2025 Audi A5 Key Replacement
Short answer: The 2025 Audi A5 uses a smart proximity key with push-button start. New keys for it generally come from the Audi dealer. Julian's Locksmith can still help: we open the car without damage and help you prepare the dealer order. Call (951) 903-3193.

If you need a key for a 2025 Audi A5, start with one honest fact: this generation's keys generally have to be ordered and coded through Audi. That doesn't leave you stuck. We can open the car, help with the mechanical side and make sure the dealer visit happens once, with the right paperwork.

The new A5 is a sedan with a liftback-style trunk, sold from the 2025 model year with push-button start and a new-generation fob. Be careful with 2025: the previous A5 Sportback was also sold as a 2025 model, and it uses the older MLB Evo key. Your VIN and the part number on the fob tell the two apart. Online listings for the new car's fob are still sparse, so order through a source that checks the VIN.
What's specific to the 2025 A5
2025 was the first model year of the A5 B10 (A5 sedan). Early-production cars sometimes use different part numbers than later ones, so for a 2025 Audi A5 we confirm the exact key from the VIN or the old key's FCC ID before cutting anything. The key style carried over from the previous generation, but immobilizer data and part numbers can still differ, so a key from a 2024 is not a safe substitute.
At 1 year old, a 2025 Audi A5 is usually still on its original keys and fob batteries. The most common call for a car this new is a second key, since many buyers leave the dealer with only one, or a replacement after a lost fob. Smart-key cars like the 2025 A5 can be targeted with relay attacks that extend the fob's signal from inside your home, so keep fobs away from exterior walls or in a signal-blocking pouch, and have any missing fob erased from the car.
Key options for the 2025 Audi A5
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). Making a new smart key is mostly a programming job. The fob has to match the vehicle's FCC ID, frequency and chip, and then the keyless system must be told to accept it, normally through the OBD-II port. Depending on the platform, that can mean entering a PIN, waiting through a timed security procedure, or on some newer vehicles, using manufacturer online access. When every key is lost, certain models need a module removed and read on the bench. For your Audi A5 B10 (A5 sedan), we'll tell you which of those applies, and if a step is dealer-only, you'll hear it before we drive out. The emergency blade hidden inside the fob is cut by code during the same visit.
How the Audi immobilizer works on the A5
Every Audi sold in the US from 2000 on has a transponder immobilizer, but the system behind it changed several times, and that history decides how a new key gets made. Through the mid-2000s, most models used a Megamos ID48 chip in an HU66 flip key, with the immobilizer data stored in the instrument cluster. The A6, Q7 and A8 that followed kept a flip key but added an entry-and-start module that has to be read during programming. Starting with the 2008 A5 and 2009 A4, the B8 family switched to a rectangular fob and moved immobilizer and keyless functions into a comfort control module known in the trade as BCM2; the C7 A6, first-generation A7 and D4 A8 use the same module family. Smaller MQB cars such as the 2015-2020 A3, the third-generation TT and the 2019-2025 Q3 go back to a cluster-based system. The 2017-and-later MLB Evo models protect their data far more heavily, and the newest Audis register keys through Audi's online system. US-market Audi remotes run on 315 MHz.
- From 2025 the A5 name moved to a sedan that effectively replaced the A4.
- No coupe or cabriolet is offered in this generation.
Getting a 2025 A5 key from the dealer
This A5 uses Audi's newest electronics architecture, and keys are registered through Audi's online system using the VIN. A replacement fob is ordered and activated by the dealer. Aftermarket programming for this platform isn't established, so we won't promise it. What we can do is get you into the car if you're locked out and help you plan the dealer visit, including arranging a tow if no key remains.
Keys for the new A5 are dealer-ordered and coded online by Audi; we help with lockouts and with coordinating the dealer.
How we help when the key must come from Audi
Losing every key to an Audi is often solvable, but the method depends on the era. On 2000s cars with ID48 flip keys, we read the immobilizer data from the instrument cluster, sometimes on the bench, then cut a new HU66 blade by code or by decoding the door lock. On 2008-2018 slot-start and push-button models, all-keys-lost usually means removing the comfort or entry-and-start module so its memory can be read directly, which takes time and care. On many 2017-and-later models, and on the newest platforms, a lost-all situation goes through the dealer, and the car may need to be towed there. In every case we confirm ownership with your ID and registration or title before starting, and we tell you which route your VIN points to before you pay for anything.
- Get you back into the car. If the car is locked, we open it on site without damage, so you can reach the registration, the VIN plate and anything you need inside.
