2024 BMW 7 Series Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2024 BMW 7 Series uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system. New keys for it generally come from the BMW dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

2024 BMW 7 Series Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2024 BMW 7 Series, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through BMW. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The G70 7 Series arrived for 2023 as the 740i and 760i xDrive, with the 750e plug-in hybrid added later and the electric version sold as the i7. It runs on BMW's newest electronics platform. Every car starts with a smart fob in the cabin and supports BMW Digital Key on compatible phones through the My BMW app. Fobs are a new design tied to the car's body controller, so nothing from a G11 or G12 can be reused or reprogrammed for it.

What's specific to the 2024 7 Series

The 2024 BMW 7 Series is the second of 4 model years in the 7 Series G70 (seventh generation) (2023–2026), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source. At 2 years old, a 2024 BMW 7 Series is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob.

Smart-key cars like the 2024 7 Series can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.

Key options for the 2024 BMW 7 Series

  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2024 BMW 7 Series open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
  • Phone as key. Digital keys make sharing easy, and that's the part to manage carefully. Most systems let the owner send limited guest keys to family members and revoke them from the app. If a phone is lost or stolen, remove its key from your account right away and use your phone maker's tools to lock or erase the device; that's faster than any visit from us. When you buy a used 2024 BMW 7 Series with phone-key capability, ask the seller to remove their account from the vehicle and confirm it's gone in the car's settings, because a previous owner's digital access is controlled through the manufacturer, not the locks. We still handle the physical keys and fobs that go with the car.

How the BMW immobilizer works on the 7 Series

BMW has changed its key technology roughly once a decade, so the build date tells us more about the job than the badge on the trunk. In 2000, the 3, 5 and 7 Series, the X5 and the Z3 all used the EWS immobilizer: a diamond-shaped remote key with a Philips ID44-family transponder, checked by an EWS module that trades a rolling code with the engine computer. The key blade is a two-track or four-track design depending on the model. The 2002 7 Series introduced the Car Access System (CAS), and over the next decade CAS2, CAS3 and CAS3+ spread across the lineup with a rectangular fob that slides into a dash slot before you press Start/Stop. F-series cars from 2009 dropped the slot for Hitag Pro (ID49) smart fobs, stored in a CAS4 module on the 5, 6 and 7 Series and X3, and in a front electronic module (FEM) or body domain controller (BDC) on the 2, 3 and 4 Series, X5 and i3. G-series models from 2016 kept the BDC idea and, from mid-2020 builds, added BMW Digital Key for phones. The newest electronics, found on the current 7 and 5 Series, the electric i models and several recent redesigns and facelifts, are still dealer territory for new keys.

  • The G70 shares its newest-generation electronics with the i7 and the current 5 Series.
  • Dealers usually order a fob coded to your VIN, so a replacement isn't always available the same day.
  • A Digital Key shared through the My BMW app is a useful stopgap if a fob goes missing.

Getting a 2024 7 Series key from the dealer

G70 fobs are programmed by BMW dealers, which register each new key with the car through BMW's online systems. Aftermarket programmers don't dependably cover this platform yet, so we don't program G70 fobs. We can open the car in a lockout, confirm which keys and phone keys you still have, and help you prepare the ID and registration paperwork the dealer will request.

New fobs for 2023 and newer 7 Series come from BMW dealers. We help with lockouts and with preparing for the dealer visit.

How we help when the key must come from BMW

With every key gone, most BMWs built before the newest electronics can still be keyed where they sit. We verify your ID and proof of ownership first. Then we get a working blade: on EWS cars that means cutting a key by code or by decoding the driver's door lock, and on slot-key and smart-fob cars it means cutting the emergency blade so the door opens mechanically. Next, we read the immobilizer module, through OBD-II where possible and on the bench where not, collect the engine computer's ISN when the system calls for it, and write new keys into the car. The lost keys are deleted so they can no longer start it. For models on BMW's newest platform, and some late body-module software, the dealer is the only route, and we'll tell you so before any work begins.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the BMW dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2024 7 Series needs a dealer key

On the 2024 7 Series, the immobilizer and the keyless system trust only keys that BMW's own system has authorized for that VIN. Programming happens through a secure online connection, and the key itself is usually ordered with the car's security data already written to it. Independent locksmith equipment is very capable on most vehicles, but on dealer-only generations like this one the honest answer is that the factory has to be involved. Being upfront about that saves you the cost of a wasted service call.

What to bring to the dealer

Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.

While you wait for the new key

While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.

What affects the dealer's price for a 7 Series key

Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2024 7 Series, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

7 Series key battery

A fob battery rarely dies all at once. The warning signs build: you have to get closer to the car before the doors respond, the dash shows a key battery or key-not-detected message, or the push-button start only works with the fob held near the button. Inland heat speeds that decline, especially for fobs left in a hot cabin or on the dashboard. Keep a spare replacement at home in a cool drawer, sealed in its original package, and buy from a busy store where stock turns over quickly. A cell that sat on a shelf for years may arrive already partly spent.

Common BMW key problems

  • Comfort Access lets the fob stay in your pocket, but it also exposes the car to relay theft. Storing keys away from the front door, or in a signal-blocking pouch, lowers that risk on smart-key BMWs.
  • Inland Empire summer heat shortens coin-cell life and can warp older key shells. Keep the spare indoors instead of in a hot glovebox, and replace a fob battery at the first sign of reduced range.
  • Diamond-shaped remote keys on EWS-era BMWs recharge their cell only while the key sits in the ignition. A spare left in a drawer for months often loses its buttons, yet it still starts the car because the transponder needs no battery.
  • Used BMW fobs from online sellers are locked to the car they came from. Some can be professionally renewed and recoded, many cannot, so send us the part number and FCC ID before you buy one.
  • Smart fobs announce a weak coin cell with shorter range or a key-not-detected message at startup. Every model has a backup spot, shown in the owner's manual, where holding the fob lets the car read it and start anyway.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
  • Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
  • On any vehicle with a turn-key ignition, keep the key ring light. A heavy cluster of keys, tools and charms swings with every bump and slowly wears the ignition wafers and the key itself. When the key starts to stick or needs a wiggle to turn, deal with it early, before it stops turning entirely.

Proof of ownership

Before we cut or program a key for any vehicle, we verify that you have the right to it. Please have two things ready: the current registration or the title, and a government-issued photo ID with a matching name. We also check that the VIN on those documents matches the VIN plate on the dashboard. If the registration is locked inside the car, that's fine; we open the vehicle first, check the paperwork in the glove box, and only then make the key. If something doesn't line up, we stop and sort it out before any key is made.

New keys for this vehicle generally have to come from the dealer. We can still open the car, cut emergency blades where the key has one, and help you coordinate the order. New fobs for 2023 and newer 7 Series come from BMW dealers. We help with lockouts and with preparing for the dealer visit. The 2024 7 Series uses a smart proximity key with push-button start and a phone-as-key system.

Is the 2024 BMW 7 Series push-to-start?

Yes. The 2024 7 Series uses push-button start with a smart proximity key, so a replacement has to be a programmed smart fob, not just a cut blade.

How long does a dealer key for a 2024 BMW 7 Series take?

It depends on the dealer's stock and whether the key is cut and coded centrally. Some keys are available the same day, others take several days to arrive. Call the dealer's parts department with your VIN first, and call us if you need the car opened or an emergency blade in the meantime.
