Alfa Romeo Stelvio Key Replacement
Short answer: The Stelvio (Type 949) is Alfa Romeo's first SUV, built on the same Giorgio platform as the Giulia and sold in the US from the 2018 model year through 2026. US models use the 2.0-liter turbo four, all-wheel drive only for 2018, rear- or all-wheel drive from 2019 through 2024 and all-wheel drive only again for 2025 and 2026, plus a 2.9-liter twin-turbo Quadrifoglio until it left the lineup. Its keys mirror the Giulia's: a proximity fob, push-button start and a diagnostic PIN read that needs the right connection. On the Stelvio, the fob also opens the liftgate. We make Stelvio keys for model years 2018–2026. Call (951) 903-3193.

Keys tend to vanish far from home: a gym locker, a freeway rest stop, a jobsite across the Inland Empire. When the vehicle is a 2026 Alfa Romeo Stelvio and no spare is within reach, the practical fix is a locksmith who comes to the car. Julian's Locksmith serves Southern California from our base in San Bernardino with a mobile van set up for automotive key work. Tell us where the car is parked and what kind of key it used, and we'll give you an honest ETA and a quote. Once we're there and ownership is confirmed, we make the key from the car itself, using the VIN, lock decoding, or both, and program it before you drive off.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio keys by year
Stelvio keys by generation
| Generation | Type 949, 2024 refresh, 2024–2026 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Locksmith support | Spares; some cases need extra steps |
The refreshed Stelvio arrived for 2024 with 3+3 LED headlamps, a restyled grille and a 12.3-inch digital cluster. For 2025 and 2026 the EPA lists it only with the 2.0-liter turbo four and all-wheel drive. Parts listings for the familiar KR5ALFA434 fob stop around 2022, so we confirm the exact fob by VIN before ordering and treat chip, blade and battery details for late builds as unconfirmed. The proximity system and push-button start carry over. Late Stelvios need the right gateway or bypass connection before any key work. If the car takes the established fob, programming follows the PIN-read routine of earlier years. Aftermarket coverage for these model years is newer and thinner, so we tell you upfront when the dealer is the better route, particularly if every key is lost.
| Generation | Type 949, 2020 update, 2020–2023 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Key battery | CR2032 |
| Locksmith support | Spares; some cases need extra steps |
The 2020 update refreshed the cabin technology while keeping the same proximity fob, SIP22 emergency blade and CR2032 battery. US trims settled into Sprint, Ti, Veloce and Quadrifoglio by 2022, all sharing one key design, and both rear- and all-wheel-drive versions were offered in these years. A five-button fob with remote start is the usual replacement. OEM, refurbished and aftermarket versions are on the market, but fitment lists run only through about 2022, so match the FCC ID and part number and check a 2023 car by VIN. For these years, adding a spare still runs through a bypass connection and an immobilizer PIN read. An all-keys-lost job on a later build can call for extra equipment and, sometimes, a dealer. We confirm the build date from your VIN before quoting, because two Stelvios of the same model year can need different procedures.
| Generation | Type 949, launch version, 2018–2019 |
|---|---|
| Ignition | Push-button start |
| Key types | Smart proximity key (push-to-start) |
| Key battery | CR2032 |
| Locksmith support | Spares; some cases need extra steps |
Launch-era Stelvios share the Giulia's smart key: a five-button proximity fob, FCC ID KR5ALFA434, with lock, unlock, liftgate, panic and remote start. One press of unlock opens the driver's door and a second press within a second opens everything, and the infotainment menu can change that. A SIP22 emergency blade is stored inside for the day the CR2032 fob battery quits. The 2018 model year was all-wheel drive only and rear-drive versions joined for 2019, but drivetrain makes no difference to the key. Stelvios of this era use a diagnostic PIN-read path: a bypass cable connected near the center armrest, a five-digit immobilizer PIN read through the diagnostic port, then each fob is learned. With one working key, we can usually add a spare in one appointment. All-keys-lost is possible on many cars but needs extra equipment, and a few go to the dealer, so we check your VIN first.
