2025 BMW M5 Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2025 BMW M5 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system. New keys for it generally come from the BMW dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

2025 BMW M5 Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2025 BMW M5, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through BMW. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The G90 M5 arrived for 2025 as a plug-in hybrid sedan, and the M5 Touring wagon, a first for the US M5, joined it. Both run on BMW's newest electronics, start with a smart fob in the cabin and support BMW Digital Key on compatible phones. Fobs from earlier M5s are different parts and cannot be reused, so every replacement is ordered by VIN and registered to the car.

What's specific to the 2025 M5

2025 was the first model year of the M5 G90 sedan and G99 Touring. Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2025 BMW M5 we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything. The key style carried over from the previous generation, but immobilizer data and part numbers can still differ, so a key from a 2023 is not a safe substitute.

At 1 year old, a 2025 BMW M5 is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob. Smart-key cars like the 2025 M5 can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.

Key options for the 2025 BMW M5

  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Proximity keys bring a security trade-off worth understanding. Because the fob is always listening, thieves with relay equipment can stretch its signal from inside your house to the car in the driveway. Keeping the fob away from exterior walls, or in a signal-blocking pouch, closes that gap, and some fobs offer a sleep mode described in the owner's manual. If a smart key for your 2025 BMW M5 is lost or stolen, programming a replacement is the moment to delete the missing fob from the car's memory. And be wary of used fobs from online sellers: a lot of them are locked to the vehicle they came from and can't be reprogrammed to yours.
  • Phone as key. Phone keys fail in ordinary ways: a dead battery, an app that logs you out after an update, Bluetooth switched off, or a new phone that hasn't been set up yet. That's why every vehicle with a phone key, including a BMW M5, should have a working physical backup, whether that's a key card, a fob or a keypad code. Some phones keep a power reserve that lets the wallet key work for a while after the screen goes dark, but don't count on it in a parking garage. Where your platform allows a locksmith to program a backup fob or card, we can do that on-site; where it doesn't, we'll explain the dealer path.

How the BMW immobilizer works on the M5

BMW has changed its key technology roughly once a decade, so the build date tells us more about the job than the badge on the trunk. In 2000, the 3, 5 and 7 Series, the X5 and the Z3 all used the EWS immobilizer: a diamond-shaped remote key with a Philips ID44-family transponder, checked by an EWS module that trades a rolling code with the engine computer. The key blade is a two-track or four-track design depending on the model. The 2002 7 Series introduced the Car Access System (CAS), and over the next decade CAS2, CAS3 and CAS3+ spread across the lineup with a rectangular fob that slides into a dash slot before you press Start/Stop. F-series cars from 2009 dropped the slot for Hitag Pro (ID49) smart fobs, stored in a CAS4 module on the 5, 6 and 7 Series and X3, and in a front electronic module (FEM) or body domain controller (BDC) on the 2, 3 and 4 Series, X5 and i3. G-series models from 2016 kept the BDC idea and, from mid-2020 builds, added BMW Digital Key for phones. The newest electronics, found on the current 7 and 5 Series, the electric i models and several recent redesigns and facelifts, are still dealer territory for new keys.

  • The G90 M5 pairs a V8 with an electric motor, and its key system matches the current G60 5 Series.
  • A phone key shared through the My BMW app is a useful stopgap while a dealer fob is on order.

Getting a 2025 M5 key from the dealer

Fobs for the G90 M5 and M5 Touring are programmed by BMW dealers, which register each key through BMW's online systems. Aftermarket programmers do not dependably cover these cars yet, so we do not program their fobs. We can open the car in a lockout, check which fobs and phone keys still work, and help you gather the ID and registration the dealer will ask to see.

New fobs for 2025 and newer M5s come from BMW dealers. We handle lockouts and help you prepare for the dealer visit.

How we help when the key must come from BMW

With every key gone, most BMWs built before the newest electronics can still be keyed where they sit. We verify your ID and proof of ownership first. Then we get a working blade: on EWS cars that means cutting a key by code or by decoding the driver's door lock, and on slot-key and smart-fob cars it means cutting the emergency blade so the door opens mechanically. Next, we read the immobilizer module, through OBD-II where possible and on the bench where not, collect the engine computer's ISN when the system calls for it, and write new keys into the car. The lost keys are deleted so they can no longer start it. For models on BMW's newest platform, and some late body-module software, the dealer is the only route, and we'll tell you so before any work begins.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the BMW dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2025 M5 needs a dealer key

Why can't a mobile locksmith simply program a new key for a 2025 M5? Because the newest security architectures keep the secret part of the process at BMW. The car will only accept a key whose encrypted data was issued for its VIN, and that data comes from the manufacturer through the dealer's parts and service systems. Some owners are told otherwise online; we'd rather tell you plainly before anyone drives out.

What to bring to the dealer

Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.

While you wait for the new key

While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.

What affects the dealer's price for an M5 key

Expect the dealer's quote to include the key itself, a programming or setup charge, and sometimes a separate charge for cutting an emergency blade. If every key is lost, add the cost of getting the car to the dealership. Comparing two dealers is worth a phone call; programming charges vary more than the price of the key.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2025 M5, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

M5 key battery

Most fobs for a 2025 BMW M5 open along a small slot in the seam; a coin or a plastic pry tool works better than a screwdriver, which chews up the housing. If the fob hides a mechanical blade, slide it out first, since the case often opens from that gap. Note which side of the old cell faces up, swap in a fresh replacement, and press the halves together until they click all the way around. Handle the new battery by its edges, because skin oil on the faces can hurt contact. In most cases the fob keeps its programming through a battery change, so test lock, unlock and start, and you're done.

Common BMW key problems

  • Comfort Access lets the fob stay in your pocket, but it also exposes the car to relay theft. Storing keys away from the front door, or in a signal-blocking pouch, lowers that risk on smart-key BMWs.
  • On slot-key BMWs from roughly 2002 to 2013, a fob the dash won't accept or recognize points to either a failing key or a faulty slot. Trying your spare first tells you which side has the problem before parts are ordered.
  • Used BMW fobs from online sellers are locked to the car they came from. Some can be professionally renewed and recoded, many cannot, so send us the part number and FCC ID before you buy one.
  • Installing a used engine computer or immobilizer module leaves a BMW that cranks but won't run. The two modules share a secret code, so the replacement has to be synchronized or adapted to the car first.
  • Smart fobs announce a weak coin cell with shorter range or a key-not-detected message at startup. Every model has a backup spot, shown in the owner's manual, where holding the fob lets the car read it and start anyway.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
  • Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
  • Photograph the back of your fob and any key tag that came with the car. The FCC ID, part number and key code printed there make ordering a replacement faster and more accurate. Store the photos somewhere you can reach from any device, not only on the phone that might go missing along with the keys.

Proof of ownership

Before we cut or program a key for any vehicle, we verify that you have the right to it. Please have two things ready: the current registration or the title, and a government-issued photo ID with a matching name. We also check that the VIN on those documents matches the VIN plate on the dashboard. If the registration is locked inside the car, that's fine; we open the vehicle first, check the paperwork in the glove box, and only then make the key. If something doesn't line up, we stop and sort it out before any key is made.
