2021 Audi e-tron Key Replacement

Short answer: The 2021 Audi e-tron uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Audi dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

2021 Audi e-tron Key Replacement: replacement car keys and smart fobs

If you need a key for a 2021 Audi e-tron, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Audi. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The e-tron, e-tron Sportback and e-tron S use a smart fob, and the car is ready to drive once you press the start button with the fob inside. Advanced key adds touch-to-unlock door handles. An emergency blade slides out of the fob for the driver's door, which matters if the car's 12-volt battery dies even when the main battery is charged.

What's specific to the 2021 e-tron

The 2021 Audi e-tron is the third of 5 model years in the e-tron GE (2019–2023), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source.

A 2021 Audi e-tron is about 5 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.

Key options for the 2021 Audi e-tron

  • Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Proximity keys bring a security trade-off worth understanding. Because the fob is always listening, thieves with relay equipment can stretch its signal from inside your house to the car in the driveway. Keeping the fob away from exterior walls, or in a signal-blocking pouch, closes that gap, and some fobs offer a sleep mode described in the owner's manual. If a smart key for your 2021 Audi e-tron is lost or stolen, programming a replacement is the moment to delete the missing fob from the car's memory. And be wary of used fobs from online sellers: a lot of them are locked to the vehicle they came from and can't be reprogrammed to yours.

How the Audi immobilizer works on the e-tron

Every Audi sold in the US from 2000 on has a transponder immobilizer, but the system behind it changed several times, and that history decides how a new key gets made. Through the mid-2000s, most models used a Megamos ID48 chip in an HU66 flip key, with the immobilizer data stored in the instrument cluster. The A6, Q7 and A8 that followed kept a flip key but added an entry-and-start module that has to be read during programming. Starting with the 2008 A5 and 2009 A4, the B8 family switched to a rectangular fob and moved immobilizer and keyless functions into a comfort control module known in the trade as BCM2; the C7 A6, first-generation A7 and D4 A8 use the same module family. Smaller MQB cars such as the 2015-2020 A3, the third-generation TT and the 2019-2025 Q3 go back to a cluster-based system. The 2017-and-later MLB Evo models protect their data far more heavily, and the newest Audis register keys through Audi's online system. US-market Audi remotes run on 315 MHz.

  • The e-tron Sportback joined the US lineup for 2020.
  • A drained 12-volt battery can leave the car locked and unresponsive even with a full high-voltage battery.

Getting a 2021 e-tron key from the dealer

The e-tron has a protected, VIN-coded immobilizer, and aftermarket programming for its keys is limited. Replacement fobs are usually ordered by VIN from the dealer and coded there. We check your VIN against current options, help with lockouts, and test a fob that stopped working before you order a new one.

Keys for the e-tron generally come from the dealer; we help with lockouts and coordination.

How we help when the key must come from Audi

Losing every key to an Audi is often solvable, but the method depends on the era. On 2000s cars with ID48 flip keys, we read the immobilizer data from the instrument cluster, sometimes on the bench, then cut a new HU66 blade by code or by decoding the door lock. On 2008-2018 slot-start and push-button models, all-keys-lost usually means removing the comfort or entry-and-start module so its memory can be read directly, which takes time and care. On many 2017-and-later models, and on the newest platforms, a lost-all situation goes through the dealer, and the car may need to be towed there. In every case we confirm ownership with your ID and registration or title before starting, and we tell you which route your VIN points to before you pay for anything.

  1. Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
  2. Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Audi dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
  3. Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
  4. Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.

Why the 2021 e-tron needs a dealer key

Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2021 e-tron is one of them. Audi generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Audi models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.

What to bring to the dealer

Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.

While you wait for the new key

Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.

What affects the dealer's price for an e-tron key

Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.

Avoid doing this twice

Once you have a working key for your 2021 e-tron, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.

e-tron key battery

Most fobs for a 2021 Audi e-tron open along a small slot in the seam; a coin or a plastic pry tool works better than a screwdriver, which chews up the housing. If the fob hides a mechanical blade, slide it out first, since the case often opens from that gap. Note which side of the old cell faces up, swap in a fresh replacement, and press the halves together until they click all the way around. Handle the new battery by its edges, because skin oil on the faces can hurt contact. In most cases the fob keeps its programming through a battery change, so test lock, unlock and start, and you're done.

Common Audi key problems

  • On many Audis the driver's lock cylinder hides under a cap on the door handle and almost never gets used, so it can seize. Turning it with the emergency blade a few times a year keeps it ready for a dead 12-volt battery.
  • Remotes on older Audis can lose sync after a battery change. Pressing a remote button and then unlocking the driver's door with the blade within about a minute often resyncs them; if not, the remote needs adapting with a scan tool.
  • A weak fob battery on push-button models triggers a key-not-detected warning. The transponder works without battery power, so holding the fob at the backup spot shown in your owner's manual usually lets the car start until you replace the cell.
  • Keys bought online are often European versions running on 433 or 868 MHz. Even if the chip can be programmed, the buttons will never work on a US Audi, because US models use 315 MHz remotes.
  • Slot-start Audis, meaning B8-generation A4, A5 and Q5 models without advanced key, can develop a worn ignition slot that won't read or release the fob. That is an ignition switch repair, not a key problem.

Tips from a mobile locksmith

  • Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
  • Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
  • Learn your car's dead-fob start method now, in the driveway, rather than in a dark parking lot later. Depending on the make, you hold the fob against the start button or place it in a marked pocket in the console. Also find the hidden keyhole on the driver's door handle and practice using the emergency blade.

Proof of ownership

Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.