Alfa Romeo key security
Alfa Romeo left the US market after 1995 and came back in stages, so the Alfas on American roads span several very different key systems. The 2008 8C Competizione and 2009 8C Spider were assembled at Maserati's Modena plant and serviced in the US through Maserati dealers, and their keys work with an Alfa Romeo CODE immobilizer and a CODE card. The 4C, sold here for the 2015 through 2020 model years, uses a fold-out key with a built-in remote and a transponder that the US owner's manual calls Sentry Key, Chrysler's name for the immobilizer. The Giulia and Stelvio, built on the rear-drive Giorgio platform, moved to proximity keys: a five-button smart key on about 434 MHz, push-button start and a hidden emergency blade. The Tonale, sold for 2024 through 2026, is the Dodge Hornet's twin and uses a Stellantis smart key with Keyless Enter 'n Go. On every one of these cars, a cut blade only gets you into the door. The engine will not run until the immobilizer has learned the key, and on the newer models that learning can involve a secure gateway or dealer-only tools.
On the Giulia and Stelvio, which make up most Alfas on the road, key programming runs through the diagnostic port, but it is never a simple plug-in job. The tool reads a five-digit immobilizer PIN and then learns each fob. The Stelvio in particular needs a bypass cable connected near the center armrest before that PIN can be read, and cars with a secure gateway block ordinary scan tools until the right connection is made. We keep a battery maintainer connected during programming, because a voltage dip can interrupt the session. Bring every key you have so each one can be tested afterward. The 4C, 8C and Tonale follow different, more dealer-dependent paths, covered on their model pages. Whatever the model, a replacement fob has to match the original FCC ID and part number, so we check yours before ordering anything.
All Stelvio keys lost
Losing every key to a modern Alfa Romeo is a bigger job than adding a spare. On a Giulia or Stelvio, all-keys-lost work still starts with reading the immobilizer PIN through the diagnostic port, but it needs the bypass connection first and takes longer, and on some later builds the aftermarket route may not be available at all, so we confirm by VIN which situation you're in before we drive out. The Tonale, 4C and 8C usually go to an Alfa Romeo dealer for the key itself (a Maserati dealer for the 8C), and the car may need a tow if it isn't already there. Whichever route fits, we verify your ID and ownership papers, such as the registration or title, before making any key. If you still have one working key, get a spare made now: it can turn a possible tow and a multi-day dealer wait into a short visit.
- Gather your documents and the VIN. Find your registration or title and a government photo ID in the same name. Note the VIN, which is printed on the driver's side of the dashboard and usually on your insurance card. If the paperwork is locked in the car, tell us; we'll open the vehicle first and check it there.
- Get into the vehicle without damage. Entry comes before key-making because we need access to the ignition, the OBD-II port and sometimes the documents in the glove box. We take care with weather stripping, door frames and paint, and we confirm the dash VIN matches your registration before going any further.
- Originate a new key from the car. With no key to copy, the cuts come from the vehicle itself. We retrieve the key code through manufacturer channels where possible, or decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool. Then we cut the blade on our code machine and confirm it turns the lock smoothly.
- Program the key to the immobilizer. All-keys-lost programming often takes longer than adding a key, because the car has no trusted key to authorize the change. We follow the procedure your Alfa Romeo Stelvio requires, then confirm the engine starts and keeps running and the remote or keyless functions respond.
- Erase missing keys and add a spare. A lost key's metal blade can still open your doors even after its chip is erased. If the keys disappeared along with something showing where you live or park, consider rekeying the car's door lock cylinders too. We'll also recommend leaving with two working keys, not one.
Dealer or mobile locksmith?
Dealers have one clear advantage: direct access to the manufacturer's own systems. Some newer vehicles tie key programming to online authorization that only a dealer can use, and certain all-keys-lost situations on specific platforms still require it. A good locksmith knows where those lines are. Where we can do the job, we use professional programming equipment that talks to the same immobilizer and keyless systems through the OBD-II port, and in many cases the result is identical: a properly registered key that starts the car. Where we can't, we can often still help by opening the vehicle, cutting a mechanical blade from code, or helping you gather what the dealer will ask for so that visit goes smoothly. For your Alfa Romeo Stelvio, ask us directly and you'll get a plain answer.
How the job works
- Identify the exact key your Stelvio uses. Every job starts with the VIN, the trim and a look at any key you still have. From those we confirm the keyway, the transponder or smart-key chip, the remote frequency, the FCC ID and the button layout. Two Alfa Romeo Stelvio keys that look identical can carry different electronics, so this step keeps the wrong part from ever reaching the car.