- Line up the dealer order. We help you gather what the Audi dealer will ask for: the VIN, current registration or title, and photo ID in the owner's name. That avoids a second trip.
- Keep the car where it is if possible. Ask the dealer whether the key can be programmed with the car in place or whether it needs to be towed in. Some brands deliver a pre-coded key; others must program it at the vehicle.
- Plan for a spare. Once you have a working key, order a second one. Losing the only key on a dealer-only system is the slowest and most expensive situation to recover from.
Why the 2025 A5 needs a dealer key
On the 2025 A5, the immobilizer and the keyless system trust only keys that Audi's own system has authorized for that VIN. Programming happens through a secure online connection, and the key itself is usually ordered with the car's security data already written to it. Independent locksmith equipment is very capable on most vehicles, but on dealer-only generations like this one the honest answer is that the factory has to be involved. Being upfront about that saves you the cost of a wasted service call.
What to bring to the dealer
Before you call the dealer, collect three things: proof of ownership (registration or title), photo ID with the same name, and the 17-character VIN. Write down which keys you still have and whether any of them still start the car. That one detail changes the order, the price and whether the car has to be at the dealership for programming.
While you wait for the new key
While the dealer key is on order, protect what you have. If one key still works, keep it indoors and away from the car, and don't hand it to anyone you wouldn't trust with the car itself. If the car is locked with belongings inside, we can open it without damage. If the key has a mechanical emergency blade, ask us about cutting a spare blade by code so you can at least lock and unlock the doors.
What affects the dealer's price for an A5 key
Dealer key pricing depends on the key type (a smart key costs more than a basic remote key), whether the car needs to be at the dealership for programming, the dealer's programming or labor charge, and whether a tow is involved because no working key remains. Ask for the total, parts plus programming plus any tow, before you agree, and ask whether ordering two keys at once lowers the per-key cost.
Avoid doing this twice
Once you have a working key for your 2025 A5, order a second one while the car's information is already on file. On dealer-only systems, adding a key while one still works is simpler, faster and cheaper than replacing every key after a loss. Keep the spare somewhere you can reach quickly, not in the car, and note where you stored it.
A5 key battery
If a new replacement doesn't bring the fob back, the battery wasn't the problem. Common culprits include a battery holder whose solder joints have cracked from drops, contacts corroded by moisture, worn rubber button pads that no longer reach the circuit, or a board damaged by water. We can test whether the fob is transmitting at all and inspect the board closely. Sometimes a new shell or a resoldered holder solves it; sometimes the fob has to be replaced and programmed. Meanwhile, the car can usually still be started with the fob held at the backup spot described in the owner's manual.
Common Audi key problems
- On many Audis the driver's lock cylinder hides under a cap on the door handle and almost never gets used, so it can seize. Turning it with the emergency blade a few times a year keeps it ready for a dead 12-volt battery.
- Keys bought online are often European versions running on 433 or 868 MHz. Even if the chip can be programmed, the buttons will never work on a US Audi, because US models use 315 MHz remotes.
- Remotes on older Audis can lose sync after a battery change. Pressing a remote button and then unlocking the driver's door with the blade within about a minute often resyncs them; if not, the remote needs adapting with a scan tool.
- Touch-sensor door handles on advanced-key cars can fail one door at a time. The fob buttons and the start function still work, so the repair is the handle sensor, not a new key.
- Slot-start Audis, meaning B8-generation A4, A5 and Q5 models without advanced key, can develop a worn ignition slot that won't read or release the fob. That is an ignition switch repair, not a key problem.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Be careful with discount fobs from online marketplaces. A listing may match your remote's shape while using a different frequency, chip or FCC ID, and many used smart keys are locked to their original vehicle. If you already bought one, send us the listing or a photo before the visit so nobody pays for a programming attempt that can't work.
- Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
- When a key's head cracks or its blade bends, replace it before it fails. A transponder chip can slip out of a split head, and a bent blade can break off inside the ignition or door lock, turning a simple key replacement into an extraction and repair job. Small symptoms are the inexpensive time to act.
Proof of ownership
Not every situation fits the simple case, so here's how we handle the common exceptions. For a leased or financed vehicle, a registration that lists you as the registered owner or lessee works with your ID. If you just bought the car, bring the signed title or bill of sale along with your ID. For a company or fleet vehicle, we need written authorization from the business plus the driver's ID. If the car belongs to a family member, the registered owner should be present or provide signed permission and a copy of their ID. Rental vehicles go through the rental company.
