your ID and proof of ownership first. Then we get a working blade: on EWS cars that means cutting a key by code or by decoding the driver's door lock, and on slot-key and smart-fob cars it means cutting the emergency blade so the door opens mechanically. Next, we read the immobilizer module, through OBD-II where possible and on the bench where not, collect the engine computer's ISN when the system calls for it, and write new keys into the car. The lost keys are deleted so they can no longer start it. For models on BMW's newest platform, and some late body-module software, the dealer is the only route, and we'll tell you so before any work begins.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the BMW dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2024 X5 needs a dealer key
Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2024 X5 is one of them. BMW generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older BMW models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.
What to bring to the dealer
Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.
While you wait for the new key
Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.
What affects the dealer's price for an X5 key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2024 X5, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
X5 key battery
If a new replacement doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.
Common BMW key problems
- Diamond-shaped remote keys on EWS-era BMWs recharge their cell only while the key sits in the ignition. A spare left in a drawer for months often loses its buttons, yet it still starts the car because the transponder needs no battery.
- Inland Empire summer heat shortens coin-cell life and can warp older key shells. Keep the spare indoors instead of in a hot glovebox, and replace a fob battery at the first sign of reduced range.
- Comfort Access lets the fob stay in your pocket, but it also exposes the car to relay theft. Storing keys away from the front door, or in a signal-blocking pouch, lowers that risk on smart-key BMWs.
- Installing a used engine computer or immobilizer module leaves a BMW that cranks but won't run. The two modules share a secret code, so the replacement has to be synchronized or adapted to the car first.
- A weak 12-volt battery can make a healthy key look dead: the locks ignore the remote, Start/Stop does nothing and warnings pile up on the dash. Charge or test the battery before blaming the fob or the body module.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
- Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2024 BMW X5?
New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. New fobs for the 2024 and newer X5 come from BMW dealers. We handle lockouts and help you prepare for the dealer visit. The 2024 X5 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system.
Is the 2024 BMW X5 push-to-start?
Yes. The 2024 X5 uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.
How long does a dealer key for a 2024 BMW X5 take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
