2020 Audi A8 Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2020 Audi A8 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Audi dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2020 Audi A8, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Audi. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.
2020 A8 key specs
| Generation | D5 (Typ 4N), 2019–2026 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Locksmith support | Dealer key required |
The D5 A8 uses a C8-era smart fob with push-button start, an emergency blade and touch-to-unlock door handles on cars with advanced key. The plug-in hybrid version uses the same type of fob. Because several Audi models use similar-looking fobs, part numbers and VIN matter more than appearance when ordering a replacement. Keep the original fob's label or your VIN on hand, because fobs from other models can look identical but will not work. A flat 12-volt battery is another common reason the fob seems dead.
What's specific to the 2020 A8
The 2020 Audi A8 is the second of 8 model years in the A8 D5 (Typ 4N) (2019–2026), so it shares its key system with the rest of that run, which makes replacement parts easy to source.
A 2020 Audi A8 is about 6 years old now. Original fob batteries are near the end of their life at this age, so weak range or a "key not detected" message is often a battery before it is a failed fob. Cars this age are often on their second owner, which is when a single remaining key and a request for a spare tend to show up.
Key options for the 2020 Audi A8
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Making a new smart key is mostly a programming job. The fob has to match the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip, and then the keyless system must be told to accept it, normally through the OBD-II port. Depending on the platform, that can mean entering a PIN, waiting through a timed security procedure, or on some newer vehicles, using manufacturer online access. When every key is lost, certain models need a module removed and read on the bench. For your Audi A8 D5 (Typ 4N), we'll tell you which of those applies, and if a step is dealer-only, you'll hear it before we drive out. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob is cut by code during the same visit.
How the Audi immobilizer works on the A8
Every Audi sold in the US from 2000 on has a transponder immobilizer, but the system behind it changed several times, and that history decides how a new key gets made. Through the mid-2000s, most models used a Megamos ID48 chip in an HU66 flip key, with the immobilizer data stored in the instrument cluster. The A6, Q7 and A8 that followed kept a flip key but added an entry-and-start module that has to be read during programming. Starting with the 2008 A5 and 2009 A4, the B8 family switched to a rectangular fob and moved immobilizer and keyless functions into a comfort control module known in the trade as BCM2; the C7 A6, first-generation A7 and D4 A8 use the same module family. Smaller MQB cars such as the 2015-2020 A3, the third-generation TT and the 2019-2025 Q3 go back to a cluster-based system. The 2017-and-later MLB Evo models protect their data far more heavily, and the newest Audis register keys through Audi's online system. US-market Audi remotes run on 315 MHz.
- The D5 A8 arrived in the US for the 2019 model year.
- A fob that stops responding should get a fresh battery before anything is ordered.
Getting a 2020 A8 key from the dealer
The D5 uses a protected, VIN-coded immobilizer, and aftermarket programming for its keys is limited. A replacement fob is normally ordered by VIN from the dealer and coded to the car. We check current coverage before you decide, and we can handle lockouts and fob battery problems on site while the order is sorted out.
Keys for the D5 A8 generally come from the dealer; we help with lockouts and coordination.
How we help when the key must come from Audi
Losing every key to an Audi is often solvable, but the method depends on the era. On 2000s cars with ID48 flip keys, we read the immobilizer data from the instrument cluster, sometimes on the bench, then cut a new HU66 blade by code or by decoding the door lock. On 2008-2018 slot-start and push-button models, all-keys-lost usually means removing the comfort or entry-and-start module so its memory can be read directly, which takes time and care. On many 2017-and-later models, and on the newest platforms, a lost-all situation goes through the dealer, and the car may need to be towed there. In every case we confirm ownership with your ID and registration or title before starting, and we tell you which route your VIN points to before you pay for anything.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Audi dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2020 A8 needs a dealer key
Some keys can't be made outside the factory network, and the 2020 A8 is one of them. Audi generates the key data on its own servers and ties it to the car's VIN, so a new key is either pre-coded before it ships or programmed at the vehicle with an online session that only authorized dealer equipment can open. Aftermarket tools that handle older Audi models can't complete that handshake on this generation, at least not reliably today. That is a security feature: it is the reason relay and key-cloning thefts are harder on cars like this.
What to bring to the dealer
Bring the vehicle registration or title in your name, a matching government photo ID, and the VIN (on the lower driver's side of the windshield and on the door-jamb label). If the car is financed or leased, the dealer may also ask for the lender's paperwork, so call ahead and ask exactly what they need. If any key still works, bring it; adding a key is usually faster than replacing every key.
While you wait for the new key
Waiting on a factory key can take anywhere from the same day to a week or more, depending on stock. In the meantime, avoid buying a used key online; on dealer-only systems a used key almost never programs to a different car. If you're locked out of the car or need something from inside it, call us; that part is quick and doesn't depend on the dealer.
What affects the dealer's price for an A8 key
Expect the dealer's quote to include the key itself, a programming or setup charge, and sometimes a separate charge for cutting an emergency blade. If every key is lost, add the cost of getting the car to the dealership. Comparing two dealers is worth a phone call; programming charges vary more than the price of the key.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2020 A8, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
A8 key battery
If a new replacement doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.
Common Audi key problems
- Flip keys from the 2000s wear out at the pivot, so the blade stops locking open or flops loose. A new shell with a fresh HU66 blade can usually take your original transponder and remote board, which avoids reprogramming the car.
- Slot-start Audis, meaning B8-generation A4, A5 and Q5 models without advanced key, can develop a worn ignition slot that won't read or release the fob. That is an ignition switch repair, not a key problem.
- Remotes on older Audis can lose sync after a battery change. Pressing a remote button and then unlocking the driver's door with the blade within about a minute often resyncs them; if not, the remote needs adapting with a scan tool.
- Used keys pulled from another Audi are usually locked to that car. Some comfort-module-era keys can be reset with special equipment, but many later keys cannot, so check with us before buying a used fob.
- Touch-sensor door handles on advanced-key cars can fail one door at a time. The fob buttons and the start function still work, so the repair is the handle sensor, not a new key.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
- Photograph the back of your fob and any key tag that came with the car. The FCC ID, part number and key code printed there make ordering a replacement faster and more accurate. Store the photos somewhere you can reach from any device, not only on the phone that might go missing along with the keys.
- If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
- Southern California heat is hard on keys. Fob batteries drain faster, plastic housings turn brittle, and rubber button pads crack when a key spends summer afternoons on a dashboard or in a sunny cup holder. Carry the fob with you or keep it shaded, and replace batteries before summer rather than after they fail.
Proof of ownership
Before we cut or program a key for any vehicle, we verify that you have the right to it. Please have two things ready: the current registration or the title, and a government-issued photo ID with a matching name. We also check that the VIN on those documents matches the VIN plate on the dashboard. If the registration is locked inside the car, that's fine; we open the vehicle first, check the paperwork in the glove box, and only then make the key. If something doesn't line up, we stop and sort it out before any key is made.
