2022 BMW i4 Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2022 BMW i4 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system. New keys for it generally come from the BMW dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2022 BMW i4, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through BMW. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

Every i4 starts with a smart fob anywhere in the cabin and a press of the Start/Stop button. Comfort Access, where fitted, opens the doors with the fob still in a pocket. BMW Digital Key turns a compatible phone into a key, and it can be shared with other drivers through the My BMW app. All versions, from the eDrive35 to the M performance models, share one key system, and replacement fobs are ordered to match the VIN because each one is registered to a single car.
What's specific to the 2022 i4
2022 was the first model year of the i4 G26 (first generation). Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2022 BMW i4 we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything. A 2022 BMW i4 is about 4 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Smart-key cars like the 2022 i4 can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.
Key options for the 2022 BMW i4
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2022 BMW i4 open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
- Phone as key. Digital keys make sharing easy, and that's the part to manage carefully. Most systems let the owner send limited guest keys to family members and revoke them from the app. If a phone is lost or stolen, remove its key from your account right away and use your phone maker's tools to lock or erase the device; that's faster than any visit from us. When you buy a used 2022 BMW i4 with phone-key capability, ask the seller to remove their account from the vehicle and confirm it's gone in the car's settings, because a previous owner's digital access is controlled through the manufacturer, not the locks. We still handle the physical keys and fobs that go with the car.
How the BMW immobilizer works on the i4
BMW has changed its key technology roughly once a decade, so the build date tells us more about the job than the badge on the trunk. In 2000, the 3, 5 and 7 Series, the X5 and the Z3 all used the EWS immobilizer: a diamond-shaped remote key with a Philips ID44-family transponder, checked by an EWS module that trades a rolling code with the engine computer. The key blade is a two-track or four-track design depending on the model. The 2002 7 Series introduced the Car Access System (CAS), and over the next decade CAS2, CAS3 and CAS3+ spread across the lineup with a rectangular fob that slides into a dash slot before you press Start/Stop. F-series cars from 2009 dropped the slot for Hitag Pro (ID49) smart fobs, stored in a CAS4 module on the 5, 6 and 7 Series and X3, and in a front electronic module (FEM) or body domain controller (BDC) on the 2, 3 and 4 Series, X5 and i3. G-series models from 2016 kept the BDC idea and, from mid-2020 builds, added BMW Digital Key for phones. The newest electronics, found on the current 7 and 5 Series, the electric i models and several recent redesigns and facelifts, are still dealer territory for new keys.
- Production began in October 2021 at BMW's Munich plant.
- A Digital Key shared from the My BMW app gives a second driver access without handing over a fob.
- The xDrive40 was announced in May 2023 for North America, adding all-wheel drive below the M50.
Getting a 2022 i4 key from the dealer
We don't program i4 fobs. BMW dealers add keys through BMW's online systems, which register each fob with the car, and aftermarket programmers don't dependably cover this model. What we can do is open the car in a lockout, check which fobs and phone keys still work, and help you organize the ID and registration a dealer will ask to see before ordering a new fob.
New i4 fobs come from BMW dealers. We handle lockouts and help you get ready for the dealer visit.
How we help when the key must come from BMW
With every key gone, most BMWs built before the newest electronics can still be keyed where they sit. We verify your ID and proof of ownership first. Then we get a working blade: on EWS cars that means cutting a key by code or by decoding the driver's door lock, and on slot-key and smart-fob cars it means cutting the emergency blade so the door opens mechanically. Next, we read the immobilizer module, through OBD-II where possible and on the bench where not, collect the engine computer's ISN when the system calls for it, and write new keys into the car. The lost keys are deleted so they can no longer start it. For models on BMW's newest platform, and some late body-module software, the dealer is the only route, and we'll tell you so before any work begins.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the BMW dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2022 i4 needs a dealer key
On the 2022 i4, the immobilizer and the keyless system trust only keys that BMW's own system has authorized for that VIN. Programming happens through a secure online connection, and the key itself is usually ordered with the car's security data already written to it. Independent locksmith equipment is very capable on most vehicles, but on dealer-only generations like this one the honest answer is that the factory has to be involved. Being upfront about that saves you the cost of a wasted service call.
What to bring to the dealer
Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.
While you wait for the new key
While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.
What affects the dealer's price for an i4 key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2022 i4, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
i4 key battery
If a new replacement doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.
Common BMW key problems
- A weak 12-volt battery can make a healthy key look dead: the locks ignore the remote, Start/Stop does nothing and warnings pile up on the dash. Charge or test the battery before blaming the fob or the body module.
- Diamond-shaped remote keys on EWS-era BMWs recharge their cell only while the key sits in the ignition. A spare left in a drawer for months often loses its buttons, yet it still starts the car because the transponder needs no battery.
- Used BMW fobs from online sellers are locked to the car they came from. Some can be professionally renewed and recoded, many cannot, so send us the part number and FCC ID before you buy one.
- On slot-key BMWs from roughly 2002 to 2013, a fob the dash won't accept or recognize points to either a failing key or a faulty slot. Trying your spare first tells you which side has the problem before parts are ordered.
- Installing a used engine computer or immobilizer module leaves a BMW that cranks but won't run. The two modules share a secret code, so the replacement has to be synchronized or adapted to the car first.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.
- Be careful with discount fobs from online marketplaces. A listing may match your remote's shape while using a different frequency, chip or FCC ID, and many used smart keys are locked to their original vehicle. If you already bought one, send us the listing or a photo before the visit so nobody pays for a programming attempt that can't work.
- Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
Proof of ownership
Not every situation fits the simple case, so here's how we handle the common exceptions. For a leased or financed vehicle, a registration that lists you as the registered owner or lessee works with your ID. If you just bought the car, bring the signed title or bill of sale along with your ID. For a company or fleet vehicle, we need written authorization from the business plus the driver's ID. If the car belongs to a family member, the registered owner should be present or provide signed permission and a copy of their ID. Rental vehicles go through the rental company.