- Verify ownership before any work. California holds licensed locksmiths responsible for knowing whose car they're making keys for. We record your name, the VIN and the plate on a work order. If you aren't the registered owner, you'll need the owner's written authorization along with your own photo ID before we begin.
- Get the key code or decode the lock. A key is cut from a code, not a guess. When the factory code can be retrieved through manufacturer channels after ownership is verified, we use it. When it can't, we decode a door lock with a pick-decoder tool that reads the wafer positions without damaging anything, then work out any missing cuts.
- Cut the blade on-site. Our van carries a code-cutting machine that handles both traditional edge-cut blades and the laser-cut, side-milled profiles common on newer keys. The blade is cut to the code, then test-fitted in a door lock and the ignition or emergency keyhole to confirm smooth operation before any programming begins.
- Program the chip, remote or smart key. With the blade done, we connect to the OBD-II port and register the new key with the immobilizer. Depending on the Alfa Romeo system, this may involve a security PIN, a timed waiting period, or on-board button sequences for the remote. On some vehicles we clone a working key's chip instead, when that's the more reliable path.
- Test everything and clear out old keys. The last step is a short walkthrough. We show you how many keys the car now recognizes, point out the dead-fob start method for your vehicle, and hand you an itemized receipt. If a spare makes sense, it's simplest to add it during this same visit while the equipment is already connected.
What affects the price of a Stelvio key
- All keys lost or adding a key. On some vehicles, losing the last key changes the programming entirely, from a quick add-key procedure to a full immobilizer reset or a module read on the bench. That extra labor shows up in the price, and it's the strongest argument for keeping a spare in the house.
- Programming complexity and security access. Some immobilizers accept a new key with a few on-board steps. Others need a PIN code, a timed security wait, manufacturer online access, or removing a module to read its data. Every extra layer of security on the Alfa Romeo system adds equipment time and labor to the job.
- Blade style and cutting. Traditional edge-cut blades are quick to cut. High-security laser-cut blades, with a groove milled into the side, need a specialized machine and more care, and the blanks themselves cost more. If we have to decode a lock to find the cuts, that adds labor as well.
- Travel, timing and extra repairs. Sometimes a key problem is really a lock problem: an ignition that won't turn even with the right key, or a door cylinder that has been jammed for years. Fixing those is separate work. We point them out, explain the options, and quote the whole job up front so the bill holds no surprises.
Stelvio key types explained
- Smart proximity key (push-to-start). A smart or proximity key lets a 2026 Alfa Romeo Stelvio open when you touch the door handle and start with a push of a button while the fob stays in your pocket or bag. Antennas in the doors and cabin send out a low-frequency wake-up signal; the fob answers on a higher radio frequency with an encrypted reply, and the car only allows a start once it confirms the fob is inside. When the fob battery is weak, that conversation fails, which is why most designs include a backup: hold the fob against the start button or set it in a designated pocket. The owner's manual shows where, and it's worth checking before you need it.
Why a spare key pays for itself
- When you sell or trade in the vehicle, buyers and dealers expect two keys. A missing key can come up during an appraisal or a private-sale negotiation, so having both on hand keeps the conversation about the car, not about what it will cost the next owner to replace one.
- Two drivers sharing one key is a daily negotiation. A second key lets a partner, teenager or coworker use the vehicle without handing keys back and forth in parking lots, and it means one person losing their key ring doesn't leave the whole household stuck.
- A spare stored safely at home rescues you from a locked car with the fob sitting on the seat, a key dropped somewhere along a hiking trail, or a fob that stops responding on a busy morning. Keep it indoors, never in a magnetic box under the bumper.
Tips from a mobile locksmith
- Never hide a spare key or fob on the outside of the car. Magnetic boxes in wheel wells and under bumpers are the first places a thief checks, and with a proximity fob, a hidden key can let anyone open the doors and drive away. Keep the spare at home or with someone you trust.
- Make the spare before you need it. Adding a key while one still works is quicker and less expensive than starting from nothing, and it keeps the simpler programming options available. Good moments are right after buying the car, or as soon as one of your two keys goes missing.
