2024 BMW iX Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2024 BMW iX uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system. New keys for it generally come from the BMW dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

2024 BMW iX Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2024 BMW iX, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through BMW. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

There is no key slot or ignition cylinder in an iX. The car recognizes an authorized smart fob inside the cabin and is ready to drive with keyless start. It also supports BMW Digital Key Plus, which uses ultra-wideband radio so a compatible phone can open and start the car from your pocket once it is set up in the My BMW app. The 2026 facelift kept the same approach. A phone key depends on the owner's account and phone, so it is not a replacement for a second physical fob.

What's specific to the 2024 iX

The 2024 BMW iX is the third of 5 model years in the iX I20 (first generation) (2022–2026), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source.

At 2 years old, a 2024 BMW iX is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.

Key options for the 2024 BMW iX

  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Making a new smart key is mostly a programming job. The fob has to match the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip, and then the keyless system must be told to accept it, normally through the OBD-II port. Depending on the platform, that can mean entering a PIN, waiting through a timed security procedure, or on some newer vehicles, using manufacturer online access. When every key is lost, certain models need a module removed and read on the bench. For your BMW iX I20 (first generation), we'll tell you which of those applies, and if a step is dealer-only, you'll hear it before we drive out. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob is cut by code during the same visit.
  • Phone as key. Phone keys fail in ordinary ways: a dead battery, an app that logs you out after an update, Bluetooth switched off, or a new phone that hasn't been set up yet. That's why every vehicle with a phone key, including a BMW iX, should have a working physical backup, whether that's a key card, a fob or a keypad code. Some phones keep a power reserve that lets the wallet key work for a while after the screen goes dark, but don't count on it in a parking garage. Where your platform allows a locksmith to program a backup fob or card, we can do that on-site; where it doesn't, we'll explain the dealer path.

How the BMW immobilizer works on the iX

BMW has changed its key technology roughly once a decade, so the build date tells us more about the job than the badge on the trunk. In 2000, the 3, 5 and 7 Series, the X5 and the Z3 all used the EWS immobilizer: a diamond-shaped remote key with a Philips ID44-family transponder, checked by an EWS module that trades a rolling code with the engine computer. The key blade is a two-track or four-track design depending on the model. The 2002 7 Series introduced the Car Access System (CAS), and over the next decade CAS2, CAS3 and CAS3+ spread across the lineup with a rectangular fob that slides into a dash slot before you press Start/Stop. F-series cars from 2009 dropped the slot for Hitag Pro (ID49) smart fobs, stored in a CAS4 module on the 5, 6 and 7 Series and X3, and in a front electronic module (FEM) or body domain controller (BDC) on the 2, 3 and 4 Series, X5 and i3. G-series models from 2016 kept the BDC idea and, from mid-2020 builds, added BMW Digital Key for phones. The newest electronics, found on the current 7 and 5 Series, the electric i models and several recent redesigns and facelifts, are still dealer territory for new keys.

  • The iX was BMW's first model with Digital Key Plus, which uses ultra-wideband radio for hands-free phone entry.
  • Phone keys are tied to the owner's BMW account, so extra drivers are added through the app rather than by copying a fob.
  • BMW released the facelifted iX in early 2025 as a 2026 model, with more range and power.

Getting a 2024 iX key from the dealer

New iX fobs are added by a BMW dealer, which connects to BMW's servers to register the key with the car's body controller. Aftermarket key programmers do not reliably cover this platform yet, so we do not program fobs for the iX. What we can do is open the car if you are locked out, help you confirm which keys you have, and get your ownership documents ready for the dealer. Digital keys are managed and shared through the My BMW app.

Fobs for the iX are programmed by BMW dealers. We can open a locked iX and help you prepare for the dealer visit.

How we help when the key must come from BMW

With every key gone, most BMWs built before the newest electronics can still be keyed where they sit. We verify your ID and proof of ownership first. Then we get a working blade: on EWS cars that means cutting a key by code or by decoding the driver's door lock, and on slot-key and smart-fob cars it means cutting the emergency blade so the door opens mechanically. Next, we read the immobilizer module, through OBD-II where possible and on the bench where not, collect the engine computer's ISN when the system calls for it, and write new keys into the car. The lost keys are deleted so they can no longer start it. For models on BMW's newest platform, and some late body-module software, the dealer is the only route, and we'll tell you so before any work begins.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the BMW dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2024 iX needs a dealer key

Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2024 iX is one of them. BMW generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older BMW models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.

What to bring to the dealer

Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.

While you wait for the new key

Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.

What affects the dealer's price for an iX key

Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2024 iX, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

iX key battery

If a new replacement doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.

Common BMW key problems

  • Installing a used engine computer or immobilizer module leaves a BMW that cranks but won't run. The two modules share a secret code, so the replacement has to be synchronized or adapted to the car first.
  • On slot-key BMWs from roughly 2002 to 2013, a fob the dash won't accept or recognize points to either a failing key or a faulty slot. Trying your spare first tells you which side has the problem before parts are ordered.
  • A weak 12-volt battery can make a healthy key look dead: the locks ignore the remote, Start/Stop does nothing and warnings pile up on the dash. Charge or test the battery before blaming the fob or the body module.
  • Inland Empire summer heat shortens coin-cell life and can warp older key shells. Keep the spare indoors instead of in a hot glovebox, and replace a fob battery at the first sign of reduced range.
  • Comfort Access lets the fob stay in your pocket, but it also exposes the car to relay theft. Storing keys away from the front door, or in a signal-blocking pouch, lowers that risk on smart-key BMWs.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
  • Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
  • When a key's head cracks or its blade bends, replace it before it fails. A transponder chip can slip out of a split head, and a bent blade can break off inside the ignition or door lock, turning a simple key replacement into an extraction and repair job. Small symptoms are the inexpensive time to act.

Proof of ownership

Before we cut or program a key for any vehicle, we verify that you have the right to it. Please have two things ready: the current registration or the title, and a government-issued photo ID with a matching name. We also check that the VIN on those documents matches the VIN plate on the dashboard. If the registration is locked inside the car, that's fine; we open the vehicle first, check the paperwork in the glove box, and only then make the key. If something doesn't line up, we stop and sort it out before any key is made.

Frequently asked questions

Can a locksmith make a key for a 2024 BMW iX?

New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. Fobs for the iX are programmed by BMW dealers. We can open a locked iX and help you prepare for the dealer visit. The 2024 iX uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system.

Is the 2024 BMW iX push-to-start?

Yes. The 2024 iX uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.

How long does a dealer key for a 2024 BMW iX take?

It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
