2024 BMW i7 Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2024 BMW i7 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system. New keys for it generally come from the BMW dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2024 BMW i7, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through BMW. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start); Phone as key |
| Locksmith support | Dealer key required |
Every i7 starts with BMW's newest smart fob in the cabin and a press of Start/Stop, and it supports BMW Digital Key on compatible phones through the My BMW app. Comfort Access lets the doors open with the fob still in a pocket. The xDrive60, M70 xDrive and eDrive50 share one key system with the 740i and 760i, so a 7 Series fob from 2022 or earlier is a different part that can't be reused or recoded for an i7.
What's specific to the 2024 i7
The 2024 BMW i7 is the second of 4 model years in the i7 G70 (first generation) (2023–2026), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source.
At 2 years old, a 2024 BMW i7 is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.
Key options for the 2024 BMW i7
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2024 BMW i7 open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
- Phone as key. A phone key turns your smartphone into the vehicle's key through the manufacturer's app or a digital wallet. On a 2024 BMW i7 that supports it, the car may use Bluetooth Low Energy to sense the phone as you walk up, NFC for a deliberate tap at the door or console, and, on newer systems, ultra-wideband radio to pinpoint exactly where the phone is. Setting one up runs through the owner's account and usually requires a key the car already trusts. That account link is what makes phone keys convenient, and it's also why no locksmith can create one from the diagnostic port the way we program a fob.
How the BMW immobilizer works on the i7
BMW has changed its key technology roughly once a decade, so the build date tells us more about the job than the badge on the trunk. In 2000, the 3, 5 and 7 Series, the X5 and the Z3 all used the EWS immobilizer: a diamond-shaped remote key with a Philips ID44-family transponder, checked by an EWS module that trades a rolling code with the engine computer. The key blade is a two-track or four-track design depending on the model. The 2002 7 Series introduced the Car Access System (CAS), and over the next decade CAS2, CAS3 and CAS3+ spread across the lineup with a rectangular fob that slides into a dash slot before you press Start/Stop. F-series cars from 2009 dropped the slot for Hitag Pro (ID49) smart fobs, stored in a CAS4 module on the 5, 6 and 7 Series and X3, and in a front electronic module (FEM) or body domain controller (BDC) on the 2, 3 and 4 Series, X5 and i3. G-series models from 2016 kept the BDC idea and, from mid-2020 builds, added BMW Digital Key for phones. The newest electronics, found on the current 7 and 5 Series, the electric i models and several recent redesigns and facelifts, are still dealer territory for new keys.
- The i7 and the gasoline 7 Series are built on the same line at BMW's Dingolfing plant.
- Because a dealer fob is ordered coded to your VIN, keeping two working fobs avoids a wait if one goes missing.
- Fobs from the G11 and G12 7 Series cannot be adapted to the i7's newer body controller.
Getting a 2024 i7 key from the dealer
New i7 keys go through BMW dealers, which code each fob to the car and register it through BMW's online systems. Current aftermarket equipment does not dependably cover this platform, so we don't program i7 fobs. We can open the car during a lockout, confirm which fobs and phone keys still work, and help you put together the ownership documents the dealer will ask for.
New i7 fobs come from BMW dealers. We help with lockouts and with getting your paperwork ready for the dealer.
How we help when the key must come from BMW
With every key gone, most BMWs built before the newest electronics can still be keyed where they sit. We verify your ID and proof of ownership first. Then we get a working blade: on EWS cars that means cutting a key by code or by decoding the driver's door lock, and on slot-key and smart-fob cars it means cutting the emergency blade so the door opens mechanically. Next, we read the immobilizer module, through OBD-II where possible and on the bench where not, collect the engine computer's ISN when the system calls for it, and write new keys into the car. The lost keys are deleted so they can no longer start it. For models on BMW's newest platform, and some late body-module software, the dealer is the only route, and we'll tell you so before any work begins.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the BMW dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2024 i7 needs a dealer key
Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2024 i7 is one of them. BMW generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older BMW models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.
What to bring to the dealer
Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.
While you wait for the new key
While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.
What affects the dealer's price for an i7 key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2024 i7, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
i7 key battery
Most fobs for a 2024 BMW i7 open along a small slot in the seam; a coin or a plastic pry tool works better than a screwdriver, which chews up the housing. If the fob hides a mechanical blade, slide it out first, since the case often opens from that gap. Note which side of the old cell faces up, swap in a fresh replacement, and press the halves together until they click all the way around. Handle the new battery by its edges, because skin oil on the faces can hurt contact. In most cases the fob keeps its programming through a battery change, so test lock, unlock and start, and you're done.
Common BMW key problems
- Inland Empire summer heat shortens coin-cell life and can warp older key shells. Keep the spare indoors instead of in a hot glovebox, and replace a fob battery at the first sign of reduced range.
- A weak 12-volt battery can make a healthy key look dead: the locks ignore the remote, Start/Stop does nothing and warnings pile up on the dash. Charge or test the battery before blaming the fob or the body module.
- Installing a used engine computer or immobilizer module leaves a BMW that cranks but won't run. The two modules share a secret code, so the replacement has to be synchronized or adapted to the car first.
- On slot-key BMWs from roughly 2002 to 2013, a fob the dash won't accept or recognize points to either a failing key or a faulty slot. Trying your spare first tells you which side has the problem before parts are ordered.
- Diamond-shaped remote keys on EWS-era BMWs recharge their cell only while the key sits in the ignition. A spare left in a drawer for months often loses its buttons, yet it still starts the car because the transponder needs no battery.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Photograph the back of your fob and any key tag that came with the car. The FCC ID, part number and key code printed there make ordering a replacement faster and more accurate. Store the photos somewhere you can reach from any device, not only on the phone that might go missing along with the keys.
- Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
Proof of ownership
Not every situation fits the simple case, so here's how we handle the common exceptions. For a leased or financed vehicle, a registration that lists you as the registered owner or lessee works with your ID. If you just bought the car, bring the signed title or bill of sale along with your ID. For a company or fleet vehicle, we need written authorization from the business plus the driver's ID. If the car belongs to a family member, the registered owner should be present or provide signed permission and a copy of their ID. Rental vehicles go through the rental company.

Frequently asked questions
Can a locksmith make a key for a 2024 BMW i7?
New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. New i7 fobs come from BMW dealers. We help with lockouts and with getting your paperwork ready for the dealer. The 2024 i7 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system.
Is the 2024 BMW i7 push-to-start?
Yes. The 2024 i7 uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.
How long does a dealer key for a 2024 BMW i7 take?
It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