- If your vehicle has a proximity key, think about where it sleeps at night. A fob hanging by the front door can sit within range of relay equipment used to open and start cars from outside. A drawer deeper inside the house, a signal-blocking pouch, or the fob's own sleep mode reduces that risk considerably.
- Every so often, use the mechanical blade in the driver's door lock. Cylinders that go years without a key can seize from dust and dried grease, and you won't find out until the day the fob dies and the blade is your only way in. A small shot of dry lubricant keeps the lock ready.
Common Alfa Romeo key problems
- A fading CR2032 in a Giulia or Stelvio fob often shows up first as weak range or passive entry ignoring the door handle, then as a key-not-detected message at start-up. Replace the coin cell before assuming the fob or the car has failed.
- A weak 12-volt battery triggers a surprising number of Giulia and Stelvio electrical complaints, including fobs that seem dead and doors that won't respond. Have the car's battery tested before paying for a new key.
- Generic scan tools and many older key programmers can't read the PIN or learn keys on a Giulia or Stelvio, and the Stelvio usually needs a bypass cable. A failed attempt elsewhere often means the wrong connection was used, not that the car can't accept a new key.
- Online fobs for the Giulia and Stelvio vary widely. A fob with the wrong part number or frequency, or a used OEM fob that was never reset, will not program, so check for FCC ID KR5ALFA434 and a part number such as 6EP44LXHAA before buying.
- The emergency key in a Giulia or Stelvio fob slides out after you press in both sides and slide the cover back. It works either way up, but a bent or worn blade can bind in the lock, so have a fresh one cut instead of copying the damaged one.
- The 4C's fob has a push-button release and hinge that see heavy use. If the blade stops swinging out or the case cracks, ask about a replacement shell before assuming the electronics have failed, because the remote board and transponder may be fine.
- Stellantis tells Tonale owners to keep the key fob off the wireless charging pad and at least six inches away from it. Following that rule removes one source of odd fob behavior that is easy to blame on the key.
- Plenty of used Alfas change hands with a single key. With only one, the next loss becomes an all-keys-lost job, which on these cars is far more involved than adding a spare while a working key is still in hand.
Proof of ownership
Making car keys is regulated work in California. Locksmiths are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services under the Locksmith Act, Business and Professions Code section 6980 and following, and Julian's Locksmith holds company license LCO7891. Verification protects you more than anyone: a locksmith who will make a key for whoever asks will also make one for someone who wants your car. We record your name, the vehicle and its VIN on a work order, and we politely decline jobs where ownership can't be established. You can look up our license at search.dca.ca.gov.
Frequently asked questions
Do you come to Southern California to make car keys, or do I bring the car to you?
We come to you. Julian's Locksmith is a mobile-only service, so the van drives to wherever the car is parked in Southern California: your driveway, an apartment lot, a workplace or a shopping center. That matters most when every key is lost, because it saves you a tow. Just make sure we'll have room to work beside the driver's door and that the vehicle is accessible when we arrive.
When can you come out to Southern California for a car key?
We work every day from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., weekends included. Weekends are included. Call (951) 903-3193 and we'll give you an honest ETA to Southern California based on where we are at the time. If you're stuck outside our hours, it's usually smarter to leave the car parked and locked, get home safely, and call when we open than to pay for an overnight tow.
Why does my Stelvio crank but not start with a newly cut key?
That pattern points to the immobilizer, not the engine. The blade is cut correctly, so the ignition turns, but the car doesn't recognize the chip and blocks fuel or spark. A flashing security light usually confirms it. The key either wasn't programmed, carries the wrong chip type, or is an unprogrammed copy from a hardware store. Programming a correct key to your 2026 Alfa Romeo Stelvio resolves it.
Can you fix a broken Alfa Romeo key instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. If the shell is cracked, the buttons are worn or the blade snapped, but the circuit board and chip are healthy, we can transfer the electronics into a new housing and cut a fresh blade to your key code. Your existing programming stays intact. If the board has been damaged by water or impact, a repair won't last, and we'll recommend a new programmed key instead.
What happens to the key I lost? Can it still start my Alfa Romeo?
When we program new keys, we can usually erase lost keys from the immobilizer, which stops them from starting the engine. On some systems the car only remembers the keys present during programming, so the lost one drops off automatically. Keep in mind that a lost key's metal blade can still open the doors, so if it went missing with something that shows your address, ask about rekeying the door locks.
